The King of Lanka and a Bramhin Scholar Lankesh Ravana – An astrological overview

Vedic literature is eternal and vast. It is just like an Ocean. It is a never ending flow. Vedic literature is
like celestial tree (Kalpa Vriksha) and it’s fruits are Upanishad, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Smrities,
Puranas and many more. Among the gems of Vedic literature, “Ramayana” is a pearl. It has it’s own
singnificance. Today I am going to analyse a prime character of “Ramayana” astrologically. He is none
other than the King of Lanka and a wise bramhin Ravana. But before analysing his horoscope, let me
discuss his family background and character. We all know that Ravana was a bramhin by birth. His father
was sage Vaisrabha who was the grandson of Lord Bramha. Sage Pulastya was manas putra of Lord
Bramha and he was the father of sage Vaisrabha whose son was Ravan. Sage Vaisrabha married Kaikasi,
the daughter of demon king Sumali. So, Ravan was the son of sage Vaisrabha and Kaikasi. So Ravan was
bramhin by birth. But instead of opting for bramhin duties, Ravan became the leader of demons and the
king of Lanka. He committed several sinful acts by which his soul gets terribly tainted.

First of all I am greatly thankful to legendary astrologer Pandit Gopesh Kumar Ojha and Pandit Ashutosh
Ojha. Because I have collected King Ravana’s Horoscope from their book – “Phaladeepika (Bhavartha
Bodhini)”. The authors of this book has clearly mentioned there in preface (page no- xix) that a Sadhu of
Haridwar had shared them the horoscope of king Ravana. On basis of that I am going to analyse bramhin
king Ravana’s birth chart on basis of my scanty knowledge in this divine field astrology.

King Ravana’s Horoscope

His ascendant is Aries or Mesha and his Moon sign or Rashi is Cancer (Karka). Ascendant is very strong
here. Ascendant lord Mars is in 10th house and here it gets digbali (Directional strength) also. 10th and
11th Lord Saturn is Exalted and also making impact on the Ascendant. 5th lord Sun is exalted and
occupied his ascendant. The above mentioned planetary configuration makes him healthy, strong and
well built body. As per Ramayana, Maharshi Valmiki gives the same description. King Ravan had a
mascular body. He was strong and handsome man. Here we can see same picture from his horoscope.
Now, we will judge his Chandra lagan (Moon sign) because Moon-sign is also important as the
Ascendant. Our venerable Sages have mentioned it in their various classics in Astrology. Ravana’s Moon
sign is Cancer, ruled by Moon itself. Rashi lord Moon is placed in own sign along with Jupiter who is the
6th and 9th lord on the basis of Moon ascendant. Jupiter is exalted there and Moon is in it’s own sign. Not
only that Exalted Mars (5th and 10th lord from rashi) making impact on the Moon ascendant
simultaneously. Saturn is exalted (7th and 8th lord from rashi) is also making impact on his Moon
ascenadant or Chandra lagna. All these planetary placements make his Chandra lagna or Rashi very
strong. Astrologically, it is a rule that when lagna and lagna lord is a benefic and strong, native is
destined to enjoy a healthy body, handsome personality, free from all diseases etc. We all know that in
Ramayana, Maharshi Valmiki has mentioned that King of lanka and wise bramhin Ravana was very
handsome, well built mascular body having a powerful personality. Ravan’s horoscope indicates same
thing as stated by maharishi Valmiki in Ramayana.

Now I am going to discuss Ravana’s character, personality, his nature, his deeds, career etc on the basis
of his natal chart. Maharishi Valmiki states in Ramayana that Ravana was born in a bramhin family. His
father was sage Vaisrabha (grandson of Lord Bramha) and mother was Kaikasi., daughter of demon king
Sumali. As a student of Astrology, we can understand this from Ravana’s horoscope. In this case, we
should analyse his lagna, lagna lord, 4th house and 4th lord. Because lagna and lagna lord represent
native himself, his caste and his everything and 4th house and 4th lord indicates family. So, to analyse
Ravana’s caste, these above mentioned houses and their lords must be taken into the account properly.

His ascendant lord Mars is in 10th house and exalted and digbali. Mars is aspected by Jupiter and moon.
Here jupiter is exalted and moon is in own house. We all know Jupiter represents wise bramhin. Now we
should analyse his 4th house and 4th lord. Because 4th house and 4th lord represent the family. Here we
can see 9th lord and 12th lord Jupiter is occupied in 4th house along with 4th lord moon. Jupiter here is
exalted and moon is very powerful. Jupiter is bramhin by caste. So, we can come to the conclusion as
Jupiter is in 4th house which represents his family then native should be born in bramhin family. We all
know Ravana was bramhin by birth. Let us examine his chandra lagna. His chandra lagna is Cancer. Here
moon itself is moon sign lord and occupied in cancer. 6th and 4th lord jupiter is exalted and occupied in
cancer (Moon sign). Here again it clearly indicates his bramhin impact. 4th house from chandra lagna is
libra. Saturn is occupied in 4th and exalted (7th and 8th lord as per ascendant). Venus is the significator
here and Venus (4th lord as per moon ascendant) is exalted and occupied in 9th house in pisces. Here
jupiter is the significator. Jupiter is aspecting venus. So all these above mentioned combinations indicate
Ravana was bramhin by birth.

