Classroom Teaching Methods: A Reflection

The article was entitled Methods of
Teaching in the Classroom written by Ebert et
al on November 2016. They have presented
some instructional techniques and
categorized them as teacher-focused,
dialogue-oriented and student-focused.
Teacher-focused techniques are:
•Direct Instruction: Teacher explains or
demonstrates
•Drill and Practice: Repetition to hone a skill
or memorize information
•Lecture: Teacher provides information to
students in a one-way verbal presentation
Dialogue-oriented techniques are:
•Question and Answer: Requires reflection as
information is exchanged in response to a
question
•Discussion: An exchange of opinions and
perspectives
Student-focused techniques are:
•Mental Modeling: Assists students in
managing their own learning by modeling a
problem-solving technique
•Discovery Learning: Uses students’ personal
experiences as the foundation for building
concepts
•Inquiry: Allows students to generate the
questions that they will then investigate and
answer

(What is going on in the field/in your class)
Every teacher has his/her own array of favorite
methods or techniques to be employed in ushering
effective and efficient classroom instruction. There is
no right or wrong method or technique, but each one
affects how the classroom is being managed.
Personally, I love how the authors categorized the
techniques they have written in this article. In my
teaching, I guess I have applied those techniques
(teacher-focused, dialogue-oriented and student-
focused.
In the teacher-focused techniques, I do make
beneficial decisions and perform manifold activities
that I found effective and efficient in my class.
Moreover, I do continue develop appropriate and
suitable instructional materials that would definitely
enhance pupils’ learning. I use drill and practice
oftentimes in a form of games, contests and race
methods. In the discussion, I see to it that
everything is emphasized and covered so that
nothing would be vague to the learners.
In the dialogue-oriented techniques, do create a
very positive classroom atmosphere that would make
my pupils very responsive to my questions and
activities.
In the student-focused techniques, I do encourage
ample participation from the pupils which could
stimulate their listening and thinking skills because
I firmly believe on constructivism. Moreover, I do
show a set of positive actions that could induce
discovery, exploration and active participation and
cooperation among the learners.

TOWARD
(What do you plan to do in the future)
For me, teaching is a very challenging and a
heroic mission which require competence,
compassion, creativeness and commitment to serve
the children and the community in general.
Having learned the techniques presented by the
author, I have to continue showing my commitment
and dedication in enriching pupils’ skills and
abilities. I need to continue being the shining
example of initiative and enthusiasm to my fellow
mathematics teachers. Moreover, I need to continue
employing proactive teaching techniques that would
create beneficial interactions and positive responses
from the pupils in order to promote optimum
learning.
In like manner, I have to show my unwavering
commitment and my supreme desire of letting the
pupils learn from my lessons. On that note, I shall
continue nourishing and enhancing my competence
in sharing my knowledge, skills and capabilities in
order to create beautiful and meaningful scenarios
inside the classroom. I have to continue
implementing commendable activities that could
positively enrich the attitudes of the learners.
Finally, I need to show my personal conviction
that my passion for teaching will always be burning.
I shall continue manifesting the zeal in nurturing
the pupils’ skills, abilities and attitudes. Someday I
want to be that someone who will be considered as
the distinct ray of light that illumines the mind,
touches the heart and lifts the spirit of the learners.
