IOT PEN

Prompt

Identify and analyze a device that is an IoT device now, but in the past was a non-IoT device.
Describe and list the features of the device.
A device besides a traditional computer added with computational intelligence and a network
connection to improve the function of the device is known as an IoT device.

A device which was a non-IoT device but is now used as an IoT device is a "PEN". A famous
saying says, "A PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN A SWORD ".

Traditionally, a pen was used just for writing purposes. It could perform no other function other
than this.

An IoT based pen is one which has the ability to perform some additional functionalities rather than
just writing. The basic elements of an IoT pen are a mini camera, a digital notepad with digital
paper, a microprocessor-based data processing system and a connectivity. The weight, size and price
of an IoT pen with notepad are significantly lower than those of portable computers. They can work
for several days without needing a recharge. It can be used as a recorder. A pen can have an in-
built camera and microphone to record the audio and video. It can thus be used for a sting
operation or other investigation purposes. It can also be used as a GPS device. So individuals can
use it for their security and for accessing one's location. It can be used as a SOS device in case of an
emergency. This pen can also be used as a scanner to scan certain wriiten material and send it to a
particular sender. This process can be accomplished with the help of a flashlight. As the flash is
directed towards the written text, it scans it and stores it in its memory. The recordings can be sent
to any peripheral devices connected to this IoT based pen via an internet connection.

Some features of this IoT based pen can be summarized as follows:-

1. It can be used as a traditional pen for writing purposes only.
2. It can be used to record audio and videos.
3. It can also be used as a GPS device.
4. It can be used as a SOS device.
5. It can be used to scan written material.
6. It can convert handwritten notes into text, allowing mobile users to create and share "mobile
notes".

Thus it can be said that a pen is INDEED mightier than the sword.

Prompt
Compare the functions of the device in the past to the functions of the device now.
In modern days, the technology has evolved a lot. This technology can be used anywhere and
everywhere. With IoT, the devices can do the processing, surveying rather than an individual putting
in his time and effort for that work.

FUNCTIONS OF A TRADITIONAL PEN IN THE PAST

1. A traditional pen is used just for one purpose that is writing.
2. It can perform no other function other than writing.
3.It is thus a General Purpose Pen.

FUNCTIONS OF AN IoT BASED PEN IN THE PRESENT

The IoT pen can be used for various purposes other than a general purpose pen. It can perform the
following functions:
1.It can perform the task of a traditional pen (writing).
2. It can record audio and videos.
3. It uses GPS to determine the current location of the user.
4. It can be used as a SOS device.
5. It can scan written material.
6. All the information collected in the above 5 points are shared via an internet connectivity.

Prompt
For your chosen IoT device, list any improvements or any diminishments if they exist, over the
non-IOT device. Describe any limitations that are present in the new IoT version of the device.
Currently, IoT frameworks seem to focus on real-time data logging solutions, offering some basis
to work with many "things" and have them interact. Future developments might lead to specific
software-development environments to create the software to work with the hardware used in the
Internet of things. Newer platforms are being developed, which add more intelligence.

CHALLENGES:-
1. Developing a framework for connecting all of these devices to central servers for secure storage,
and on to other devices such as printers or scanners.
2.The Internet of things requires huge scalability in the network space to handle the surge of
devices.

LIMITATIONS:-
1.Since it is a small device, its features cannot be expanded much.
2.The quality of the audios and the videos may not be high-definition.
3.Noise may be present in the recordings as it uses a basic camera and microphone.
4.For scanning mode, the pen needs good lighting.
5.Also in scanning mode, the pen first needs to identify the text, so the movement of the pen should
not be very fast.
6.It is costly as compared to the traditional pen.

Prompt
Describe any privacy issues with the IoT device that never existed in the original version of
the device. Compare the price of the original device to the price of the new IoT version of the
device. When performing a price comparison, attempt to normalize for the changing value of
currency over time by using an online inflation calculator.
PRIVACY : This is a great concern when it comes to exchanging valuable information regarding
anything. Since everything will be connected breaching inside the network would be easy by the
hackers. By entering into just a part of network would reveal everything regarding an individual or
organization or both (may be).

SAFETY : Since the consumer that time would be dependent entirely on the technology there
would be least probability that he would bother checking anything. The verification today is done
manually by the consumer himself but no one knows what will happen later.

DEVICE LACKS SECURE STORAGE

The System on Chip (SoC) used by the device has no provision to securely store confidential
material. An attacker with physical access can attain full gain of the stored information.

PRICE:-
1.Old Device- Rs. 50- Rs. 2000
2.New Device- Rs. 4000- Rs. 9000

The IoT based pen performs many functions, thus it is feasible to use this pen eventhough it is very
costly as compared to the traditional pen.
