As explained in 6.2, the designation system used in this

agreed that these designations should be used when
referencing steel grades in accordance with this standard.
For the UK edition of this standard only grades Fe 360 A,
Fe 430 A and Fe 510 A are specified in annex D 'Non-
conflicting national additions'. These are the former grades
40A, 43A and 50A in BS 4360 : 1986 which have been
redesignated for consistency with the designations of the
other grades in this standard. The full l i s t of designations is:

This European Standard has been drawn up by

ECISS/TC 10 "Structural steel - qualities" whose
Secretariat is held by NNI.
This document was originally drawn up as a draft Euro-
norm under the European Coal and Steel Community.
With the formation of ECISS and the establishment of the
ECISS work programme TC 10 was asked to prepare this
document for eventual publication as a European Standard.
This European Standard replaces EURONORM 25-72
"Structural steels for general application".
It has been submitted to the CEN Formal Vote on
8 November 1989.
It has been adopted and ratified by CEN/BT on 30 March
1990.
According to the Common CENKENELEC Rules,
the following countries are bound to implement this
European Standard: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg,
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland and United Kingdom.

Annex A. Location of samples and test pieces (see EURONORM 18)

(This annex forms an integral part of this standard.)

This annex gives information on the usual location of

samples and test pieces in the absence of requirements in
the product quality standard and the order.
The following three categories of products are covered:
- beams, channels, angles, T sections and 2 sections
(figure A 1)
- bars and wire (including wire rod) (figure A 2)
- flat products (figure A 3).

Location of samples 2)

Figure A 1: Beams, channels, angles, T sections and Z sections

By agreement, the sample can be taken from the web, at a quarter of the total height.

')Test pieces are taken from the sample as indicated in figure A 3. For sections with inclined flanges, machining of the
inclined

For products with small dimensions ( d o r b =Z 25 mm) the t e s t piece, if possible, consists o f an unmachined full section
of the product,
2, For products of diameter or thickness d 40 mm the manufacturer may either apply
- the rules specified for products of diameter or thickness d 25 mm, or
- take the t e s t piece a t a location nearer the centre than indicated in the figure.
3, For products of round cross section, the axis of the notch is approximately a diagonal; for products with rectangular
cross section, the axis of the notch is perpendicularto the greatest rolled surface.

In case of doubt or dispute, for products of thickness greater than or equal to 3 mm use proportional test pieces of gauge
length Lo = 5.65 dSo.For normal testing, for reasons of economy, t e s t pieces of a constant measuring length may be used
provided the result obtained for elongation after breaking is converted by a recognized formula (see, for example, I S 0 2566
- Conversionof elongation values).
For products of thickness greater than 30 mm a round t e s t piece may be used if agreed between the parties.

Annex D. Non-conflicting national additions

(This part of this European Standard applies only for the
United Kingdom version of this standard.)
In the United Kingdom the grades 40 A, 43 A and 50 A
are widely used. These grades have no specified impact
properties. The other mechanical properties are the same
as those specified in table 4 for F e 360 B, Fe 430 B and
Fe 510 B.
The chemical composition of the ladle analysis for flat
and long products is specified in table 11.
