III. PROCEDURE
TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY
INTRODUCTION:
-Good morning/afternoon Class!!! -Good morning sir!!!
-Checking of attendance.

This morning we are going to talk about

momentum. We are going to define
momentum, describe the relationship of
momentum, mass and velocity, and later on we
well have a problem solving.
But don’t you worry class we well solve it all
together.

-Okay class! Are you ready? -Yes sir!

Seat properly and let’s get started.

I have here a toy car and truck, if both of the car

and truck have same speed, which of the two
can be stopped first? -The car sir.
Of course all you say, it is hard to stop a truck
relative to the car.

Well, what is the reason making the car stopped -Because, car is not so heavy compared to
easier? the truck.

That’s right! Very good!

They have same speed but different masses.
Can a mass affect the stopping time and -Yes.
distance?
Absolutely yes! Because it is hard to stop
heavier objects.

We are talking so far is momentum.

 is the product of the mass and velocity

of an object. Like velocity, momentum
is a vector quantity, possessing a
direction as well as a magnitude:

Let me formulized what we said.

MOMENTUM=MASS x VELOCITY
In physics we used p for momentum, m for
mass and v for velocity.
Then the equation become
p=m.v
 The amount of momentum which an
object has is dependent upon two
variables:
 how much matter is moving?
 how fast the matter is moving?
*if an object is at rest, it has no momentum.

Let’s have a sample problem.

1. Determine the momentum of ...
a.) A 60 kg halfback moving eastward at 9 a. GIVEN: P=?
m/s. m=60 kg
b.) A 1234 kg car moving northward at 35 v=9 m/s
m/s. SOLUTION:
P =mv
=(60 kg)(9m/s)
P = 540 kg.m/s, east

b. GIVEN: P =?
m = 1234 kg
v = 35 m/s
SOLUTION:
P =mv
= (1234kg)(35m/s)
Impulse is defined as the product force acting P = 43,190 kg*m/s, north
on an object and the time during which the
force acts. The symbol for impulse is I. So, by
definition:
I=Ft
Example: A 50 N force is applied to a 100 kg GIVEN:
boulder for 3 s. F=50N
t=3s
IV. SUMMARY: I=?
1. Define momentum. SOLUTION:
2. State the relationship of I=Ft
momentum, mass and velocity. =50N(3s)
=150N.s
V. EVALUATION:
Compute for momentum and Impulse
1. A child having mass 25kg and
velocity 2m/s moves to the west.
2. A compact car, mass 725kg is
moving at 1.00x102 km/s toward
the east.

VI. ASSIGNMENT:
