1.) Abstract of the proposal (maximum of 250 words)

Stray animals are the one that have strayed especially domestic animals wandering

about. This research will contain useful data regarding health risk that can threaten the

students inside the campus. The researchers will conduct this research to know if those

animals carry biological hazards that can lead people to disease. This research contains

knowledge and awareness about stray animals and how to lessen them. Evidences

shall be presented to prove that stray animals can and will pose as a biological threat.

This evidences shall be analyzed without bias towards the outcomes. The main

objective is to know why this research will be conducted : to know the primary reason

why these animals are increasing in numbers. Because if people are aware then they

can also help to lessen or remove these stray animals. This research will be conducted

at the local insitittute and the respondents will be the local populace. The purpose of the

interview is to evaluate factors that are associated with stray animals. These animals

affect the daily routines of the students due to their wild and unpredictable actions

towards the students. Such factors can lead to the disruption of the student’s activities.

2.) Background

a.) Rationale of the Research

The researchers conducted this study considering that these stray animals carry

virus that can lead students to disease. Stray animals are one of the problems as to why

these students are alarmed about their health and safety. The researchers conduct this

so that they can think of a way to get rid of these things that affect the health of the

students who are in the campus and to know why these stray animals are increasing in

number.

However, the researchers also think of a way to give them proper treatment and

attention. There are stray animals roaming around the campus and the researchers are

aware about the health risk that it can bring to the students. For example, having rabies,

according to DOH (Department of Health) that rabies remains one of the country's top

killer disease. As a fact, Philippines is fourth in the highest rabies cases after India, Sri

Lanka and Thailand. According to statistics of the country’s 280,000 victims annually,

more than 200 people died because of rabies.

b.) Purpose of the Research

The main purpose of the researchers is to solve the students’ health at risk because

of the stray animals around the campus. The researchers are very aware of the viruses

that brought by the stray animals around the campus but only few know the

differentdiseases that it will cause. The researchers want to raise awareness on what

are the diseases and harmful effects of this stray animals that will help to reduce the

health at risk. The researchers want to totally remove those stray animals so that the

students can freely walk around the campus without feeling unsafe for they know what

to do when they encounter animals.

Furthermore it seeks to answer the following questions:

1.) How often do students encounter stray animals?

2.) Where do most of the students encounter/come across those stray

animals?

3.) What are the possible threats caused by these animals in the terms of :

c.) Theoretical Framework

There are stray animals roaming around our campus and we’re aware about the

health risk that it can bring us. For example, having rabies, according to DOH

(Department of Health) that rabies remains one of the country's top killer disease,Min

fact, the Philippines is fourth in the highest rabies cases after India, Sri Lanka and

Thailand. of the country’s 280,000 victims annually, more than 200 people died because

of rabies. Rabies is caused by a virus which medical experts describes as

"neurotrophic" because of its attraction to nerve tissues. Once the virus has found its

way into the cell tissue of a host, it turns into a highly prolific producer. The virus is

transmitted to man by the bite if a rabid animal, but doctor aware that it can also be

transmitted with the saliva of a carrier host.

According to Minnesota Department of Health, an animal transmitted disease or

zoonosis (zoonotic disease or zoonoses-plural) is an infectious disease that is

transmitted between species from animals to humans (or from humans to animals). An

example of zoonotic disease is Rabies. Rabies is a disease that affects the nervous

system of mammals. It is caused by virus and is typically spread by an infected animal

biting another animal or person. Rabies is a fatal disease; it cannot be treated once

symptoms appear. Luckily, rabies can be effectively prevented by vaccination. The

animals that can be a carrier of rabies was skunks, bats, dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and

other domestic animals usually become infected after being bitten by a rabid skunk.

People are generally exposed to rabies by bats, dogs, cats or livestock.

According to Oski’s Essential Pediatrics, when the wound occurs, most wounds are

colonized by mixed aerobic and anaerobic organism of obtained from the skin of the

victims and the oral cavity of the biter.

An average of infected wound yields 3-5 organism on culture with the highest

estimate of organism emanating from human bites. The most common are

staphylococcus species, streptococcus species and corynebacterium species.

Pasteurellamultocida is the most aerobic pathogen in cat bites infection is also found

commonly in dog bites. Clinical infection and pasteurellamultocida characterized by

rapid development of an intense inflammatory response with significant pain and

swelling within 24-48 hours. The most common anaerobes in dog are

bacteriodesfragilis, prevotellaporphyrimonas, peptotreptococcus and fusobscterium

species. Approximately 50% of wounds have a least one organism with beta-lactamase

activity. The predominant aerobic organisms isolate from human bites are alpha and

beta-hemolytic streptococci, S. aerus, staphylococcus, epidermidis, corynebacterium

species and eikenellacorrodens. S. aureus produces severe bite wounds infections and

often produce beta-lactamase. The anaerobic bacteria isolated most frequently are

similar to those in dog and cat bites infections.

