WHEN MY WIFE, DEBBIE, was just seven years old, she sat in a children’s
church service in our Medford, Oregon, church. During that service God spoke
to her heart through the songs, testimonies, and sermon. Upon realizing His
love for her, she gave Him her life, and still looks back to that moment as the one

adults around her who chose a different path, and the contrast did not escape
her. Serving the Lord was the path she found appealing.
What she did not realize as a child was that each adult she observed serv-
ing the Lord did so with a determination to take a stand when their faith was
put to the test. When Ron Gaddis preached about the Hebrew children during

our recent camp meeting, he made the
point that taking a stand is required of all
of us if we want to make Heaven. While
he preached that sermon during a young
adult service (see page 16), that message applies to each of us.
In her late teens, Debbie was confronted with her own challenge when her
closest friends chose not to serve God. Would she stand firm or would she
follow them? It was not a difficult decision, though it was a trying experience. It
occurred to her that if she “took a break” from serving the Lord, those observing
her choice would not be aware of her intention to get saved again. Nor could she
be certain that she could escape sin without permanently marring her life.
She had been deeply impressed by the examples of stability in her life, although
these faithful people were unaware of the impact they were having. She chose to
stand fast as they had; it did not make sense to her to do otherwise. She is so glad
she did, and eventually those friends repented and were saved.
I am glad she did, too, because within four years of that time, I went into
an Apostolic Faith church service in Dallas, Oregon, where she was attending
and helping in Sunday school and the music. Little did we know that day that
we would be married in the same church nearly two years later. That was forty
years, two children, and seven grandchildren ago! The hallmark of Debbie’s life
has continued to be her stability, consistency, and unassuming manner.
Taking a stand does not end with our youth. Over the years, challenges emerge
and pressure is brought to bear to comprise what we stand for. By the grace of
God, may we all be determined to continue to stand firm in our faith.

R
ecently a lady
who was fill-
ing out a form
for me asked what ethnicity
I identified with. Her question
reminded me of our culture’s
confusion over gender identity. That
confusion did not exist when I was
born. In fact, the first words spoken in
the delivery room upon my arrival in
this world would have come from the
doctor who declared, “It’s a boy!” Per-
haps the nurse repeated, “It’s a boy,”
when she handed me to my mother.
Then I am sure the next comment
would have been my mother saying,
“He is adorable!” Whatever the exact
words, those present identified me by
my gender.
In our Christian lives, what really
matters is not how we identify our-
selves but how God identifies us. Once
we yield our lives to Him, others will
see the evidence in our daily lives. In
Acts 11:26 we read how the early fol-
lowers of Christ were identified: “And
the disciples were called Christians
first in Antioch.” Certain actions
and behaviors distinguished these
believers from unbelievers, and the
society around them took notice.
After Pentecost, the followers of
Christ had been scattered abroad due
to persecution, and wherever they
went, they took their testimonies. The
result in Antioch was that others in that
city believed on Jesus including, to the
surprise of some, a number of Greeks
(or Gentiles). At that point in time, the
general understanding was that the
Jews were the ones to whom the Gospel
had been entrusted. We read in Acts
chapter 11 that when word of the con-
version of Gentiles came to the leaders
of the Early Church in Jerusalem, they
dispatched Barnabas—a man who was
noted for being a son of consolation,
a comforter, and an encourager—to
help bridge the gap between believing
Jews and the newly converted Gentiles.
In Antioch, Barnabas exhorted the
believers to cleave to the Lord “with
purpose of heart,” just as we would
exhort new converts in our day. It takes
purpose to get saved; it takes determi-
nation to turn your back on the old
life and go in a new way. If you have
experienced salvation recently or a

 long time ago, maintain
that purpose and deter-

Barnabas felt that he needed
help so he went and found Paul

Saul) and brought him to that city.
There they spent a year admonishing
and encouraging the new believers.

Scriptures, likely expounding much of
what you hear in our church services
today, because the fundamental pre-
cepts of God’s Word have not changed.

those who had become Christians.
When a person begins to serve the
Lord, that fact cannot escape atten-
tion. There is a noticeable change! That
certainly was my experience. I was an
unchurched, unbelieving college stu-
dent when I came to God at the age of
twenty-one. I did not even know the
difference between the Old and New
Testaments; in fact, I was hardly aware
that there were two sections within the
Bible. After I was saved, I went back
to campus not really understanding
what had happened to me. Although
I was unfamiliar with religious
terminology—I did not know what
being “saved” or “born again” was all
about—there was a difference in me.
I had been transformed without ever
having been taught what real salvation
would do in a person’s life.
Salvation crosses denominational
boundaries. Christianity is about more
than theology; it is about practicality.
There is power in the Blood of Jesus
to remove sin! Sometimes people try
to patch up their lives and do better in
their own strength. Some even think
that before they can come to God, they
need to clean themselves up a bit. That
may help for the moment, but the best
cleansing job we can do to our own
hearts will not eradicate sin. We need
Jesus! He makes a change that will be
undeniable.
When I went back to college after
my conversion, I said nothing to my
roommate about what had happened
to me. I would not have known what
to say anyway. The following Friday
night, my friends came over with the
intention of going out and doing what
we always did on Friday evenings—
activities we claimed were a good
time even though they really were
not. Although my friends urged me,
“Let’s go!” my response was, “I am not
going to do that anymore.” They went
without me and I was glad to see them
leave. While I could not explain the
difference salvation had made, I knew
I had no interest anymore in doing
what we had always done.
The next morning, I felt a need to
attend church. I did not know where
to go so I looked in the yellow pages
of the Corvallis, Oregon, phone
book and picked the first church that
had the name “Christian” in it. I put
on my best clothes. Though I did not
own a suit or tie, I must have looked
better-dressed than usual because
when I emerged from my room, my
roommate asked, “Where are you
going?” I answered, “I’m going to
church,” and headed out the door
before he could ask more questions.
I would have preferred to escape
notice, but salvation makes a differ-
ence that is obvious.
That is what happened in the lives
of those individuals who turned to
God in Antioch—they were changed!
And as a result of that change, they
began to be identified by others as
Christians. What is striking—and the
Scriptural record bears this out—is
that it was not the new believers who
called themselves “Christians.” It was
those outside the faith who labeled
these new believers as followers of
Christ. They took knowledge of them,
as they had done with Peter and John
earlier (see Acts 4:13), observing that
these new believers had been with
Christ. He had changed their lives.
Not all the individuals who identi-
fied themselves as Christians in Bible
times were Christians. We see that in
the case of Ananias and Sapphira. If
you had asked that husband and wife,
“What faith do you identify with?” they
would have responded, “We identify
with Peter and John and the followers

