I. English grammar review on writing

1. Subject and Verb agreement

a. Do I drop or retain "s" on a verb

- Singular-singular (with s), Plural-plural (no s)

b. "be" has

two past tense: were/ was

c. Identify subject and accessories/ intervening words, make sure to refer only on the subject not the
accessories

c.1 Some nouns ending in "s" but are in singular form

d. Here/ there will never be the subject

e. Make the verb in a question agree with its subject

f. Use plural verb with compound subjects joined by end

I. How to read cases

1. Importance

- Decisions of SC form part of the laws of the land (Art 8, New Civil Code)

- Due process requirement under constitution (Art 3, Sec 1)

- Apply law under the circumstances of the case

- stare decisis et non quieta movere (same ruling on same set of scenario)

2. Basic legal terminologies

- Jurisprudence: decisions of Supreme Court, only SC has the constitutional mandate to interpret laws

- stare decisis et non quieta movere: stand by decided matters

- ponente: write the decision, part of SC

- main decision: majority decision, sets precedent, ONLY this forms part of the land
