Montage Waveform Editor Manual

1. Main View
The program can open and save Montage Backup (X7A), Library (X7L) and User (X7U)
files as well as MODX Backup (X8A), Library (X8L) and User (X8U) files. It can also
convert User files to Library files and vice versa.

When you open a file, you get the following View:

This View consists of the following items

Libraries Tab (available only for Backup files)

Here you can select which Montage/MODX Bank you want to edit. This includes the User
Bank and 8 Library Banks which are available on the Synth. Of course, if you open a
User or Library file (not a Backup File) this Library Tab will not show up and you will only
see the Section Tab which is described below.

Sections Tab

Here you can select which section of data you want to Edit.
This includes Waveforms, Arpeggios, Curves, Performances and Live Sets.

2
Montage Waveform Editor Manual

Both Library Tabs and Section Tabs are shown highlighted only if they contain data.
This is a convenient way to have an overview of what exists and where in each file.

Status Bar

The Status Bar displays the following items:

• File Version: this is the version of the current file. Files created from Montage OS
v2.0 have version 4.0.4. This is also the default version for new files created by
the Montage Waveform Editor. It is recommended to work with files of version
4.0.4 because Live Set dependencies do not work with older versions. Also, it is
not possible to copy/paste items between different file versions because the item
format is not guaranteed to be the same between different versions. If you have
downloaded or created files older than version 4.0.4 it is recommended to
upgrade them to version 4.0.4. To do this load the file to your Montage running
OS v2.0 and then save it back. Montage will convert the file to version 4.0.4!
MODX files are version 5.0.0.
• Number and Size of Waveforms: this is the total number of Waveforms of the file,
and the total Waveforms size.
• Number and Size of Waveforms of current bank: this is the total number of
Waveforms and their size only for the selected Bank.
• Number of Arpeggios
• Number of Curves
• Number of Performances
• Number of Live Sets

o AKAI AKP files

o WAV, AIFF, MP3, WMA, FLAC, OGG audio files.

• Import Keybanks
Imports Keybanks to the currently selected Waveform. Reads WAV, AIFF, MP3,
WMA, FLAC or OGG audio files. If the files include loop, keyboard range and
velocity information the software will import that information too. If Root Key or
Velocity Range information is included in the file names, Waveform Editor can
read this information too:

In the depicted example all wav files that are being imported are named as
ps20_p1_01_021_a-1

where ps20_p1_01 is the instrument name, 021 is the velocity high limit and
a-1 the root key of the sample. This means that all files are following the pattern

{name}_{velo}_{key}

If you enter this pattern in the "Matching Pattern" field, then the information for
each file is extracted automatically. If you press OK the selected audio files will
be loaded as Keybanks together with the extracted information! To create key
ranges based on the Root Keys that were extracted you can use the Keyboard
Split -> [Split around roots] command (see Keybank Menu).

3. Sample Editor

The Sample Editor is a powerful editor that helps you define loop points of samples as
well as apply DSP effects to them.

List of Operations:

• Play
Auditions the sample and loops thru the defined loop points. You can even
change the loop points while playing. You can use the space key for this
command. You can change the playing position even while playing by clicking
outside the Waveform Display.

• Zoom In, Ζoom Out

Zooms the sample data so you can have a better view of the sample points. You
can use Ctrl Key + Mouse Wheel Up or Down for these commands. When only a
portion of the sample data is viewable due to Zoom-In command you can drag
the sample data to the left or to the right by clicking on it and moving left or
right. You can also use the scrollbar below the sample data to move the viewable
portion.

23
Montage Waveform Editor Manual

• Fit
Resets the zoom operations. You can double click on the sample data for this
command.

• Undo
Cancels the last command and returns the sample to the previous state

• Redo
Re-applies the last command and returns the sample to the apporopriate state

• Normalize
Maximizes the Volume of the sample to a user defined value. Default is 98%

• Fade In
Generates a fade-in effect from the starting point of the sample. Very useful if
you want to change the starting point of the sample and want the playback to
start smoothly. The Length parameter represents the portion of the effective
sample length (end point – starting point). You can experiment with different
Curve and Length settings to achieve best results.

24
Montage Waveform Editor Manual

• Fade Out
Generates a fade-out effect towards the ending point of the sample. The Length
parameter represents the portion of the effective sample length (end point –
starting point). You can experiment with different Curve and Length settings to
achieve best results.

