THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study


Nowadays, there’s a lot of students who are always late in class

not only lose valuable instruction for themselves, they also disturb

class and disrupt other student’s concentration. This tardiness causes

the students to feel disconnected with school. When students are tardy,

they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Sometimes other

students can also influence their co-students for they will also feel

that it’s okay to be tardy. Teachers also influenced students to be tardy

for some teachers show and make the students feel that being late is

normal to them.

These alarming circumstances among the students urge the

researchers to conduct a study to help minimize the tardiness of the

students and help discipline the student’s actions.

This research will not just help the students but also to the

teachers. Teachers may be able to realize that they have a certain

influence to the tardiness of the students.

The Problem

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the causes, effects and prevention to

be taken to avoid tardiness in student’s daily living.

Specifically, the researchers aims to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the different causes of tardiness?

2. What are the different effects of tardiness?

3. What are the ways that students can do to prevent tardiness?

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students of Bontoc National High School. The result of this study

is beneficial to the students of Bontoc National High School because

most of students are experiencing tardiness for their daily lives. This

study also aims to prepare and discipline themselves for their future

to let them know the importance of being on time.

Teachers of Bontoc National High School. Furthermore, this study

is also of great benefit to the teachers because as the researchers

observe nowadays most students cannot attend their first and second

subject that really stressed them out. This study can let the teachers

feel uncomfortable because they were also doing this practice and will

change their actions.

Readers. This study is also beneficial to the readers for this

study can raise awareness and can give them additonal knowledge about

the effects of tardiness to their lives and make them understand more

about the value of punctuality.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to spread awareness to the undying problem of the

Filipinos, especially to the students today who’s always been practicing

tardiness. It aims to find the best action and solution in order to

prevent or mend the practice of tardiness in our community.

The researcher will conduct their study at Bontoc National High

School located at San Ramon, Bontoc, Southern Leyte.

This study will focus on the Grade 11 Senior High School students

and Grade 10 junior high school students batch 2018-2019 who are

practicing tardiness. The researchers will gather 20 students from Grade

11 and 10 students in Grade 10 students. The respondents will be 30. The

data gathering instrument to be used is a survey questionnaire and a one

on one interview which will be the easy way to gather views and opinions

of the respondents.

This study will be conducted on the first week of March 2019 inside

the campus of Bontoc National High School. This study aims to identify

and analyze the causes and reasons on why students is practicing

tardiness and how it affects their performances in school.

Definition of Terms

Tardiness – a student’s state of being late or being tardy

Self-control – controlling of one’s habit and behavior

Students – refers to the individual enrolled at Bontoc National

High School

School Performance – performance of a student either curricular or

academic

Junior High School students- students who are in Grade 7 until

Grade 10

Senior High School students- students enrolled in Grade 11 until

Grade 12

Review of Related Literature

This chapter will discuss other relevant literature regarding the

topic. This part of the study includes the ideas, generalizations,

methodologies, and other from related significant works on the importance

of being knowledgeable about the impacts of tardiness among the students.

One of the most recurring and the most “frustrating problem” that the

schools are having with their students nowadays is tardiness (Sprick and

Daniels, 2007).

One factor that dictates the quality of performance of a students

is his/her punctuality that is, getting to school on time or being tardy.

As sited by Nakpodia and Dafiaghor (2011), “lateness” can be defined as

the situation where an individual arrives after the proper, scheduled

or usual time (Oxford Advance Learner’s Dictionary, 1995). Lauby (2009)

put it as a term used to describe “people not showing up on time”. Breeze

et at. (2010) contributed by saying that, lateness is synonymous with

“tardiness”, which implies being slow to act or slow to respond, thus

not meeting up with proper or usual timing. Lastly, Weade (2004) defined

tardiness as “being late for any measurable length of time past the

stated or scheduled start time for work or school.” In most schools, a

student is considered when he/she is not present when the school bell

or wwhen the first teacher starts to get instructional materials for the

first subject in the morning class.

Research Methodology

This study will use qualitative method of research for it will just

depend on the uttered words and sentences of the students on why they

arrive late. This analysis will focus on the cause, effect and prevention

of tardiness based on Santillano’s (2010) Late Again! Why Some People

are Always Tardy.

Research Environment

The researcher will conduct the study in Bontoc National High

School located in San Ramon, Bontoc, Southern Leyte beside the SLSU-

Bontoc Campus. The school is located at the Bontoc proper town where

most of the students study and a good place to conduct a research to get

reliable information.

Research Subject

The respondents are the students of Bontoc National High School.

Specifically, the students who are practicing tardiness.

Research Data

The researchers will gather 20 students for giving the survey

questioners and 10 students for one on one interview who are practicing

tardiness. The opinions will then be recorded and transcribe.

Research Instrument

The researcher will use the survey questionnaire and one on one

interview for it easily utilized to collect, analyze and interpret the

views of a group of people from a target population.

Research Tools

The researcher used Samsung galaxy J2 prime for clear voice

recorder and Oppo A37f for the clarity of the recorded interview.

Research procedures

Gathering of Data. The researchers will personally ask for the

permission of the respondents if they allow to interview and questioning.

The researchers will interview the respondents and give them the survey

question and will have the one on one interview. The recorded interviews

and questionnaires will then be transcribe for the analysis of the data.

Treatment of Data. To answer the sub-problem, the researchers will

use semi-structured questionnaires and one on one interview so that it

would be easy for the interviewee to answer and understand. Then the

gathered data will be transcribed and analyzed. Then rewritten to a

simpler and concise text.
