Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on designs
and methods studies carried out up to October 2003.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is believed to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary
service bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a
reference to an V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for general
information and no reference is made to an V.S.T.

Each section of this manual contains specific safety information and warnings which
must be reviewed before performing any procedure. If a printed copy of a procedure is
made, be sure to also make a printed copy of the safety information and warnings that
relate to that procedure. The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings
are used in this Service Documentation:

Note: Indicates a situation, handling or circumstance which should be observed.

Caution: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in
minor or moderate injury or damage to property.
Warning: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result
in death, serious injury or major damage to property.

Danger: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in
death or serious injury.

Group 87 Climate Control, Fault Codes Troubleshooting

MID 146 PID 171 Temperature Sensor, Ambient Temperature

Error code

FMI 3
Abnormally high voltage or short-circuit to higher voltage.
Conditions for error code:

• If the control unit detects a voltage higher than 4.9V

the control unit interprets this as an error and a fault
code is stored.
T3006581
Possible cause:

• Signal cable short-circuited to higher voltage

• Ground lead short-circuited to higher voltage

• Faulty sensor

Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored

• Yellow lamp requested

• The control unit requests the ambient air temperature

from the instrument cluster

Noticeable external symptoms:

• Yellow lamp lights up

T8009498 FMI 4
Component: A03 Instrument Cluster A34 Climate Abnormally low voltage or short-circuit to lower voltage
Control Unit, B22 Sensor, Outdoor temperature
Conditions for error code:
General information • If the control unit detects a voltage lower than 0.55V
The sensor measures the ambient air temperature outside the control unit interprets this as an error and a fault
the cab. The sensor is located near the front bumper. code is stored.
The sensor is connected directly to the Instrument Cluster Possible cause:
(A03) which then transmits the ambient temperature
data to the Climate Control Unit (A34) via the SAE • Signal cable short-circuited to ground
J-1587/J-1708 datalink.
• Faulty sensor
Note: This fault code only applies to vehicles which
have an ambient temperature sensor. See Fault codes,
Reaction from the control unit:
Instrument Cluster group 381 for further troubleshooting.
• Fault code is stored

• Yellow lamp requested

• The control unit requests the ambient air temperature

from the instrument cluster
Noticeable external symptoms:

• Yellow lamp lights up

• Considerably reduced temperature control
