Culturally Responsive Teaching at Coon Rapids High School

We believe in the value of all students.


We believe relationships precede learning.
We believe in celebrating the diversity among us.
We believe our diversity makes us a stronger school.

Principle 1 Students are affirmed in their cultural connections.


a. We create “comfort level” for all students (i.e. approachable, etc)
b. We communicate in ways that honor and respect students in all
conversations- easy & tough ones.
c. We show students about them as learners and people.

Principle 2 Teachers are personally inviting.


a. We talk to and treat students in ways that show we like them.
b. We are kind, welcoming, and interested.

Principle 3 Learning environments are physically and culturally inviting.


a. We create rooms that visually represent the diversity of our students.
b. We build course materials (stories, literature, activities, etc) represent diversity of our
students.
Principle 4 Students are reinforced for academic development.
a. We tell stories about and model grit, effort, and growth mindset.
b. We expect all to make mistakes and use these moments to learn and grow.
c. We look for ways to honor students for their hard work and growth towards learning.

Principle 5 Instructional changes are made to accommodate differences in learners.


a. We work to adapt lessons and courses to engage students and tap into students’ interests.
b. We plan for students’ struggles and successes via remediation and enrichment
opportunities.

Principle 6 Classroom is managed with firm, consistent, loving control.


a. We set clear, purposeful, and respectful expectations for how we learn, work, and live
together.
b. We model calm, consistent, and productive problem-solving.

Principle 7 Interactions stress collectivity as well as individuality.


a. We believe that our school is only as great as its individual members.