• Crossfade
Creates a crossfade loop so that the sample loops smoothly.

Curve values range from -64 (Slow logarithmic curve) to 0 (linear curve) to +63
(fast exponential curve). The starting point is the point in the Loop Window
where the cross fade will start. You can experiment with different Curve and
Starting Point values to achieve best audio results.

• Alternating Loop
Emulates the Forward/Backward Loop Mode which is not supported by the
Montage/MODX by duplicating a reversed copy of the Loop Section.

• Reverse
Reverses the whole sample to enable playing it backwards. Useful to detect
hidden messages!!!

• Trim
Cuts off sample data before the start point and after the end loop point.

If you right click on the sample data a context menu appears with the following
additional operations:

• Set Start Point Here

Moves the Start Point to the point where you right-clicked.

4. Parameter Edit
We have tried to provide you with the most clean, simple and easy to tweak controls and
we hope we have achieved perfect results. You can tweak the synth parameters using
the mouse (mouse buttons and wheel) and your keyboard; you can select parameters
using menus and you can see valuable information in tool-tips. Each control is
specifically designed according to the type of synth parameter it is designed to control.

Sliders
Level, Pan, Root and Tune parameters are controlled by sliders.
You can tweak these parameters in several ways:

Keyboard Input
• [+], Up, Right
These buttons increase the parameter by 1.
• [-], Down, Left
These buttons decrease the parameter by 1.
• PageUp
This button increases the parameter by ¼ of its total range.
• PageDown
This button decreases the parameter by ¼ of its total range.
• Home
This button sets the parameter to its maximum value.
• End
This button sets the parameter to its minimum value.
• Numeric data entry
Sliders can accept numeric input data from the keyboard. Digits ‘0’ – ‘9’ as well
as ‘-’, ‘+’ and ‘.’ symbols can be used which means that negative and even
decimal values can be accepted.

27
Montage Waveform Editor Manual

Mouse Input
• Left Click on the value and Drag
If you move to the right, dragging will cause increment of the value by 1 for each
pixel you move. If you move to the left, dragging will cause decrement of the
value by 1 for each pixel you move.
• Left Click on the bar
The parameter will get the exact value that corresponds to the position on the
bar you clicked. This is more comfortable than the previous method for
parameters that have a wide range of values.
• Double Click, Left+Right Click
The parameter will revert to its default value.
• Mouse Wheel
Increases the parameter by 1 if you move upwards and decreases it by 1 if you
move downwards.

MIDI Keyboard Input

Root Key parameter accepts Key information from the selected MIDI Input port of the
Application. If you right-click on it or press [F2] its value blinks meaning that it is
waiting for MIDI Input. The note you press on the MIDI Keyboard becomes the new
value of the parameter. Pressing Escape or left-clicking cancels the waiting state.

Range Sliders
Key Range and Velocity Range parameters are controlled by Range Sliders. Range
sliders respond to both keyboard and mouse input:

Keyboard Input
The keyboard buttons below control the first parameter (lower limit). They control the
second parameter (higher limit) if you hold down the [Shift] key simultaneously.
• F2
See section "MIDI Keyboard Input"

Mouse Input
• Left Click on a value and Drag
If you move to the right, dragging will cause increment of the value by 1 for each
pixel you move. If you move to the left, dragging will cause decrement of the
value by 1 for each pixel you move.

• Left Click on the bar and Drag

The lower parameter will get the exact value that corresponds to the position on
the bar you clicked. While you drag the mouse pointer you alter the value of the
upper parameter.
• Right Click
See section "MIDI Keyboard Input".
• Double Click
The parameters will revert to their default values.
• Mouse Wheel
Increases the lower parameter by 1 if you move upwards and decreases it by 1 if
you move downwards. If you hold down the [Shift] key the mouse wheel controls
the upper parameter.

MIDI Keyboard Input

Range Sliders accept MIDI Keyboard Input. Right click on the lower parameter (or press
[F2] once) or right click on the upper parameter (or press [F2] twice) and its value will
start blinking, indicating that the control is waiting for MIDI keyboard input. Press a key
on your MIDI keyboard and the note or the velocity of the pressed key will be sent.
Pressing Escape or left-clicking on the slider cancels its waiting state. Using a MIDI
keyboard is a very comfortable way of defining keyboard splits or velocity ranges!