of Christ.” Although the name
“Christian” had not been given yet,
they self-identified as Christians. How-
ever, they were not Christians, they
were liars! They had not experienced
the change of heart the Lord offered, so
they brought part of the money from
the sale of some property and laid it at
the apostles’ feet, deceitfully implying
it was the full price—in spite of the fact
that there was no requirement that the
full amount be given. The Holy Spirit
revealed their dishonesty and they paid
with their lives.
Simon the sorcerer, whose story is
told in Acts chapter 8, was another
who claimed to be a follower of Jesus.
He even had been water baptized.
If you had asked him, “Simon, how
do you identify yourself?” he would
have said he was a Christian, but his
actions proved differently. How we
identify ourselves does not change
what we are. If we are sinners, falsely
calling ourselves Christians will not
make it a fact.
When I was in the fourth grade,
each student in our Roseburg, Oregon,
grade school was given a card to fill
out. On that card, we were asked to
indicate our religion, and one of the
options was “Christian.” Though I was
not sure how to respond, I checked the
Christian box. Later, I asked my mother
what box I should have marked. She
said, “You checked the right one,” but,
in fact, I was not a Christian. I was a
sinner, but that designation was not
offered as an option.
You are either saved or you are not
saved. If you are still sinning, you
are in an unsaved condition. Scrip-
ture tells us that all are born in sin.
In Psalm 51:5 we read, “Behold, I was
shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my
mother conceive me.” Even though
you were adorable at birth, you pos-
sessed a carnal nature. That carnality
later led you to commit sins that need
to be confessed and forgiven.
Forgiveness and justification, and
subsequently the experience of sancti-
fication, are what God’s plan of salva-
tion offers. These are real experiences
that will change your life. In fact, they
will change you in such a way that you
will not need to identify yourself as a
Christian in order for others to know
it. Those who know you soon will rec-
ognize that something has happened!
That is the power of God unto salva-
tion. Nobody will have to tell you that
you cannot do certain things anymore.
You will find those old sinful behaviors
and habits so disgusting and deplor-
able that you will have no desire to go
back to them.
We cannot break the bonds of Satan
in our own power, but deliverance and
victory comes through the saving power
of Jesus Christ. Jesus makes the differ-
ence . . . and others will see and know!

od is the Rock of my salvation, and He has shown
Himself strong on my behalf for many years. Jesus
found me in July of 1958 when I was five years old. I
was not looking for Him, but He was looking for me.
My parents were not Christians at the time, but a minister
from the Apostolic Faith Church came to visit in our home
in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He lived the Gospel and
had a holy boldness to ask if he could pray while he was
there. Through that, God sent His Spirit to speak to my
young heart.
Shortly after that minister’s visit, our family left for a fish-
ing trip. Instead of going to the lake, however, we ended up
at an Apostolic Faith Church over one hundred miles from
our home. That night after the service, my parents went
forward to pray, and I went with them. I do not remember
what I prayed, but the Lord saved me, and I felt the change
in my heart. God saved my parents also, and that gave me
the privilege to be raised in the Gospel from then on.

As a child, I watched as the Lord did many wonderful
things in our home. Once when I had a skin disease, the
doctors could find no cure. The problem grew worse, but
when God’s people gathered and prayed for me, the Lord
came down in our living room and healed me.
Throughout my childhood, God grew more precious to
me. He placed a love for the truth in my heart and gave
me strength and courage to dare to be different and to live
my testimony. He never failed me, but in my senior year
of high school my commitment needed to be renewed.
Midway through that year, God helped me admit my need.
On January 31, 1971, I yielded everything to the call of the
Spirit, and the Blood of Jesus washed over my soul. The joy
of restoration flooded my heart.
After graduating from high school, the Lord contin-

took me. After the appointment, we went to lunch. Fort
McMurray does not get a lot of rain, but when we finished
eating, we noticed the sky was getting dark. We thought
clouds were rolling in. However, when we drove into the
cloud, we realized it was smoke, and then we saw flames
nearby that were going hundreds of feet into the air.
When we arrived at our house, my husband said, “You
had better start packing up some things,” so I boxed up
some of the church files. Being a woman, I started to clean
out a pot of rice on the stove. My husband said, “You don’t
have time!” and I heard the urgency in his voice. He took
me to a window and said, “Look out there. We’ve got to
go! Just grab some clothes.” He went to the garage and got
some of our old photo albums. As we left, I stood by the
step into our entryway and said twice, “Jesus, I don’t want
to lose everything.” Outside the door as I pushed the lock, I
said, “But You are my Peace.”
By the time we got into our truck, the houses behind ours
were on fire, and the roads were total gridlock. Everywhere
there were vehicles and people trying to get out of the
burning neighborhood. It was a beautiful area with trees
down the side of the highway, but they were all on fire. In
all the chaos, someone courteously let us out of our drive-
way. There was a greenway in front of our house, and my
husband drove through it to get out.
When we arrived at the traffic light to enter Highway 63,
the only way out of the city, everything was blocked. Sud-
denly, a transformer blew up to the left of us. The policeman
who was directing traffic probably wondered if he would be
alive in the next minutes. In that moment of time, he was
distracted, and I said, “Edwin, go, go!” and we were able
to get onto the highway. Two hotels were totally engulfed
in flames, we could hear explosions, and black smoke was
billowing all around. In every direction there was fire, grid-
lock, and fear on people’s faces. Some were fleeing by foot.
We prayed, “God, get us out alive!”
The Lord was our Deliverer. He miraculously protected
us and our church people. Over 89,000 people escaped
from the Fort McMurray area, and there were no deaths
related to the fire. The church building that we had been
renting was not burned. The church parsonage, which
was our home, was burned to the ground, but God got us

God is everything! He meets our every need, and I give
Him all the praise.
Update by Marjorie Reid before publication: Early in June,
Fort McMurray residents began to return home in stages.
Business owners and those who lived in areas not heavily
damaged were among the first who were allowed to return.
Residents were encouraged to come and get some personal
belongings and leave again until the city could return to
some kind of normal. Those from heavily damaged areas
were permitted to view their property after clearing the
security check points.
Entering the city the first time after the fire was emotional.
There were many “Welcome Home Fort McMurray” signs
placed along Highway 63. Fire Fighters and first respond-
ers waved flags and shouted “Welcome home!” Truly it
was a day of mixed emotions. It was good to be home, but
being surrounded by the devastation of our neighborhood
brought a real moment of truth—some things in our lives
had drastically changed.
In the midst of all that, it felt somewhat consoling just to
stand where our home had been. We had many emotions as
we looked over the property and felt both comfort and loss.

Little by little, our city is being renewed. The water
supply has been restored to most of the city. The hospital is
reopened. Business services are reduced but available. The
city recently announced they are bringing in temporary
housing for those who lost their homes and have not found
a place to live. Edwin and I found a place to rent and are
partly moved in. Recent statistics showed that 61,000 are in
the city now. We recently received the permit to begin the
cleanup of the church property on Beacon Hill Drive where
the parsonage was located.
The church where we worship was totally safe with noth-
ing lost. We are all happy to be home to worship together,
and it is our prayer we will see revival.

