Journal Reflection 4

Despite several problems during the first run through, our lesson plan ended up going

quite smoothly the second time after making several changes. When planning our lesson, pacing

was our biggest concern. It was hard to predict exactly how long each activity would take. Our

first class, the lecture part of our class went really well. Since we played clips of popular music

at the beginning of class, the students were very engaged from the beginning. However, the

charades activity was chaotic and unsuccessful. We miscommunicated, and since our rules were

unclear, the students were going through the charades words too quickly. The students were

confused about the directions, and since we were moving way to fast, we ended up changing the

directions which confused them more. It was very chaotic because the students were confused

but also very competitive. We ended up stopping the activity and revising the rules, which helped

slow the students down and get them a bit more organized. However, many were still confused

and the revised directions still had many problems.

After the class, we felt terrible about how the charades activity went. We reflected on

what went wrong and made many changes. We changed the charades by splitting the students

into two groups rather than six groups. In two groups the game was easier to manage. However,

it was still hard to get volunteers to act out the charades. We demonstrated how to play charades

and did an example, so they could clearly see how the game is played. Also, since the lecture and

charades moved quickly, we had a lot of extra time at the end of the lesson. We decided to add
skits as another activity. The students worked in groups of four and to write their skits. The skits

went really well. We explained the directions carefully and the students really enjoyed our

example skit because it was humorous and incorporated Greg. The students sometimes needed

help brainstorming and with grammar questions, but overall they were very creative and did a

very good job. It was so entertaining to watch the skits and it was rewarding that the students

were enjoying the lesson and retaining the material.

The lesson gradually got better as we made changes and improved. We made minor

changes to our handouts and PPT in order to make definitions more clear. And we changed the

activities to make them run more smoothly. After a couple times teaching the material, I felt

much more comfortable teaching the lesson. I was really happy with the students’ engagement.

During our next lesson plan we will make sure to carefully plan the activities to make sure it runs

smoothly during the first class.
