Retrievable Anchor-Stock

Anchor-Stock/Sidetrack System is Retrievable in One Trip Multiple sidetracks can be drilled from a cased hole using retrievable Anchor- Stock. The Anchor-Stock can be retrieved in one trip and another Anchor-Stock set at a new depth and a new window cut. The retrievable Anchor-Stock is a one-piece whipstock and anchor with the same criteria and reliability as the permanent Anchor-Stock system. The retrievable Anchor-Stock is oriented and hydraulically set in one trip. Its anti-rotational design keeps it firmly

in place. The retrievable Anchor-Stock allows the hole to be cleared without orientation of the retrieving tool and other windows to be milled if desired.

FEATURES

• Set and orient in one trip.

• No movement of whip or anchor.

• Strong shear bolt assures anchor setting before milling.

• Retrievable in one trip.

• Reduces cost of sidetracking.

• Saves costly time.

Retrievable Econo-Stock

The Econo-Stock is a retrievable, mechanically set whipstock that offers substantial design improvements over competing products. Activation occurs when 3,600 lb of weight are set down after a trigger rod contacts a plug in the casing. Applying additional weight sets the anchor and shears the starter mill bolt. The starter mill and shear bolt block are new features. A shear-down “shoulder” prevents the starter mill from jamming and enhances the setting of the anchor. Multiple slips provide excellent load and torque capacity. The slips are held in position by a ratchet ring that provides equal loading in all directions. To release the anchor, the whip is engaged using the same retrieving tool as the field-proven retrievable Anchor- Stock. An upward pull releases the anchor, and the slips fully retract as the tool is pulled from the well.

Unlike many competing “economy” tools, the Econo-Stock provides a full complement of important benefits:

• Anchor setting requires no hydraulic pressure.

• Retrievable with conventional tools.

• Multiple-tongue-and-groove slip design provides uniform stress-loading on casing and enhanced anti-rotation capabilities.

• Simultaneously activated, full-contact slips centralize the anchor assembly in the casing.

• Retractable slips prevent casing drag during retrieval.

• Ratchet ring and nut for maintaining “set.”

• Bi-directional loading capability.

• Shear-down design prevents starter mill from jamming.

Retrievable Pack-Stock

This system, developed through years of experience, is a one-trip, combina- tion packer/whipstock sidetracking system. It’s a patented tool that offers significant advantages over the orig- inal, mechanically set whipstocks prevalent since the 1930s, and it’s an attractive alternative to conventional sidetracking procedures. The Pack- Stock system yields significant savings in both time and cost. It’s ideal for sidetracking cased holes during re-drill or re-entry in old or mar- ginal wells. The Pack-Stock can be set at any depth, immediately above a cas- ing collar. The system offers substantial advantages over the conventional two- trip whipstock/packer assembly:

• Economical and efficient — one trip to locate packer depth, orient, set packer and start milling. • The custom-designed packer prevents movement or rotation of the Pack-Stock.

• Clearance provided minimizes hole-swabbing or hang-ups.

• The shear bolt ensures setting of the packer prior to milling.

• A large slip area reduces casing stress and provides a more positive anchor set.

• The ability to mill through two strings of casing.

• A proven 3° face angle to provide positive kickoff, regardless of formation or hole angle.

• Retrievable in one trip.

OPERATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The Pack-Stock system is run in the hole to depth on a starter mill. For a preferred angle or direction, a muleshoe sub can be run and surveyed with an orienting device. If orientation in a spe- cific direction is required, or if the hole angle will exceed 4°, the Pack-Stock assembly should be set 90° or less to the right or left of the hole’s high side.

Trackmaster

The only one-trip window-milling system The Trackmaster* is the only full-gage system that lets you open a sidetrack window in just one trip. It’s a self- contained unit that reduces sidetrack- ing costs by as much as 50%. In a single trip in and out of the hole, you accomplish all seven of the major steps needed for cutting a sidetrack window:

• Run the assembly.

• Orient the whipstock (with MWD).

• Set the whipstock hydraulically.

• Shear the mill from the whipstock assembly.

• Mill and dress the window.

• Drill a full-gage rathole.

• Pull out of the hole. The result is a full-size window completed in minimal time, providing a full-gage rathole for the directional assembly. The Trackmaster system is available in a full range of sizes for 4 1 2- through 13 3 8-in. casing. The system includes all necessary auxiliary equipment.

Multilateral Completions

By definition, a multilateral well is one in which one or more wells are drilled, and extend, from a main well- bore which can be vertical, angled or horizontal. The main, or “mother,” bore serves as the single point of juncture for the branching wells.

MULTILATERAL APPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS

One of the advantages of multilateral technology is that it can be applied to both new and existing wells, whether the established ones are active or abandoned. This versatility gives operators several benefits and economic advantages:

gives operators several benefits and economic advantages: • Within a reservoir, isolated pockets of hydrocarbons

• Within a reservoir, isolated pockets of hydrocarbons that might otherwise be left in the ground can be tapped.

• The improvement of reservoir drainage increases the volume of recoverable reserves and enhances the economics of marginal pay zones.

• Multiple targets improve the sweep efficiency within a single formation.

• Multiple reservoirs can be drained simultaneously, and thin production intervals that might be uneconom- ical to produce alone become eco- nomical when produced together.

• Development costs decrease through the use of the existing infrastructure such as surface equipment and the wellbore.

• Multilaterals expand platform capa- bilities where slots are limited, and they eliminate spacing problems by allowing more drainholes to be added within a reservoir.

• By sidetracking damaged formations or completions, the life of existing wells can be extended.

• Laterals may be drilled below the problem area once casing has been set, reducing the risk of drilling through troubled zones.

• Multiple completions from one well- bore facilitate heavy oil drainage.

• Multilateral completions accommo- date more wells with fewer footprints, making them ideal for environmen- tally sensitive or challenging areas.

THE SEVEN LEVELS OF MULTILATERAL COMPLEXITY

There are a variety of geometric config- urations that are possible, determined mainly by the wellbore requirements. The Technology Advancement of Multilaterals (TAML) group has defined seven levels of multilateral completion that are generally recognized and accepted throughout the industry. In some writings, these levels will be referred to as “TAML Level 1”, “TAML Level 2” and so forth. Level 1. Open, unsupported junc- tion with a “barefoot” mother (main)

bore and a lateral or slotted liner hung in either bore. Level 2. Mother bore cased and cemented with the lateral open. The lateral is either barefoot or has a slotted liner hung in open hole. Level 3. Mother bore cased and cemented; the lateral is cased but not cemented. The lateral liner is “anchored” to the mother bore with

a liner hanger, but is not cemented. Level 4. Mother bore and lateral cased and cemented. Both bores are cemented at the junction. Level 5. Pressure integrity at the junction achieved via completion; cement is not acceptable. Level 6. Pressure integrity at the junction achieved via casing; cement is not acceptable. Level 6S. Downhole splitter with pressure integrity — a large mother bore with two smaller lateral bores. Patented by Marathon and licensed to Baker Hughes and National Oilwell.

Anchoring Options

The Retrievable Anchor-Stock, the industry’s first, true one-trip sidetrack- ing system is deployed to setting depth, oriented and set hydraulically. This saves trips, time and the possibility of error when orienting. If retrieval is desired, it is accomplished in one trip, and the wellbore is left with no restrictions.

The Retrievable Pack-Stock is run and set in one trip like the Retrievable Anchor-Stock, but this system provides isolation from the lower wellbore. Communication is re-established by retrieving the anchor — in one trip — leaving the wellbore unrestricted.

The TAM Inflatable Retrievable Anchor is run, oriented and set hydraulically in a single trip. The patented element design enables the packer to set in irregularly shaped holes and provide the torque resis- tance needed for milling. When removing the whipstock, the packer may be retrieved or left in the hole.

The Retrievable Econo-Stock is a mechanically set anchor, requiring a plug in the wellbore to initiate setting. Patented tongue-and-groove slips ensure full, centralized slip contact, providing superior anti-rotation and bi-directional-loading capabilities. The slip-retaining feature prevents pre-setting while the anchor is being run in the hole.

The Millennium Packer is set via wireline and provides the oriented platform for sidetracking and future re-entry. When orientation of the packer has been determined, the whipstock and retrievable latch are oriented at the surface to the selected kickoff point and run in the hole. When retrieved, the packer remains in place for future reference, while allowing access to the zones below.

The MX Packer is deployed in the hole with the whipstock, oriented, set hydraulically, and the window is milled. When the whipstock is retrieved, the retrievable latch disen- gages from the packer, leaving the packer in place to provide the platform for additional laterals to be drilled.

Reamaster Underreamer

Innovative Design Improves Underreaming The Reamaster underreamer* is the

result of years of development and test- ing. The objective was to develop an underreamer that far exceeded the inherent limitations of conventional underreamers: low weight-carrying capacity, short bearing life and mar- ginal hydraulics. The Reamaster tool has achieved these improvements and excels over conventional underreamers. It features:

• Sustained drilling weight equivalent to bit.

• Larger cones and bearings for extended on-bottom time.

• Enhanced hydraulics for better hole cleaning.

• Capable of simultaneous underreaming-while-drilling (UWD). Substantially Reduces Overall Casing and Cementing Costs Now you can save money by optimiz- ing casing sizes on multiple string wells. The Reamaster underreamer is specifically designed to underream long intervals and provide the cementing space needed to run minimum clear- ance casing programs. You can design a slimmer top hole for a given diameter production zone or for a larger-than- standard production zone for a given hole size. Reamaster systems are only available on a rental basis in conjunc- tion with Smith Services job supervi- sion. Contact your nearest Smith representative concerning availability.

Rock-Type Underreamer

The RTU products are the most rugged tri-cone underreamers built. They utilize the largest cones available, enabling them to underream to nearly twice their own body diameter. The tools are opened hydraulically. They lock in full open posi- tion while hydraulic pressure is main- tained. When the pumps shut down, the arms collapse back into the body. Common applications for these underreamers include underreaming for open-hole gravel pack completions, for special casing programs in heaving shales or fault zones, and for opening up a section in preparation for sidetracking.

FEATURES

• A wide selection of cone and cutter types (milled tooth, TCI or PDC*) allows the best choice for the given formation.

• The tool does not restrict volume of circulation.

• Orifices are available in different sizes to tailor performance to mud volume and specific conditions.

• Rugged construction with a minimum number of parts ensures trouble-free operation.

• Cutter arms can be quickly changed on the rig floor.

Drag-Type Underreamer

With SPX Cutters The drag-type underreamer,* featuring cutter arms dressed with polycrystalline diamond compact drill blanks, has com- pletely changed the economics of under- reaming in many situations. The SPX drag-type underreamer has significantly improved both rate of penetration and on-bottom time in soft to medium-hard formations. Because the cutter arms work on the drag principle, the tool can open a larger diameter hole than a con- ventional three-cone underreamer. This tool is ideally suited for open-hole gravel pack completions, oversized liner jobs and other deep or long interval jobs where tool performance is critical.

Servcoloy “S” Hardmetal Cutters The drag-type underreamer with Servcoloy “S” hardmetal cutters is used in poorly consolidated, soft to medium formations where large diameter inter- vals are required for gravel packing or cementing. It is also an effective tool for bell-hole operations in fault zones, as well as for water-well drilling. Pilot holes can be enlarged up to three times the body diameter in a single trip. These tools can be operated with water, mud, air, aerated mud or any other circula- tion fluid. The low-cost cutter arms are field-replaceable. Wall Scrapers Three-blade wall scrapers are also available in all common sizes upon request.

Master Driller Hole Opener 12 1 ⁄ 4 " Through 36" The Master Driller hole

Master Driller Hole Opener

12 1 4" Through 36" The Master Driller hole opener is well-suited for soft to medium-hard formations where a variety of hole sizes and formations are encoun- tered. It is also an excellent tool when there are rotary table size restrictions.

FEATURES

• One body can open several different hole sizes simply by changing arms. This is an advantage on locations with limited rig space or where there are logistics problems.

• When rotary table size restrictions exist, cutter arms may be installed below the rotary table.

• The Master Driller hole opener util- izes rock bit cones. This permits a wide selection of cones so the right cone can be selected for the right job.

• Three replaceable jet bit nozzles are featured to ensure effective hole cleaning.