Site analysis. My husband and I
learned that a custom home plan starts
with an analysis of the building site to
evaluate opportunities and problems
that will impact the design of the
house. Does the lot slope allow for a
daylight basement? Is there a view in
one direction that could be maximized
by the position of the house? How will
the required setbacks affect the size of
the footprint? Those issues all are fac-
tored in when the plan is drawn. Simi-
larly, God knew every detail about the
environment where you and I would
live and grow, and His plan for us kept
those in mind. His design for each
of our lives is unique, and perfectly
shaped to our individual abilities, per-
sonalities, and life circumstances.
Building codes. The City of Port-
land has many requirements for how
residential buildings must be con-
structed. Their stated purpose is “to
provide standards for the protection
of life, limb, property, and environ-
ment, and for the safety and welfare of
the consumer, general public, and the
owners and occupants of residential
buildings.” My husband and I found
that building codes have significant
implications for a project. If they are
disregarded, when the inspector walks
through with his clipboard, he will “red
tag” problems that need attention. The
building will not pass inspection until
those problems are rectified and every
aspect meets code requirements.
God also gives instructions for us
as we build our lives. His “building
codes” are spelled out in the Bible,
and they are designed for our ultimate
safety and welfare. Those guidelines
must be followed if we are to pass His
final inspection at the end of our lives.
A good foundation. We learned
that a good foundation—the element
of an architectural structure which
connects it to the ground—is critical.
In addition to resisting the movement
of the earth around it, the foundation
also insulates the structure against
moisture and cold. Our spiritual struc-
tures must be securely attached to
Christ; we read in 1 Corinthians 3:11,
“For other foundation can no man lay
than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

the basis of our lives. We do not want

ity for our lives and keep us steady
when everything around us seems to
be shifting, and will protect us from
natural forces that could have a nega-
tive impact.
Product choices. As the framing
phase began, my husband and I went
through several months when we
were continually making decisions. In
fact, we probably made more choices
during that period than at any other
time in our prior forty years of mar-
ried life! There were questions regard-
ing roofing and flooring options,
plumbing and lighting fixtures, inte-
rior and exterior finishes, and heat-
ing and cooling units. We discussed
whether the kitchen cabinets should
have glass or solid doors, and how we
wanted the attic area finished. The list
went on and on! Generally, our prod-
uct selections were made on the basis
of cost, operability, maintenance, and
life expectancy. We knew these choices
were not insignificant details; each one
contributed to the quality of the end
product, so we considered all of them
carefully.
In our spiritual building project as
well, day-to-day choices will impact
the quality of the final product. Will
we discipline ourselves to choose our
words carefully so they align with
God’s instructions for how His fol-
lowers should speak? Will we focus
on what God tells us to focus on, and
treat others with love, mercy, and
kindness? Choices like these will deter-
mine whether we receive God’s ulti-
mate stamp of approval, “Well done,
thou good and faithful servant.”
In construction, there is a continu-
ous exploration of options for the
building’s components as new or dif-
ferent requirements, constraints, and
information is presented. Our Chris-
tian lives are not static either; situa-
tions, resources, and circumstances
change. God expects us to grow and
mature as Christians. Are we continu-
ally learning and applying what we
have learned to our spiritual building
project?
Price considerations. Like most
home builders, my husband and I had
to work within a budget, so the price of
products was always a consideration.
We elected to upgrade and enhance
parts of the house that were important
to us and economized on items that
were not. In our spiritual building,
we must carefully evaluate the “cost”
of our choices. Some decisions may
seem desirable at the moment, but will
they truly serve us well spiritually? Are
they durable, or will they shortly need
adjustment and “repair”? Will we be
happy with the choices we made when
we come to the end of life?
As it turned out, our appointment
with our contractor and the designer
of our current home ended up being
focused entirely on the upcoming
ADU project, and the creator of our
house plan never did walk through
our home to observe the choices we
made. The fact is, his opinion regard-
ing the details of our home really does
not matter. When he handed over the
blueprints to us five years ago, his job
was done. However, God’s interest in
us is never-ending, and His evaluation
at the end of our lives will matter! As
we look ahead to that day, we want
to keep in mind that God is not only
aware of the day-to-day choices we
make, but He has a personal and deep
concern about every detail that will
affect our eternal outcome. Let’s do
our best to make sure He is pleased at
that great final inspection!

An instantaneous work is done in our hearts and, as it per-
tains to our study today, to our minds. We are changed!
Since the word “regenerate” means to be reborn spiritu-
ally, the word “unregenerate” refers to the state of sin with
which all are born. Ephesians 2:2-3 describes the behavior
of unregenerate individuals—how they are prone to act,
talk, and think. We read, “Wherein in time past ye walked
according to the course of this world, according to the
prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh
in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all
had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were
by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” This is
how we behaved before we came to Christ.
In an unregenerate condition, we have a sinful, worldly
mind which naturally goes against God and His law.
Romans 8:7 alludes to that, asserting, “The carnal mind is
enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God,
neither indeed can be.” Enmity means “hostility.” There is
opposition to God and holy living; there is resistance to
God’s plan for purifying the soul and mind. This enmity is
universal in all unsaved people. Whether the opposition to
God is direct or indirect, hidden or apparent, it is there. It
cannot be changed except through God’s plan of salvation.
The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:6 that “to be car-
nally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life
and peace.” In Titus 1:15, he further explained the contrast
between the spiritual and carnal mind: “Unto the pure all
things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbe-
lieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience
is defiled.” What a vast difference exists between the two!
How Satan battles for the mind
The mind is the battleground where Satan wages
war against the spiritual man. Our opening text was the
admonition, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in

Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). Satan does not want us to
possess the mind of Christ—minds with the thoughts,
the focus, and the goals of Jesus. Satan will do his best to
invade and control our minds, and he employs a variety of
strategies to do so.
He attacks us through our senses. Satan will be quick to
place images before us that are designed to appeal to our
senses. He will parade before us the material “benefits” of
this world, tempting us to look at, focus on, or listen to
things that would draw us away from God.
He attacks us through our God-given desires. God cre-
ated the human family with certain natural appetites and
desires that were put in us to serve a purpose. However,
Satan would like to entice us to allow these to run rampant.
Even a cursory look at today’s society reveals the results
of the fallen nature: appetites and desires have been com-
pletely unrestrained in many cases.
He attacks us through circumstances in our lives. At times
each of us will face events that leave us feeling vulnera-
ble and weak. In those times, Satan is right there to bring
thoughts such as, Why would a loving God allow this to
happen? Does God really care? Did He really give you that
promise of deliverance? Satan’s questions are designed to
make us doubt God.
It is up to us to decide who will control our minds. There
are really only two choices: either God’s Spirit will be in
control, or Satan will be. Which will it be?
Winning the battle for our minds
through a right focus
In Philippians 4:8, the Apostle Paul gave an important
instruction that will help us win the battle for our minds.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever
things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever
things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever
things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if
there be any praise, think on these things.” These six adjec-
tives (true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report)
are standards of excellence for the regenerated mind. They
are extremely pertinent to us today in our society where
moral filth is so prevalent.
The first phrase, “whatsoever things are true” speaks of
eternal truth—that which is unchangeable, rooted in real-
ity. It also has reference to the Word of God. Psalm 51:6
says, “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts.”
Only things that are rooted in truth are pleasing to God
and in accord with His nature.
The next phrase points us to “whatsoever things are
honest.” Honest alludes to that which is honorable, decent,
and worthy of respect in the sight of man.
Paul continues with, “. . . whatsoever things are just.” The
word just speaks to personal integrity and righteous rela-
tionships with others. Proverbs 20:7 says, “The just man
walketh in his integrity.” We could also say that the just
man thinks with integrity.
The Apostle goes on, pointing next to “whatsoever things
are pure.” We are to dwell upon things that are wholesome,
clean, and without guile.
 Proverbs 4:23 instructs, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of
it are the issues of life.” A big part of keeping our hearts is
monitoring carefully what comes into our minds.
These first four adjectives pertain to moral excellence,
but when they are exhibited in our lives, they result in the
last two adjectives: “lovely” and “of good report.” The out-
ward evidence of inward moral excellence will be reputa-
ble, praiseworthy, or commendable because what is in our
minds at some point will be reflected in our words and
behavior. The Apostle Paul said, “think on these things.”
We are to meditate upon them, to esteem them highly, and
above all, to model them in our lives to the glory of God.
Winning the battle for our minds
through staying on guard
Along with thinking the right thoughts, another way
we can win the battle of the mind is to carefully guard
what comes into our minds. The key endeavor of a holy
Christian is to love God with all his heart, soul, mind, and
strength. As individuals who have set apart and devoted
ourselves to God, we want to carefully guard against any-
thing that would contaminate our thoughts or distract us
from our primary purpose of glorifying and serving God.

