Negative values for the skewness indicate data that are skewed left and positive values for
the skewness indicate data that are skewed right. By skewed left, we mean that the left tail
is long relative to the right tail. Similarly, skewed right means that the right tail is long
relative to the left tail. If the data are multi-modal, then this may affect the sign of the
skewness.
The height and sharpness of the peak relative to the rest of the data are measured by a number
called kurtosis. Higher values indicate a higher, sharper peak; lower values indicate a lower, less
distinct peak. This occurs because, as Wikipedia’s article on kurtosis explains, higher kurtosis means
more of the variability is due to a few extreme differences from the mean, rather than a lot of
modest differences from the mean.
Balanda and MacGillivray say the same thing in another way: increasing kurtosis is associated with
the “movement of probability mass from the shoulders of a distribution into its center and tails.”

lower and broader, and its tails are shorter and thinner.
higher and sharper, and its tails are longer and fatter.
Correlation and Regression
Nominal
Note: a sub-type of nominal scale with only two categories (e.g. male/female)
is called dichotomous. More than two is called polychotomous.
“Ordinal” is easy to remember because is sounds like “order” and that’s the
key to remember with “ordinal scales”–it is the order that matters, but that’s
all you really get from these.
Advanced note: The best way to determine central tendency on a set of ordinal
data is to use the mode or median; a purist will tell you that the mean cannot
be defined from an ordinal set.
Interval Scales
Here’s the problem with interval scales: they don’t have a “true zero.” For
example, there is no such thing as “no temperature,” at least not with
celsius. In the case of interval scales, zero doesn’t mean the absence of value,
but is actually another number used on the scale, like 0 degrees
celsius. Negative numbers also have meaning. Without a true zero, it is
impossible to compute ratios. With interval data, we can add and subtract, but
cannot multiply or divide.
