● Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
● Psychology: pain management, sleep conditioning, cognitive learning, memory function, motivation,
emotions,intellectual ability and how these factors influence our personalities .
● Sociology and Family: culture,social structure, control and deviance, the global view of family, marriage
and divorce.
● Mental Health and Addiction: anxiety, mood disorders like depression, and the nature of lost and grief.
Will explore personality disorders, physical problems with psychological sources, sexual disorders,
dissociative disorders, also eating and sleeping disorders. Also will obtain knowledge of chronic mental
health illnesses like schizophrenia and other psychoses.
● Life Span in Canada: Learning the concepts of nature versus nurture and how each affect prenatal
development. Topics move from infancy to adolescence, through adulthood and to late adulthood.
● Criminology: cost of crime, physical, psychological, economical and social. Identifying populations which
are most at risk in Canadian society as these individuals are the most in need of community service
workers.
● Counselling and Case Management: developing and maintaining a counselling relationship, utilizing active
listening and interviewing skills, and pursuing empathy when dealing with clients. Recognizing those who
may be dangerous, or clients who suffer with mental disorders, substance abuse ,or HIV.
● Written Communication and Reports: In hhouse reports like intake interview reports, daily logs, case
notes, progress notes and incident reports. Being able to write objectively without using jargon,slang, or
cliches.
● Government and Social Services: Exploring various practitioners, practices, regulations and laws regarding
healthcare, both now and as it trends towards the future. Learning the history of Healthcare including the
Canada Health Act and also understanding Federal and Provincial governments' roles in health care
funding.
● Addictions Work: Drugs as a a social problem, toxicity, substance dependence, crime and violence as it
pertains to drug use and the pharmaceutical industry in Canada. Learning to deal with substance and non-
substance addictions including Impulse Control Addictions (kleptomania, pyromania, gambling) and
Behavioural Addictions (food, sexual, pornography, technology, working, exercising and shopping).
Understanding of addictions focusing on stimulants (uppers and downers), depressants, and inhalants.
Topics will cover a wide range of restricted drugs including opoids, hallucinogens and performance
enhancing drugs and learn how psycho therapeutic drugs are used in the treatment of mental illness.
● Crisis Intervention Training: Recognizing signs of escalated behaviour, responding appropriately during
episodes of chaos, promoting client care, welfare, safety and security in crisis situations.
● 160 hours hands on field placement: use skills and knowledge obtained throughout the course in a hands
on real setting as a community service worker.