gence; for out of it are the issues of life.” A big part of keep-
ing our hearts is monitoring carefully what comes into our
minds, making sure that what we allow into our minds is
consistent with God’s will. We must not let the ungodly
ideas, perceptions, and values of the world take root in our
minds and influence our actions.
As I considered the importance of guarding our minds,
I was reminded of an incident that occurred a few years
ago when I was pastoring in Yakima, Washington. We had
a church work day one Saturday, and after cleaning out all
the flower beds, we threw the old bark dust into the dump-
ster. A few days later, I received a call from the garbage
company. They informed me that they could not pick up
our garbage because it contained bark dust, which might
scratch the inside of their garbage truck. I was told that I
had to remove all the bark dust from the dumpster and put
it in plastic bags, and then it would be suitably prepared to
go into the garbage truck.
My wife and I were leaving the next day to attend special
meetings at another of our churches, so I put the problem
on hold. Upon our return, I went out behind the garage
and opened the dumpster to remove the bark dust. What I
noticed first was the smell; it was awful! I couldn’t even see
the bark dust because a pile of garbage had been thrown
on top of it—kitchen garbage, soured milk containers, left-
over food scraps, cigarette butts, and discarded clothing.
I spread out a big tarp and began to shovel garbage.
Before long there was a little crowd of observers as the
neighbors tried to figure out what the pastor was doing
pulling trash out of the dumpster. As I shoveled a little
further, I found something that disturbed me. There were
little pieces of Scripture torn from a Bible study mixed in
here and there. It kind of hit home. The human mind can
become a garbage dump if we do not guard what goes into
it. The results will be unpleasant—even if there is a little
Scripture mixed in.
The Lord, speaking through the Prophet Ezekiel, told
Israel, “I know the things that come into your mind, every
one of them” (Ezekiel 11:5). Even if we do not verbalize or
act upon our thoughts, God knows what is in our minds.
Thoughts are real! Though they cannot be seen, weighed,
or measured, they are powerful—and God sees them all.
That fact alone should help us understand the importance
of guarding our minds.
When an unkind or impure thought comes, we must dis-
miss it instantly. Cry out, “Lord, help me! I don’t want that
thought. Purify my mind with Your Spirit and Your Word.”
If we allow the seed of an ungodly thought to remain, it
will take root and grow.
The best defense
One of the best ways to guard against harmful thoughts
is to fill our minds with Scripture. Take time to study and
memorize the Word of God. Colossians 3:16 encourages,
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly [or abun-
dantly]…” Let it inhabit you. Let it live and breathe in you.
Fill your mind with the books and themes of Scripture, not
just fragments here and there.
Romans 12:2 challenges us: “And be not conformed to
this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing [ren-
ovation] of your mind.” In other words, let your life be
changed by letting God renovate your mind through the
Holy Spirit. A similar thought is expressed in Ephesians
4:22-24, “Put off concerning the former conversation
[manner of living] the old man, which is corrupt accord-
ing to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of
your mind; and that ye put on the new man which after
God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” When
we put on the new man which is created in righteousness
and true holiness, our regenerated minds will be aligned
with the mind of Christ, and the actions and words that
flow from them will be pleasing to Him.
What is the condition of your mind today? Does it need
regeneration? Does it need renewing? God offers a solu-
tion. Go before Him and ask, “Lord, make me holy. Purify
my heart and mind. Cleanse my thoughts. Take out any-
thing ungodly or displeasing to You, and give me peace.”
If we pray an honest prayer for pure and holy minds, God
will not disappoint us.

 EVIDENCE
THIS IS MY FIRST time to be at this
blessed Portland camp meeting. I
never dreamed I would be here. It is
indeed a miracle.
The Lord has been so good to bring
me out of a wilderness of sin. I was
invited by my uncle to an Apostolic
Faith meeting in Nigeria. There, I was
advised to pray for the salvation of my
soul. The Lord humbled my stubborn
heart, and in 1977, I prayed through to
my three Christian experiences—sal-
vation, sanctification, and the baptism
of the Holy Ghost.
I had been brought up in a polyga-
mous home, and my parents perse-
cuted me at first. However, in time, the
Lord brought them into the Gospel,
too. They are now in Heaven with our
Lord Jesus Christ, where I know their
joy has no bounds.
God has been my all in all. He
helped me straighten out my crooked
ways through making restitutions. He
also made it possible for me to attend
a university, and helped me graduate
with honors. He gave me a beautiful
Christian wife, and blessed us with
three children who fear God and are in
this Gospel. By His grace, He provided
work for me at the Embassy of Nigeria
in Libreville, Gabon, as a translator.
As God has been faithful to me, I
want to be faithful to Him. Pray for us
concerning the Gospel work in Gabon.
By God’s grace, it has progressed and
is now extended to Equatorial Guinea.
I love the Lord, and my goal is to
make Heaven my eternal home at
the end of this earthly race. — John

THE LORD PIERCED the darkness in
my life and set me free from the vices
of the world and from condemnation.
I was a juvenile delinquent the summer
I was saved. By the next year, I was on
the honor roll at school. During that
year, my father was in prison and my
mother was working to provide for

our family, so it was only the Lord
who made that possible. He put the
incentive in my heart to apply myself.
Before, I had been lazy, but when God
saved me, He did something in my
heart that motivated me to do right, to
put my hand to the plow and not look
back.
God also delivered me from a very
strong false religion. My mother was
the third generation in her family to
be raised in it, and she was devout.
I was baptized and raised in it also.
The main doctrine was that a person
is saved by works, not by grace. This
was forty-five years ago, and that
group did not let go of people easily.
Workers visited me quite often until
I married.
I lived the Christian life before my
mother. I loved her, prayed for her,
and when I was seventeen, cared for
her when she was ill. As she grew older,
near eighty, I began to pray, “Lord, help
her. Her time is running out.” The last
few months of her life, she was on hos-
pice. I noticed that she was disturbed
about being ready for Heaven, and she
confessed to me that she had not done
enough works. I knew the Lord was
being faithful to her.
I asked my mother if I could read
to her from the Bible, just the words
in red [spoken by Jesus], not what my
pastor said or what her organization’s
founder said, but just what Jesus said.
She agreed to that. There is a lot of
Gospel in the Lord’s words.
A few days before she passed away,
Mom asked me to pray for her. That
opened the way for me to share my
testimony with her for the first time.
I was never allowed to testify to my
mother before that day. She listened
and then I held her hand while we
prayed for a while. The next morn-
ing when I came to see her, she said,
“Kiss your mother goodbye. I’ve made
my peace with God. I’m ready to go.”
She was eighty-three years old, so hold
on! Hold on in faith for those you love.

