Heroic Scale
Tools Required:
Scalpel or sharp-bladed hobby knife -
this is recommended over scissors for cutting
out parts
Metal ruler or straight-edge
Cutting surface - a self-healing cutting
mat is recommended, but a sheet of corru-
gated cardboard or even heavy poster board
will work as well.
Glue - white glue, glue stick or wax stick.
Double sided cellophane tape also works well.
Rubber cement can be used, but will some-
times stain the cardstock or discolor colored
inks and cause them to run.
Tweezers - a useful tool for folding small
tabs and holding small parts during con-
struction.
A Note About Using White Glue
White glue contains mostly water. Too
much glue may cause warping. Warping
may cause the parts not to fit together cor-
rectly. If you use white glue, apply a very
thin coat on the glue tabs - the thinner the
better. You can use a cotton swab or your fin-
ger to spread the glue thin. Remember to
keep a damp paper towel handy to remove

any excess glue from your fingers before as-
sembly.
While each of the buildings have been
specifically designed to attach to a base tile,
each building will free stand if desired and
the base tiles are not necessassary in order
for the pieces to be used. The glue flaps at
the bottom edge of each building can be
trimmed if desired with no effect on the fin-
ished piece.
IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE:
Many of these pieces, the buildings in
particular, have been marked with a series
of grey lines to indicate where to fold. In most
cases the grey line will appear at the edges
of the building pieces and not on the build-
ings themselves. It is strongly recommended
that all scores or fold lines be made before
the piece is cut from the page. In most
every case the grey line will appear at the
top and bottom of a line that needs to be
scored. Line up your ruler along these grey
lines so it is even and score across the body
of the section you are intending to construct.
For the majority of these pieces the areas
needed to be folded will be between walls or
across wall faces. Most of the pieces in this
set have had a texture that extends over into
the glue tab. This was done to hide any of
the white of the paper that might show on
the tab side when folding and gluing in
place.
It should also be pointed out that while
these pieces were designed to be printed on
110# cardstock (available at your local office
supply store), but a lighter cardstock will
work just as well. If your printer cannot print
on cardstock of any weight, the pieces can
be printed out on plain white paper (20 lb.
bond, uncoated) and glued to a piece of
cardstock or suitable heavy paper for con-
struction. It is recommended, however, that
the bases be glued to a heaver cardstock to
help support the buildings and add durabil-
ity to the finished models. Bases can be glued
to heavy chipboard, foamcore, illustration
board or any other type of heavy material
as desired.
DISCLAIMER
The designer has made every effort to
make sure that all parts fit together prop-
erly, but at tolerances are tight and mistakes
do happen. Pieces may fit together differ-
ently than designed depending on the
weight of cardstock being used and the par-
ticular tolerances of your printer. It is rec-
ommended that you test fit all pieces before
applying glue. Some trimming and other
adjustments may be required for final as-
sembly.
To construct the building, score and cut
out the building front and back (on Page 1)
and the building sides (on Page 2). Glue a
side wall to the left and right sides of the
building front. Both of the side walls are
exactly the same so it doesn’t matter which
one goes where. When dry, attach the back
wall to the rear of the building wall on the
left. Set this section aside to dry.
Score and cut out the roof panel (on
Page 1). Fold up the 4 side walls from the
center roof panel. Apply glue to the
unprinted side of the front side wall of the
roof and attach to the inside of the front wall
of the building. Next, attach the left wall the
same way. Follow this with the right wall.
To finish, fold over the back wall, apply glue
to the inner side wall of the roof and the tab
at the back of the right wall and set in place.
This section is finished and should be set
aside to dry.
To build the upper story, score and cut
out the roof panel and the wall panels. For
the roof, fold down the 4 side walls to the
outside and fold in the triangular tabs and
glue to the inside. Next, attach the 2 wall
panels together. When dry, fold to the inside
all the tabs along the top and bottom edges.
Apply glue to the tabs along the top edges
and set the roof in place. Make sure it’s cen-
tered before the glue dries. When the entire
section is dry, apply glue to the tabs at the
bottom edges of the building and set in place
on the roof of the main building. It can be
placed as desired. The photograph below
shows this upper room set to the back left.
To build the air vent, fold the body of the
piece into a box shape and glue the wall tab
to the inside. To construct the tops, score the
square panel in the center and score along
the long grey line at the 4 corners. Cut along
the black line at the remaining corners. Fold
all four panels down from the top panel, fold
the triangular tabs to the inside and glue in
place. When dry, attach the top by applying
glue to the tabs at the top edges of the main
body and setting in place. The tabs at the
bottom can be used to glue the vent to the
roof if desired.
This set also contains several signs for
the building. The 2 long signs (for 2 differ-
ent types of businesses) can be cut out and
glued in place over the front door as shown
in the photograph. The 2 smaller signs to
the right can be cut out and glued over the
front center window. The remaining signs
and billboard can be placed on the building
as desired.