Now I am going to analyse king Ravana’s personality.Maharishi Valmiki states in Ramayana that Ravana
was highly intelligent. He was well versed in Vedas, mantras, shastras, Astrology, poetry as well as
music. Ravana was real bramhin and was expert in Shad darshan. If I analyse his horoscope same picture
will be shown as stated by Maharishi Valmiki in “Ramayana”. We all know 4th house and 4th lord denotes
education, 5th house and 5th lord denotes intelligency and 9th house, 9th lord denotes higher education.
In Ravana’s horoscope 4th house is very powerful due to the good strength of 4th lord moon and 6th as
well as 9th lord jupiter. Jupiter is exalted here and moon is in own house. Lagna lord and 8th lord Mars is
aspecting 4th house. Mars is exalted. From his chandra lagna kundali 4th house is Libra. Here 7th and 8th
lord Saturn occupied the 4th house and Saturn is exalted there. 4th lord venus is in 9th house and exalted.
5th and 10th lord Mars is in 7th house and exalted there. These above mentioned planetary combinations
made him intelligent and well versed in Vedic Shastras. Lankesh Ravana was a great Astrologer. Because
Jupiter is here exalted and occupied in 4th house along with 4th lord Moon. We all know that Jupiter is
the significator of Vedic knowledge. Lagnesh Mars is also lord of the 8th house. We all know 8th house
and 8th lord denotes occult knowledge. Here Mars being exalted occupied the 10th house aspecting 4th
house, 4th lord moon and 9th and 12th lord Jupiter. It indicates native should be expert in Vedic
literature and we all know Ravana was a great vedic scholar. Ravana was great singer and musician also.
In Ravana’s horoscope Mercury is in 2nd house. 2nd house denotes speech. 2nd house is benefic also. 2nd
lord venus exalted and in 12th house in jupiter’s varga. So this planetary combibnations made him expert
in singing and music. King Ravana was expert in Mantra Shastra also. His ketu is in 5th house. We know
that ketu is a mystic planet and occult knowledge is also signified by ketu. So, due to the placement of
Ketu in 5th house in Ravana’s horoscope, Ravana was expert in mantra shastra also. Who can forget the
‘SHIVA TANDAV STOTRA’- was composed by none other than Lankesh Ravana, the king of Lanka. Due to
the above planetary combination Ravana was able to do so.

We all know Ravana was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Ravana was blessed by Lord Shiva. We can get
the same picture from his horoscope also. In his horoscope, 5th lord sun is exalted and occupied in his
ascendant. We all know 5th house and 5th lord denotes dedication, bhakti, purva punya etc. 9th lord
Jupiter is also exalted and occupied in 4th house along with 4th lord moon and aspected by lagna lord
and 8th lord Mars who is also exalted. We all know 9th house signifies religion, guru, diksha, sadhana etc.
Sun signifies Lord Shiva and Jupiter signifies Samba Sadashiva (Shiva along with Shakti). So above
mentioned planetary combination made him great devotee of Lord Shiva.

Ravana was a great king and a warrior. We all know mars and sun these two planets are kshatriyas by
caste. In Ravana’s chart Lagnesh is mars and mars is exalted here and is occupied in 10th house of name
and fame. Royal planet sun is also exalted and occupied in the ascendant. These above mentioned
planetary combination made him great warrior and king of Lanka. We all know Ravana fought so many
wars and won Triloka (swarga, martya and patal).

Ravana had healthy relationship with his parents. From 9th house and 9th lord we consider his father. In
his horoscope 9th lord Jupiter is in 4th house along with 4th lord Moon. Jupiter is exalted here and moon is
in own house in 4th. Pitri karaka or natural significator of father is Sun, is in lagna and Sun is exalted. So,
it indicates Ravana’s father was reputed, honorable, knowledgeable person and native has good
relationship with his father. In reality we know Sage Vaisrabha, father of Ravana, was a pious bramhin
and expert in Vedas and was a knowledgeable sage on that contemporary period. Exalted Saturn is
making impact on 9th house, 9th lord Jupiter as well as natural significator of father Sun. For that reason
some altercation was appeared between Ravana and his father sage Vaisrabha. We know it from the
“Ramayana”.

