Different Cultures Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: It’s a Small World: Different Cultures


Grade: Second Grade Social Studies
Instructor: Ms. Jasmine Vazquez

1. Objectives: SWBAT (SS 2.1) explore nationality and diversity.


i. SWBAT (SS 2.14) Identify and compare culture practices
and traditions in the U.S
2. Materials and Preparations:
a. Projector/screen to show lyric video of It’s a Small World
b. Globe or map of the seven continents
c. Cultural Coloring pages
d. Markers, crayons color pencils.
3. Instructions:
a. Introductions:
i. Start the class with vocabulary on Culture, Compare and
contrast, and continent.
ii. State that today they will learn about different cultures and
that they will compare a culture with the U.S.
b. Teacher Instruction:
i. Start the class with It’s a Small World song. Have students
listen to the song then have students give their opinion of
the song.
ii. After the class has heard the song have students volunteer
or choose students to share where they are from and a
tradition they have. Ex. A student may be from Hawaii and
the way they celebrate birthday or special occasions will be
with a Luau the student will then explain what consist of a
Luau.
iii. Explain to the children that they will choose a coloring page
that is different from their culture. The students will read
the small information on the coloring page; they will color
the page, and present the culture they chose to the class.
iv. During the presentation the students will state the content,
country, and capital. They will also state what they learned
from the page and will state if the U.S has something similar
to what the page is stating, or they can state the difference
between the U.S and the country they got.
c. Student Activity:
i. Students will be coloring the page that is different from the
country they live in or are from.
ii. Students will look in their textbook or map that is displayed
in the classroom to figure out the continent of their
country.
iii. Student will present in front of the class their country and
explain to the class some similarities or differences
between the country they got and the U.S.
d. Closure
i. Evaluation: Students’ will be evaluated in their
presentation if they were successful in reading a map to
figure out the continent of their country. Student will also
be evaluated on the comparison between their culture and
the U.S.
ii. Show the song one more time with the lyrics, have a
discussion of what the song means to the now.
iii. Remind students that we all come from all over and have
different traditions and cultures but we are all still people,
human, who have feelings so we have to be nice to
everyone.
