Course Subject Description:


The development of listening and speaking skills and strategies for effective communication in various
situations.

Course Goals:
At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
1. understand the nature and elements of oral communication in context
2. design and perform effective controlled and uncontrolled oral communication activities based on context
3. value the functions/purposes of oral communication
4. write an essay of his/her objective observation and evaluation of the various speakers watched and listened
to
5. recognize that communicative competence requires understanding of speech context, speech style, speech
act and communicative strategy
6. demonstrate effective use of communicative strategy in a variety of speech situations
7. realize the rigors of crafting one’s speech
8. proficiently deliver various speeches using the principles of effective speech delivery

Course Requirements:
1. Attendance and Participation in Class Discussion. Everyone is expected to be in class always and participates
actively in the class discussion. An excuse letter has to be presented if one has one or two absences. If one has
incurred three or more absences already, he/she must bring with him/her one of his/her parents/guardians for
conference. It is also essential to prepare for each class meeting by reading the topics ahead of time.

2. Daily Routine. This is for a smooth conduct of the class and this will be facilitated by one group everyday. The
group must be able to do the following:
Before the Class Starts
Opening Prayer – This must be a spontaneous/memorized, personal and short prayer.
Recap – This is a short narration of what transpired the previous meeting. This must be presented in this
manner: 3 things that happened the previous meeting, 2 things that you have learned, 1 value that you
have cherished
Twit Me – This is a quote presentation and analysis. The quote to be presented has to be properly
researched and documented. A short explanation has to be given too.
Tongue Twister – This will serve as an oral exercise for everyone. This has to be written on a manila
paper/cartolina and posted on the board for everyone to see.
Prior to Dismissal
Hashtag – This is a one-liner reflection/learning about the day’s lesson
Closing Prayer – A spontaneous/memorized, personal and short prayer would be best to end the meeting.

If done completely without delay, the group can get 10 points for it.

Criteria for Judging Points


Readiness and Completeness 3 points
Manifestation of Group Collaboration and Planning 3 points
Communication Skills, Content and Analysis 4 points
Total 10 points

3. Reflective Essays. Integrating ICT, these have to be type-written or computerized on a short bond paper. It must
have three parts: Content (summary of the lesson/topic), Critique (analysis of the lesson/topic), and Context
(reflection/realization of the lesson’s importance to you). Font: Cambria, Size: 12, Spacing: 1.5
4. Membership of the class Facebook group. The online management system will be used for files storage,
discussion and information.
5. Deadlines and Late Submission of Requirements. For every course requirement, a set deadline is given. The
deadline must be strictly followed. Five points will be taken from the score for every single day that the
requirement is delayed.
6. Portfolio. As a compilation of all activities for the entire semester, a portfolio must be kept and will be passed by
the end of the term.

 Performance Tasks – 50%
 Quarterly Assessment – 25%