MY WIFE AND FAMILY and I thank
the Lord for the privilege to be at
camp meeting. It has been a blessing.
Our hearts have been touched by the
fellowship, and we are enjoying it to
the fullest. The wonderful music has
been a blessing as well.
When I was just a child, I gave my
heart to the Lord, but as a teenager, I
let the love of God slip out of my life.
After high school, I moved to Toronto,
Ontario, and thought, This is great; I
am on my own now. However, God
was there, too.
One day I found myself on a bal-
cony, looking out over the city and
trying to compromise with God. I
said, “I’m not a bad person. I hope
You can accept me,” but I knew in my
heart that I needed salvation. I needed
the Blood of Jesus in order to make
Heaven my home.
A couple of nights later, my brother
came over. He asked, “Are you going
to the club?” I told him no, I had had
enough of that life. I needed something
more, because there was a void in my
heart that needed filling. He went on
his way, and I sat alone in my apart-
ment thinking. Knowing that I was
at a crossroads, I made my way to my
bedroom and fell down on my knees,
crying out to God. He heard me as I
told Him everything that was in my
heart. When I came out of my room, I
felt as light as a feather. The trees and
everything around me looked new.
I thank God for salvation. I love
Him with all my heart, and I want to
serve Him until I see Him. — Darren

BACK IN 1948, God saved my mother
and father, and what a change He
made in that home! The fighting was
gone, the alcohol was gone, and in
their place was love. From then on, the
Bible was an open book in our home,
and my parents made sure we prayed
morning and evening.

These things did not make me a
Christian, but on June 18, 1961, I
prayed at our church in Medford,
Oregon, and God saved me. What a
change He made in my own heart! A
week later, in the same building, He
came down and sanctified me. And
two weeks after that, right here in the
tabernacle, underneath the flag, He
filled me with His Holy Spirit.
Salvation, sanctification, and the
baptism of the Holy Spirit were just
the beginning of my experiences with
God. He kept me while I was in the
United States Army, while I was work-
ing in the shipyards in California, and
when I needed Him the most—when
I lost my wife, son, and daughter in a
car accident. He was there, and He saw
me through that hard time.
God was also with me last year on
July 14 when I was in an accident on
the freeway. I was driving home, pull-
ing a trailer, after two weeks at camp
meeting. Suddenly, the trailer decided
to go in its own direction. At freeway
speed, the truck I was driving slammed
into the concrete railing, first on the
left side and then on the right. Then it
flipped upside-down. Later, the police
officer who came to the scene told me,
“People don’t normally walk away
from something like this.” Once again,
God was there and saw me through.

times in life; I am looking to Jesus who
is there in the good times and in the

GOD SAVED ME after the first week
of camp meeting when I was six years
old. We were pulling into our drive-
way on the second Monday of camp
meeting, and I had a troubled feeling
in my heart. I told my parents, and
they asked if I wanted to pray. I said
yes, and we prayed, and God saved me.
That was some years ago, and God is
still with me.
Prior to this camp meeting, I had
some doubts about my sanctification.
I received it when I was eight years
old, and because I was so young, I
started thinking that maybe I didn’t
really get it. I prayed and prayed about
this, asking God to please show me
that I had received that experience.
Then a calm feeling came to me. God
assured me that I had been sanctified,
and I am thankful for that. Also, I have
a hunger for reading the Bible, pray-
ing, and for the baptism of the Holy
Ghost.
God helped me through middle
school, though I didn’t know how I
would do it. It was a new campus and
new classes, but God helped me. I start
high school this year, and know I have

My family came into contact with the
Apostolic Faith Church in 1973 as a
result of my father’s ill health. In 1975,
I had a sad experience with evil, and
with my mother’s encouragement to
pray and get saved, that sent me to my
knees. I prayed earnestly in my room,

even fasting because I was so desper-
ate, and God came down and saved me
by His grace. The fears and nightmares
I had been having disappeared, and
joy filled my heart.
Although I was careless with my
salvation, when I went humbly back
to God in sincerity, He forgave me.
I pressed forward for sanctification,
making the necessary restitutions, and
God sanctified me. Then I pressed on
for the baptism of the Holy Ghost and
received it also.
I have learned my lesson about being
careless, and guard these Christian
experiences jealously. I am determined
not to let go of them for anything. This
has not always been easy, but I thank
my faithful, loving, and merciful Jesus
for keeping me.
I never expected to go back to
school after my secondary educa-
tion, but God made it possible. At His
appointed time, He gave me a schol-
arship and admission into a univer-
sity. That same year, He healed me of
a stroke. He has seen me through my
education at every level.
God has been everything to me. I
give the balance of my life to Him, and
want to see Him face to face some day.

Today’s Youth
Learn a lesson from
three Hebrew men
who refused to bow.

ho? What? When? Where?
Why? And how? These are
six questions considered
foundational to good journalism.
Let’s consider how these “Five Ws and
One H” relate to Galatians 5:1, “Stand
fast therefore in the liberty where-
with Christ hath made us free, and be
not entangled again with the yoke of
bondage.”
Who?
First is the Who? And that would be
you! Galatians 5:1 was written to you
and for you.
I’ve noticed that a lot of young
people walk around our church camp-
ground in packs: two-pack, three-
pack, four-pack, sometimes I even see
a twelve-pack! And that’s good if you
are encouraging one another to stay
with the Lord.
There was a notable three-pack
in the Bible who encouraged each
another to stand. Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abednego were three Hebrew

young men who had been taken cap-
tive to a land of idol worshipers, and
they decided to stand together—from
the very beginning, no matter the heat.
What?
For these three Hebrews “standing
fast” literally meant standing. King
Nebuchadnezzar had said “at the
sound of all of the instruments, I want
you to bow down.” But they believed
in the one true God who had com-
manded them not to bow down to
idols (see Exodus 20:3-5). So instead
of bowing, they stood up!
Somebody out there was snitching.
They said, “I see three guys over there
who are not bowing down. Go tell the
king we have some people who are
not obeying.” The king decided to give
them one more chance and went over
the rules with them again: When you
hear the music, then you bow down.
That is how this is supposed to work.
But our three Hebrew friends looked
at the king and said, “We are not even