Dogs were 2nd of the world’s deadliest animals according to BBC news. Rabid dogs

are responsible for the deaths of an estimated 25,000 people per year. In countries

where dogs commonly carry rabies they involved in up to 99% of infections, according

to the WHO (World Health Organization. Countries with large numbers of stray dogs,

including India, are the worst affected. According to the WHO, about 36% of the world’s

rabies deaths – 20,000 of about 55,000 deaths worldwide – occur in India each year,

most of those when children come into contact with infected dogs. Dying from an actual

dog bite is much rare. There is no reliable worldwide data, but in the estimated 4.5

million dog bites in the US every year, only about 30 people die on average.

According to James Pirnay (2017), stray animals are categorized into three types:

street animals, lost animals and abandoned animals. Street animals are born and

reproduce on the street and have never been owned, lost animals which are owned

free-roaming animals that could not find their way home and abandoned animals that

are owned animals who are no longer wanted and left on the street to fend for

themselves or taken to a shelter by their owner. (Pirnay, 2017, p.1).He categorized

different types of stray animals. Categorizing stray animals will help the researchers to

know what types of stray animals are in the university in help of creating possible

solutions that to be used.

In relation to that Louisa Tasker (2016) discussed the problems associated with stray

cats and dogs. First, Public health Zoonosis disease transmission and bite incidence

like rabies transmission cats through bites and scratches. Environmental contamination

like deposition of excreta near or in areas inhabited by people.

Nuisance factors including barking, howling, aggressive interactions, odor/aesthetics,

territorial urine marking, fecal contamination and also damage to livestock and property

like digging in gardens. Lastly, problems in animal welfare that includes malnutrition due

to limited availability of suitable food sources and disease susceptibility abuse by

members of community for stray control measure (Tasker, 2016, p.4).

Students encounter the problems discussed by Tasker that merely affect the

performance or focus of students in any activities in the university.

In the Philippines as said by Claire Wallerstein’s(1999) article, The number of cases

of rabies in the Philippines that currently ranks fourth worldwide in incidence of the

disease is increasing, despite government promises to rid the country of the problem by

2020. In 1998, 362 Filipinos died of rabies, compared with 321 in 1997 and

337 in 1996. About 10000 dogs are believed to be infected with the disease each year.

(Wallerstein, 1999).

The Philippines is ranked at the fourth place worldwide in the issue of rabies

incidents and despite all the programs by government, it is increasing. The research will

be a help to know the current situation of the issue. (Tasker 2016, p.4)

In relation to that, the increasing number of stray animals and incidence associated

by it, PejinLyu (2015) proposed a solution on stray animals. Firstly, government has to

formulate and enact animal rights law as.

The law has to define the definition, feeding and management, legal rights for stray

dogs. Secondly, government and related public sectors have to provide necessary and

sufficient immunity, vaccinating and neutering, medical and rescue services with stray

dogs.

Public health and environmental emergency must improve services on stray dog

disease prevention and treatment. Thirdly, government has to provide and increase the

financial and political support for nongovernmental stray dog protection organizations

and programs. Finally, government and related public sectors have to develop and

implement specific measures to deal with stray dogs, mainly establishing “dog farms”,

distribution of stray dogs, enhance monitoring and controlling, enhancing the advertising

and education of pets’ owners, improve stray dogs’ welfare (Lyu, 2015, p.2).

He proposed solution needs help from government, non-government, sectors and

organizations. Also, it enact right laws in human as well as in stray animals.

by stray animals.

3.) Description of Method or Approach

a.) Research Design/Research Instrument/Data Gathering Procedures

The Research will be conducted at the school. The purpose of the interview is to

evaluate the factors that are associated to stray animals. The approval of the

respondents are important before conducting the interview. The researchers provided

guide questions that will be answered by the respondents. Interpretations of data shall

be processed through psycho analysis. This will involve studies and background of

psychology. The research will be done under the qualitative method which normally

contains subjective data from the respondents.

Researcher’s respondents will be 10 Grade 11 students. The researchers chose

Grade 11 students considering that they are new to the campus. Researchers believe

that choosing them as our respondents is a fair preference because they may

experience any inconvenience brought by these stray animals. The researchers all

There may also be a possibility that the students can be the reason as to why

animals keep on coming inside the campus and increasing its population. As

researchers, any names of the Grade 11 students will not be revealed. Any information

about the said respondents will be kept confidentially.

c.) Data Analysis

manage raw data or the data cleaning. The text or audio will be made into transcripts

the all image data that the researchers gather will be transformed into videos, photos

and chart. Then, the researchers will get a sense of data, wherein they will classify and
