The Multiplication Challenge:

Chapter 12
HOMEGROWN OR HIRED?
BOOK REVIEW:
The author gave powerful insights about having homegrown
leaders in a church or in an organization rather than hiring pre-made
leaders. It is not easy to identify potential leaders whom you will train and
develop, but eventually, God will open your eyes to see them how He
sees them and to look at who they could be rather than who they are
currently.

In this chapter, the author compared homegrown leaders to sons,

they can’t be bought – they need to be birthed. He emphasized that it
might take years and years of developing them as leaders, but for sure, it
will be worth it. You will be able to witness how they’ve grown from an
ordinary or average person into a great leader. They would be people
who will never sell their loyalty to you. Because they have been with you
for many years, they will value the relationship you built with them than
any other things.

At the latter part of this chapter, the author shared ways on how to
develop homegrown leaders:
 Birth them
 Train them (now)
 Lead them

Discipleship must be relational and leadership must be deeply

rooted in relationship. We can read different leaders in the Bible who
valued relationship than anything else. It’s because they knew that that’s
how the Lord Jesus Christ dealt with people. He treated them as his own
family. Likewise, we also have to be relational in dealing with people and
developing their potential, as a result, homegrown leaders, with deep
roots, will rise.

Chapter 13
PLATFORMS OR PRISONS?

BOOK REVIEW:
“What are you building?” – this is the last sentence of the last
chapter of this book. This statement made me realize that the position of
today’s leaders are crucial, because the power and the influence they
have (whether good or bad) may affect the next generation.
When leaders do their part to prepare for the success of their
successors, they’re building platforms that the next generation leaders
can use as they maximize their leadership position to advance the
kingdom of God. On the other hand, if leaders would only think of their
present status and the present condition of the organization, and neglect
their responsibilities to the next generation leaders, they are the ones
building the prison for their descendants.
Here, the life of Absalom was used as an example of a leader who
built a monument for himself - something that a true leader should not do.
From there, the author shared three reasons why leaders build monuments
to honor themselves:
 Leaders who refuse to honor their fathers build monuments for
themselves.
 Leaders who refuse to forgive their brothers build monuments
for themselves.
 Leaders who refuse to trust their sons build monuments for
themselves.
It is natural that people honor leaders, but at the same time, it might
be dangerous because he might take that recognition to himself and
later on become prideful and arrogant. That’s why, whenever leaders
receive compliments and praises from people, it is necessary for them to
remind themselves once in a while that they are only humans and only
God should receive the highest honor.
After reading the last chapter, I came to realize that my decisions
now (as a leader) would surely affect the next-generation leaders
whether I like it or not. It made me reflect and assess how I live my life
now. In this book, I’ve learned a lot about life as a leader and as a
follower of Christ. It also opened my eyes about the current situation of
the church and how I could help (in my own little ways) to address the
leadership shortage.
