of expressing and resolving personal conflicts, also how to use strategies in linking textual
information, repairing, enhancing communication public speaking, emphasis markers in persuasive
texts, different forms of modals, reflexive and intensive pronouns.

Performance Standard The learner composes a short but powerful persuasive text using a variety of persuasive techniques
and devices.

Lesson /Title Discovering Personal Challenges
Key Concepts/Understandings All definitions attempt to explain or clarify a term.
to be developed: A formal definition consists of three parts: the term, the part of speech to which it belongs, such as a
noun or a verb, and all the traits or characteristics that are specific to that term.
Example:
Term: Freedom
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: The power or right t act, peak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.

In Informal definition, the writer uses known words or examples to explain an unknown term. These
definitions may be synonyms or antonyms introduced by or, in other words, or like.
Example:
Freedom, also referred to as liberty or independence, is a tate people reach when they are free to
think and do whatever they please.

METHODOLOGY
Introductory Activity: Invite the students to work on the pre-requisites to check their background knowledge, and to
(5 minutes) prepare them for the development of their target skills through the following tasks/activities:

Task 1. Blocks that block

Explain to the students that each block represents a saying or well-known phrase.

Have them identify what is being asked by each block.

Tell them to write their answers on their notebooks. See page 7 of LM

Process the activity using the following questions:

1. What is your overall impression about the phrases above?


2. How do they reflect realities in life?

Activity/Analysis Invite the students to work on the pre-requisites to check their background knowledge, and to
(30 minutes) prepare them for the development of their target skills through the following tasks/activities:

Ask the students to remember the time when they were weak and low.
Allow them to fill out the balloons with their experiences in life that have to do with their responses
in Task 1. Let them share their work with their classmates.

Application In a ½ crosswise sheet of paper and answer the following essay question in a 5-sentence paragraph.
(7 minutes)
What are the best traits of Nick Vujicic that make him a grateful person and an effective and
successful speaker? How relevant are those traits to you in developing your self-esteem and achieving
your goals in life?

Wrap-up
Assessment Process student’s written output (application) in a form of sharing of ideas.
(10 minutes)
Assignment Read in advance the reading selection entitled: “Daedalus and Icarus” by Nick Pontikis

Concluding Activity End the class with this saying, “I don’t care if you are a good mathematician or a good athlete, or not
(3 minutes ) good at anything that you think. But I’m gonna come and tell you that you are awesome the way you
are.”