careful to answer you in this. We will
not do it. We will not bow down. Even
if our God does not deliver us, we will
still stand!”
We need to adopt the same attitude
toward sin. “Standing fast in the lib-
erty” means that we are to continue
to walk in the freedom from sin that
Christ has provided for us. We must
refuse to be “entangled” with the “yoke
of bondage” of the sinful habits which
used to control us and were displeas-
ing to God. And if questioned, we
should not hesitate to answer. We must
be determined not to go back into sin
no matter what consequences we may
face for taking that stand.
When?
When I think of those three
Hebrews, I think, What a terrific time
to stand for the Lord! That era was
notable for heathen worship. Those
three young men were confronted by a
king in an environment that was com-
pletely inundated with idols. But they
had made up their minds. They knew
the God they served.
We are also living in a time when
our culture is inundated with idols—
not necessarily of gold or silver, but
idols nonetheless. People worship
money, fame, and pleasure. For many,
self has become their idol. And this
is the time, if there ever was a time,
that we have to be able to stand. This
is not the time to be wishy-washy or
straddling the fence. The world needs
to know that we are authentic. The
world needs to know that we mean
what we say and we say what we mean
when we call ourselves Christians. You
don’t ever want someone to point at
you and say, “I thought you were a
Christian.” Like our three Hebrews,
we want to have our minds made up.
We want to know the God we serve.
The Lord would have us stand fast
in the liberty wherewith Christ hath
made us free…today!
Where?
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
were not in a place they wanted to be.
They had been taken captive from
their homeland and were living in a
country that was new and strange to
them. They had nothing to do with
where they were, but they realized
that God was with them. And if God
is with you, you are in the right place.
Wherever we may be standing
physically, we need to be sure that
spiritually we are standing “in the lib-
erty.” Nowhere else. We must be sure
that we have been saved from our
sins and determine never to go back
to that bondage. We must stand fast
in the liberty of the salvation Jesus
Christ provides.
Why?
Standing fast is ultimately a matter
of life and death. The immediate
future may be unknown, but if we do
not stand, our eternal destination is
known… and it is not good! We must
remember that if we are saved today,
we are free, and God did that! Christ
gave His life for our freedom. We don’t
want Jesus’ sacrifice to be in vain. We
need to be young people who will say
to the world, “We will not bow! God
means too much to us. We love Him
too much to allow our souls to be lost.”
How?
Galatians 5:1 indicates that diligence
and commitment will be required to
maintain our freedom, saying that we
must “stand fast” so that we will not
be “entangled again with the yoke of
bondage.” Ephesians chapter 6 tells
us how, encouraging us to “be strong
in the Lord, and in the power of his
might” and “put on the whole armour
of God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil” (verses 10
and 11). The writer then lists a number
of pieces of that armour, including:
loins girt about with truth, the breast-
plate of righteousness, feet shod with
the preparation of the gospel of peace,
the shield of faith, the helmet of salva-
tion, and the sword of the Spirit.
We need those weapons! In the day
that we are living in, you need your
sanctification. You need the baptism
of the Holy Ghost. You need to be pre-
pared for the battle before it comes.
These three Hebrews were prepared.
They had proven God before their idol
worship challenge. They had deter-
mined ahead of time that they would
stand for God, no matter what. And
when it came time for them to “face
the music” for the choice they had
made, they were not alone.
You see, the punishment for not
bowing to the idol was death by a fiery
furnace. And when the three Hebrews
refused the second chance that King
Nebuchadnezzar offered, he was so
angry he ordered the furnace to be
heated seven times hotter than its
usual temperature. In fact it was so hot
that the men who threw our friends
into the fire died in the process. But
the heat of the fire only brought the
three Hebrews liberty; the very ropes
that they were bound with burned up
and the three walked around victori-
ously in the flames! And then the king
started counting: one, two, three…
four. Four, two, three, one. Three, two,
four, one. Any way he counted there
were four—and he recognized the
fourth as the Son of God!
Our three-pack had become a four-
pack, and that’s important for us to
remember. When you take a stand
for God, you don’t stand alone. It will
always be at least a two-pack because
the Son of God will show up every
time. Oh, how great it is to know
that! The assurance of Jesus’ presence
destroys fear. God can help you to be a
young person who will say, “I will not
be afraid. I will stand.”
Well?
So, we have looked at the who, what,
when, where, why, and how ques-
tions. Perhaps one additional should
be: Well? If you had been there when
King Nebuchadnezzar demanded that
everyone bow to his idol, would you
have stood the test?
With diligence and commitment,
armed with the weapons God pro-
vides, and backed by His presence and
power, you too can stand fast without
fear, no matter what comes. God loves
you too much to allow you to be inun-
dated with fear. He has called us to
freedom. He has given us the liberty to
stand and show that it is the power of
God that keeps us.

Reach
Out
THE BELL SYSTEM telephone company (later to become
AT&T) came out in 1979 with the advertising slogan,
“Reach out and touch someone.” That slogan resonated
with people’s emotions and was effective.
The Bible tells of a woman who reached out and touched
Jesus. She had been sick for twelve years, and although she
had spent all that she had on physicians, she grew worse.
Then she heard of Jesus. We do not know what she was
told. Maybe she had heard that lepers were cleansed or that
Jesus loved the little children. Whatever she had learned, it
caused her to form a plan in her mind. She said, “If I may
touch but his clothes, I shall be whole” (Mark 5:28). It was
a simple plan, and she executed it. Possibly it took every
ounce of strength and energy she had for her to get to Jesus,
but she persevered. She reached out and touched Him, and
immediately she was healed.
Jesus did not come just to affect people emotionally. He
came to make a difference, to set the captives free and heal
the broken hearted as well as those with physical needs. He
came to make Himself accessible, and He still is accessible
today. In fact, He reaches out to each one of us, but some-
times, like this woman, we must make the effort to reach
out to Him.
When this woman touched Jesus, He stopped the pro-
cession and said, “Who touched my clothes?” The disciples
were surprised at His question. A multitude of people were
thronging Jesus and many were bumping into Him, but they
were not reaching out with a purpose. This woman made a
conscious effort and touched Jesus in faith. He knew that,
and He felt virtue flow out. When the woman fell before
Him, He said, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go
in peace, and be whole of thy plague” (Mark 5:34).
The good news is that people can still touch Jesus. His
Spirit draws people to seek for salvation. He reached out
to me in October of 1978 and called after my heart. At the
close of a service, I made my way down to the old-fashioned
altar of prayer and poured out my heart to the Lord. It was
a simple prayer, nothing eloquent about it, but I reached
out to Jesus. He answered and saved my soul. When we
reach out to Jesus, often we find He is closer than we realize
and is reaching out to us.

We can reach out to Jesus for sanctification and the bap-
tism of the Holy Spirit. We can reach out for healing or
solutions to other problems. It may take some persever-
ance as it did for this woman, but the Lord will honor our
determination.
Perhaps you have situations or challenges in your life
that seem impossible. God takes great delight in making
the impossible possible. He is so able. Maybe you have tried
everything you can think of. Reach out to Jesus! You can
touch Him, and He will answer your prayer. — Tim Mixer
Holding
On
THE FIRST TIME I tried water skiing, I learned a lesson
about holding fast. The people who were instructing me
helped me get into the water and threw me the handle of
the water ski rope. They said just to balance in the water,
hold onto the rope, and when the rope began to get tight,
to yell, “Hit it!” That was the command to give the boat full
throttle. I did what they said and when the boat accelerated,
the rope popped out of my hand. I felt a bit foolish but
understood more what they meant by holding on.
The next time when I said, “Hit it!” I held on very tightly
and was up and water skiing for about a second and a half.
Then I went from being up to being dragged through the
water, but I was holding on. Water was going into my eyes
and into my mouth, until finally I thought it might be good
to let go, so I did. As the boat came back around, my friends
asked me, “Why didn’t you let go?” I replied, “You said to
hang on.”
There is a time to hang on and a time to let go, but when
we are hanging on, it is important to have something
worthy of holding to. The Gospel gives us that. We can hold
on to the truths of God’s Word, and they will not take us
down. Revelation 3:11 says, “Behold I come quickly: hold
that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”
In the world today, many pressures try to force the truth
out of our hearts, but we are not going to let it go. We will
not let anyone coax it from us. Heaven awaits those who are
saved, and we want to keep our eyes on that goal. We need
a good grip on that hope.
Jesus Christ is going to return to rapture those who are
looking for Him. It could take place at any second. The

