Dimensioning guidelines
for expansion tanks of solar plants in the
small range
The expansion tank is used for accommodat-
ing the expansion in volume of the heat carrier
fluid in the solar circuit. Its size must be select-
ed according to the applicable design regula-
tions for expansion tanks.
If there is a possibility of the plant operating
in standby mode for a long period, i.e. with-
out heat output, it is necessary for the expan-
sion tank to be able to hold the entire content
of the collector array in addition to the expan-
sion volume.

Circuit
The expansion tank must be arranged with a
safety valve in the return to the collector which
cannot be blocked off, as a result of which
there is bound to be follow-up pressure mainte-
nance, i.e. integration of the expansion tank on
the pressure side of the circulating pump.

Selected example - solar installation,

safety valve 6 bar:
Installation with 6 UltraSol collectors vertical
System height 15 m

Take account of the following for the effective

expansion volume in litres:

1. Volume: Collector field volume and flow

at 100%
Plant volume at 10 % incl. heat
exchanger

2. Useful volume of the pressure expansion

tank depending on the system height.

6 vertical UltraSol collectors of 2.5 litres at 100 % 15.2 l

Flow 12.5 litres at 100 % 12.5 l
Return 12.5 litres at   10 % 1.25 l
Heat exchanger 37 litres at   10 % 3.7 l
Expansion volume 32.63 l
Min. preliminary pressure:
System height + 0.3 bar = 1.8 bar (18 m)
In the table, select the next-higher preliminary
pressure: 2 bar Selection table Reflex NG/N
If the expansion tank is connected on the pres- with safety valve 6 bar
sure side of the pump, the pressure value of the Capacity VN of the empty expansion tank in litres
pump must be included in calculation to prevent with a pre-pressure of
cavitation.

Particularly in the transitional period and in for water heating and heating support
connection with low-temperature heating sys

Solar storage tanks

The heat supplied by the solar collectors is
transferred in the solar storage. The solar
storage bridges the time gap between heat
recovery and consumption. The solar storage
tank incl. connections and flanges should be
well insulated and all connection pipes should
be connected with a siphon.
