political regime and modern architecture lead to two para-
doxically opposing responses: the authoritarian classicism
of the E42, and investigations of the traditional rural house.
At the beginnings of the forties, a contradictory framework
seems to have reproduced some of the same themes de-
bated in international circles of modern architecture: the rela-
tion between monumentalism and modern architecture" and
the revalorization of the regional and traditional dirnensions?.
The warlO augmented the isolation of the different protago-
nists. And it accelerated some of the thematic orientations
already outlined at the end of the 1930s that were made
more pressing due to the world conflict. These included the
issues of housing for everyone, constructional activity, and
the reconstruction of historie centers. Ridolfil1 and Libera, in
tandem with Diotallevi·Marescotti, worked independently in
design manual s that facilitated the standardization of
architectonic elements, and the rationalization of constructed
elements. Pagano'? and Rogers' 3 intervened with texts dedi-
cated to reconstruction, building systems and prefabrication,
clearly indicating the theoretical premises that would partially
mark out the debate in the immediate postwar periodoAppar-
ently the relation with tradition and history seemed to have
become secondary, given the gravity of what was occurring.

y operativas distintas.