Bible says it will happen in a moment. Some may scoff and
say, “When is it going to happen?” However, God fulfills His
promises, and we want to be ready. We want to hold fast
what He has put into our hearts.
When God saves us and puts His salvation deep into
our hearts, it is worth hanging on to. The truths revealed
in the Bible are worth hanging on to. God will establish,
strengthen, and settle us if we hang on to what He has given

Zoom
In
WE ARE FAMILIAR with the zoom feature on cameras or
smart phones. To zoom in is to look closer. To zoom out is
to obtain a wider view. Sometimes we may need to zoom in
when we look at God’s Word.
The first chapter of the Gospel of John records John the
Baptist declaring, “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36).
If we zoom in on chapter 5, we see the city of Jerusalem
during a feast. No doubt it was a time of joy and restoration
as people gathered expecting something from God. That is
something like camp meeting—we gather to fellowship, we
gather for a joyous time in the Lord, we gather to worship.
However, an even closer look shows a pool called
Bethesda. At the pool’s edge was “a great multitude of
impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered” (John 5:3). In the
midst of all the celebration, the worship, and the joy, there
were people who were suffering. These sick people had
gathered at the pool because from time to time an angel
troubled the water, and the first person into the pool after
that happened was healed. At this moment, if we zoom in
on our society, we will notice there are people today who
are “lame” or “sick” with a sin condition. They need help
for they are unable to deliver themselves.
Continuing in John 5, we learn of one man who had been
infirm for thirty-eight years. He knew he was sick, but he
was unable to obtain healing. Today, often people who are
in sin do not realize how powerless they are to help them-
selves. Sin keeps a person from finding the greater purpose
that can only be found in God.
If we look closer yet, we see Jesus, and He asked a simple
question, “Wilt thou be made whole?” The man answered,
“Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me
into the pool” (John 5:7). He wanted to be healed but he
needed help. Jesus said, “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk”
(John 5:8). The man believed Jesus. How do we know? He
got up and picked up his bed!
Whatever our needs, we must not stop looking until we
find Jesus. He is the answer. He delivers from sin. He is the
solution and our hope and joy. When He comes, the things
that hindered us will not be able to hinder us anymore.

The
Remedy
WHEN I WAS A SCHOOLBOY, health officials would
come to our village to give the children injections to pro-
tect from malaria or cholera. The immunizations were
compulsory. However, some of us would run away simply
because we were afraid of the needle and the swollen arm
that might follow. The teachers would find us and encour-
age us—well, actually compel us—by letting us know the
importance of taking the injection. In the end, we were
persuaded, and we would stretch out our arms and close
our eyes. We understood it was necessary to take the inocu-
lation because refusal would make us vulnerable to disease.
There is a condition worse than malaria or cholera. All
humankind is born with sin, and the remedy for the prob-
lem is the Blood of Jesus. He said, “For this is my blood of
the new testament, which is shed for many for the remis-
sion of sins” (Matthew 26:28).
There is power in the Blood of Jesus to deliver from sin
and its consequences—guilt, condemnation, sorrow, heart-
ache, and a lost eternity. This remedy is free and readily
available for whosoever will—the rich and the poor, the
old and the young, all repentant sinners, once and for all.
The Spirit of God convicts, encouraging a person to receive
what is offered.
After we schoolboys had been persuaded, we needed to
make ourselves available. The teacher did not take the inoc-
ulation on our behalf. Similarly, when a person has been
persuaded of his need to have the Blood of Jesus remedy
his sin problem, he must make himself available to God. He
must pray and tell the Lord from the bottom of his heart
that he surrenders completely. When he does this, God will
forgive and free his heart from sin.
Have you received the remedy for sin? If not, look to God

SURRENDERED

orn in Ika Oku Iboku, Nigeria, I
grew up attending church regu-
larly. In my teenage years, while
away at school, I attended another
church and took part in the services by
playing the organ and singing in the
choir. None of these things made me a
Christian. My heart was filled with sin,
and remained so.
Like many other young men, I had
great ambitions to excel, and so applied
for and gained admission to a university
in the United States. I also was awarded
scholarships to study in Romania and
later, in Cairo, Egypt. However, God
had other plans for my life, and He
stopped me in my ventures.
In 1973, frustrated at not being able
to leave my country, I moved to Cala-
bar and quit attending church alto-
gether. Then God brought a friend into
my life who invited me to an Apos-
tolic Faith service. My initial purpose
in going was to enjoy the music, but
God had much more in store for me.
I found the beautiful music inspiring
and consoling, and so continued to
attend the church just to hear more of
it. In the services, I also heard about
salvation. My first thought was that
the preacher bewitched people into
receiving it. Eventually, though, I
decided to test it for myself.
On September 14, 1973, God hum-
bled my heart. I prayed, confessing
my sins and promising God not to
do those wrong things anymore. In
answer to my prayer, He saved my
soul. Later, He sanctified me and bap-
tized me with the Holy Ghost.

to God’s Call
His ambitions could not
compare to the plan
God had for him.

At salvation, my life was instantly
changed. God gave me victory over sin,
and a wonderful joy flooded my soul
that is still there today. Also, my ambi-
tions changed; I burned my admission
letter to the U.S. university, telling God
I wanted His will for my life, even if
that meant not studying abroad.
Another change took place. As far
back as anyone could remember, my
village had been plagued by the power
of darkness. Nightmares were a daily
bitter occurrence. When I was awarded
the scholarship to Cairo, I had been
excited, thinking that there I would
procure as many talismans as possible.
I wanted to gather that black magic
and take it back home to destroy the
power of darkness over my village,
while also securing my own safety.
Thankfully, God prevented me from
going to Cairo. After I received salva-
tion, the saints told me that the night-
mares would be gone. I decided to
prove this by returning to my village.
It was true! I slept soundly through the
night without having any nightmares.
From then until now, God has been
my refuge and strength. The greatest
power is in the Blood of Jesus!
While I was still a young man, an
epidemic invaded our family. My
grandfather lost thirteen of his four-
teen children, including my father. My
older brother also died, and there was
fear that I would follow suit. However,
my trust was in God. Through His
power, I am alive today, and am the
beginning of a new generation who do
not die prematurely.
God has continued to provide
healing for me and my family over
the years. One time my two daugh-
ters were afflicted with the measles
so severely that the presence of death
could be felt in the room. Our church
family prayed, claiming God’s prom-
ises, and they were healed.
I had cold symptoms for over
twenty years, and felt that my lungs
were damaged. Chilled water was like
poison to me, and it was difficult to
stay warm. I continued to pray and
trust God, and in 2014, Jesus touched
me. He healed me completely, making
my lungs brand new.
In 1981, God called me to move
from Calabar to Ikot Enwang to take
part in the work at our regional head-
quarters church. I am thankful for my
wife who was supportive and encour-
aging as we relocated. A few years
later, God called me to devote myself
to His service fulltime.
In 1997, there were some challenges,
and I thought God had released me
from that call. However, He gave me
three consecutive warnings to remain
steadfast. With the third, He allowed
affliction to come upon my body.
There were serious pains in my right
ribs. Finally, they became so severe
that I was gasping for each breath and
felt I was at death’s door. In that hour,
I renewed my consecrations to God,
promising to do His will if He would
heal me. That night, a song kept going
through my mind with these words:
“Just obey . . . just obey.” Upon waking,
I was still singing, and was grateful to
find that the pains were gone. God
had healed me! Immediately, I surren-
dered to His call.
God has provided for my every need.
My wife and I were blessed with two
daughters who are happily married in
the Gospel. The journey to Heaven is
not always easy. Trials, afflictions, and
persecutions have come, but Jesus has
always been there to encourage.
It pays to serve God. He has given
me the hope of eternal life, and filled
me with sweet peace, joy, and content-
ment. The best Friend anyone could
have is Jesus.