Ravana had very healthy relationship with his mother Kaikashi, the daughter of demon King Sumali. We
can easily understand this from his horoscope. Ravana’s 4th lord Moon in 4th house along with 9th and
12th lord Jupiter. So 4th house is very beneficial and 4th lord moon and 9th and 12th lord also. It indicates
good relationship with the mother. His natal chart is indicating the same thing. Ravana had two brothers
and one sister. Bibhisana and Kumbhakarna were his brothers and Suprpanakha was his sister. They
were very loyal and faithful to their elder brother King Ravana. Let me analyse this astrologically. 3rd
house and 3rd lord denotes younger brother and sister. 3rd house is not afflicted. 3rd lord mercury is in 2nd
house and in benefic condition. 3rd lord’s significator venus is exalted. Mars is also the significator
brother and sister. Here Mars is exalted. 3rd house from mars is pisces. There exalted venus is situated
and 3rd lord from Mars is Jupiter. Jupiter is also exalted. All these planetary combinations are indicating
that Ravana had faithful brothers and sister. As Mars is Bhratru Karaka, Mars is making impact on Sun,
Jupiter and Moon. So we can understand from this his numbers of brothers and sister. As mars is
connected to male planet Sun and Jupiter, Ravana had two brothers who were Kumbhakarna and
Bibhisana. As Mars is also connected to female planet Moon, so Ravana had one sister named
Surpanakha.

In Ramayana, it is stated that Ravana had a love marriage. (Gandharba vivah) and he had very faithful
and beautiful wife. We all know Mandadori was Ravana’s prime wife (patraani) and she was very
beautiful, loyal and faithful to king Ravana. Let me analyse this astrologically. From 5th house and 5th lord
we find love and romance. Here 5th lord Sun is in lagna and exalted and making impact on 7th house of
marriage. 10th lord and 11th lord is Saturn and Saturn is exalted and occupied in 7th house. Venus is the
significator for wife, is exalted and Jupiter’s varga. Lagna lord mars is aspecting exalted Jupiter. So it
indicates love marriage (Gandharba Vivah) and wife would be beautiful and faithful. As venus is in 12th
house in dual sign and aspected by Rahu, it indicates many wives. From Ramayana we all knew Ravana
had many wives.

Ravana had many sons and they were faithful to their father king Ravana. They were very brave but
among them Indrajit-Meghnad was prime. Let me analyse it astrologically. From 5th house we judge son
and Jupiter is the natural Putrakaraka. Here 5th lord sun is exalted and occupied in ascendant, natural
putrakaraka Jupiter is exalted and 5th lord Jupiter is mars which all indicate the same thing as we know
from Ramayana. All this combinations are indicating that Ravana had faithful and brave sons.

King Ravana had enormous properties. He had ‘Pushpak Vimana’ , his palace was covered with gold and
gems. It is stated by Maharishi Valmiki in “Ramayana”. Let me analyse it astrologically. From 4 th house
and 4th lord we judge property. Here 4th house is benefic and 4th lord moon is also benefic. Jupiter is also
benefic here and 4th house from Jupiter is also benefic. More than it, Exalted Saturn is posited there. 4th
lord from Jupiter is venus who is also exalted. This above combinations are indicating that king Ravana
was very rich and had enormous property. In Ravana’s horoscope, there are some auspicious Raja yogas.
Here I am going to mention those in below:
1> Hamsa Yoga- Jupiter should be occupied in Kendra, which should be his own sign or house of
exaltation. Ravana’s Jupiter is in 4th house and exalted also.
Results of this yoga- Native will be intelligent and handsome. Ravana was handsome and intelligent. We
all have known it from the “Ramayana”.
2> Sasa Yoga- Saturn should be occupied in Kendra, which should be his own sign or house of
exaltation. In Ravana’s chart Saturn is in 7th house in Libra and exalted also.
Results of this yoga- The native will command good servants. His character will be questionable. He will
be a head of village or a town or even be a king, will love others riches and will be wicked in-disposition.
All the above mentioned results are already matched with Ravana’s character.
3> Ruchaka Yoga- Mars should be exalted in a Kendra which should be his own sign or exaltation
sign.
Results of this yoga- Native will have strong physic, famous and well versed in ancient subject, king or
equal to king, conforming to the traditions and customs. He will be long lived and leader of an army. All
the above mentioned results are matched with Ravana’s character.
 4> Gajakeshari Yoga- If Jupiter is in a kendra from the moon or ascendant or conjuncts moon,
then the combination goes under the name of Gajakeshari Yoga.
Results of this yoga- Many relations, generous, builder of villages, town or magistrate them, will have
long lasting reputation even after death. All the above mentioned results are matched with Ravana’s
character.

Why Ravana was killed by Shri Ram ?

Though Ravana was endowed with many extra ordinary qualities, inspite of these Ravana opted for bad
karmas. Ravana kidnapped Sita Mata, gave trouble others and he did all the work against of dharma.

As per karma theory, we all know “Karmana Gahan Gati”- it means our karma or deeds decide our fate.
King Ravana’s karma brought painful ending to him.