Over Nine Decades of Blessings
G
od has been so good to me.
Truly I love Him with all my
soul and with all that is within
me. He has healed me so many times.
I wish I could tell it the way I believe
and know it.
I was born in Arkansas in 1910 to
parents who were Christians. When
A pioneer woman there was a problem, they would
tells of pray, and God answered their prayers.
When I was about three years old, I
experiencing contracted rheumatic fever, and it
divine intervention seemed as if I was in bed forever. Mom
had a big family and a lot of work to
many times do, so she just prayed for me as she did
her chores. I would call to my mother
through her life. to pray, and she would say, “Mother
is praying.” Then all of a sudden one
day, I sat up in bed and said, “Take
these old night clothes off me and
dress me.” I got up, and even though
I hadn’t walked for weeks, I ran to
my mother, and she dressed me. That

took place when I was about four years
old—I was instantly healed of malaria.
When I was only five, this Gospel
came our way in the form of an Apos-
tolic Faith paper. I do not know how
the paper got to us, but God saw to it
that we received it, and that meant so
much to us. More papers came, and
we were always glad to get them. With
each new one, we would gather about
mother’s knees and listen to her read
about the church services and testimo-
nies in Portland. We thought the news
was so wonderful! It was like light
from Heaven. Many times as a young
girl I looked toward Portland thinking
it was the brightest spot on earth.
When we were sick, we laid the
church papers on our bodies and
prayed, and God healed us. We praised
God for those papers.
In 1919, we moved to Denver,
Colorado, and set up a homestead.
Then we opened a grocery store. We
continued to receive Apostolic Faith
papers, and Mother would always put
some Gospel literature in the grocery
boxes she packed. There are many
people in Heaven today who received
the light of the Gospel through those
papers in Colorado.
When I was eleven years old, my
family was traveling in Oklahoma, and
our car broke down. My daddy always
looked up church locations in advance

 when we traveled, and he had on
this occasion as well. We went to one
nearby, and I was saved in that little
church. I was so happy, I was sing-
ing the next day, “There’s a new name
written down in glory, and it’s mine.”
Oh, God has been
so good to me down
through the years!
From the time my
mother received that
first Apostolic Faith
paper, she wanted to
move to Portland.
We thought this was
impossible, but in
1925, the Lord made
a way. The Model-T
Ford truck that we
used in the grocery
business provided
the transportation. I

a young man who
worked for my father in the grocery
business, and he did the driving.
We covered the sides of the truck
with canvas and screens, and put a
wall-to-wall bed in the back to sleep
about ten of us. There was very little
pavement between Denver and Port-
land (only through the towns), so
on some days we would travel only

headed right to Sixth and Burnside on
the east side of the Willamette River,
but when we got there, we didn’t see
any church. We inquired at a restau-
rant owned by a man who happened to
attend the Apostolic Faith Church, and
another brother was called to come
meet us. He welcomed us to Portland
and said the church was at Sixth and
Burnside on the west side of the river.

So we received our initial greeting
from Brother Peter and Brother Bob.
Our first church meeting was that very
night, and I testified during it. I can’t
explain the joy that we felt in getting
to the church. We were home at last!
A few weeks later, the annual camp
meeting began. I was invited to stay
nearby at the home of one of the
church ladies. My parents stayed on
the campground, taking a tent in the
500s section. They cooked their meals
in the kitchenette, and I went over
quite often to be with them.
That first camp meeting, my hus-
band prayed through to salvation and
also was healed of appendicitis. He
was water baptized, but because of the
pregnancy, I waited until the follow-
ing year. We rode the streetcar from
Fifty-second and Woodstock out to
the Columbia River, and there we were
baptized—he in 1925 and I in 1926.
Our daughter was born in August
of that first year in Portland, and was
seemingly healthy. However, when she
was three weeks old, we discovered
she had a tumor between her stomach
and lower bowels. As time went on,
she wasn’t expected to live. Her doctor
told us she needed an operation, but
was too small to come through it. He
said, “Your God or an operation, but I
have no faith in either one.”
Sister Florence Crawford, the
founder of our church, was very pre-
cious to us. She prayed all night long.
Then she sent Sister Samuels to us the
next day. When Sister Samuels arrived
and found us at peace, she commented,
“This was supposed to be a crisis?” My
husband responded that he never did
think our daughter was going to die.
To that, Sister Samuels said, “Amen.
Faith is the victory.” Our daughter was
healed of that tumor; it passed out
through her bowels. She had weighed
nine pounds at birth, and at three
months was only seven pounds, but
God instantly healed that baby. She is
a strong healthy seventy-two-year-old
woman today.
In about 1932, after having received
sanctification, I prayed and received
the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Until
then, whenever I prayed, my thoughts
turned to my children and I couldn’t
concentrate on anything else. That
year, a good friend of mine at camp
meeting told me not to think about the
children. She said she would look after
them. That is when I prayed through
and God baptized me.
God has done so many beautiful
things for me and my family that I
could never tell of it all. He has been
our Healer throughout the years. In the
winter of 1936, my husband became
very ill. One morning, he lay in the
jaws of death listening to the church
broadcast over the radio. When the
congregation sang, “Keep holding on,”
God instantly healed him; from that
point forward, he gained strength.
A few years ago, I was so sick that
I couldn’t do anything. God has
restored my health, and now, in my
old age, I am healthier than I was when
I was younger. I have been healed of
so many incurable diseases. I have had
cancer, rheumatic fever, malaria, and
one heart attack after another, but
God has healed me of all of them. I
have never known Him to fail.
Through the years I have had the
privilege of helping with the Sunday
school children, and I spent twenty-
five happy years helping with the
tents and cabins on the campground,
assigning cabins, and supervising the
laundry area. I also sold kerosene, gave
out trailer tags, and distributed keys.
I’ve always loved to help people. My
mother said, “Pauline, you’ll never
get anything in this world,” because I
loved to give, but I never went with-
out. God has always supplied my every
need, and most of my wants. I have
always trusted God for everything.
I praise God that He ever brought
me into this wonderful Gospel. I am so
grateful to Him for what He has done
in my heart and in my life.
Pauline Martin had a giving spirit
and could always be found engaged in
the work of the Lord. In addition to over-
seeing the assignment of cabins during
camp meeting, she ran the supply cabin,
and also a benevolent fund, which pro-
vided clothing to many in need.
As an accomplished seamstress, she
sewed many of the quilts used in the
cabins on the campground, and was
responsible for making the awning over
the patio of the Fellowship Lodge.

from the Azusa Street meetings held in
Los Angeles, California, in 1906. The same
name was used when we began publish-
ing the magazine in Portland in 1909. We
feel it accurately reflects our spiritual roots
and our desire to follow the faith which was
