EXCERPTS OF THE MINUTES OF FOCUS GROUP DICSCUSSIONS OF SPED,

KINDERGARTEN, AND GRADE 1-2 OF SINAYAWAN CENTRAL SCHOOL, VALENCIA
CITY, BUKIDNON DECEMBER 7, 2018.

CALL TO ORDER

DAISY I. ACUZAR called the meeting to order at 3:30 in the afternoon and
BENES H. DOPITILLO recorded the minutes.
A Quorum of SPED, Kindergarten and Grade 1 to 3 teachers were present
and, the meeting having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with
business.
TOPIC: Reduce Chronic Absenteeism
DATE: December 7, 2018
VENUE: Grade-Aster Classroom

AGENDA: DESCRIPTION/DISCUSSION ACTION

REMARKS

SPEAKER:  IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE: Engage in a one-on-one

DAISY I. ACUZAR discussion with the student in order to identify the
probable cause of his absenteeism. This
information can help to better address these issues.
SPEAKER:  IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE: Educate the pupils
PERLITA R. ESTENZO regarding the importance of attendance, the
adverse effects of absenteeism and school rules
concerning the same.
SPEAKER:  ENGAGING CLASSROOM: Plan for active,
LETECIA E. ORTILANO interactive and engaging class sessions to rule out
boredom and disinterest as causes of
absenteeism. This can be done by incorporating
various active strategies like role playing, debates
or through use of technologies like smart boards,
clickers etc.
SPEAKER:  INVOLVING PARENTS: Parents should be made
BENES H. DOPITILLO aware of the excess number of classes missed by
their child. This can be done by arranging regular
meetings and working with parents to plan out
strategies best suited for their child. For example, in
case of health related issues, the teacher can
arrange for an extra class to help the student with
the missed out classes. Parents should also be
informed of other issues like bullying and poor peer
relations, so as to provide the necessary support
and encouragement.
SPEAKER:  MOTIVATION: Use different reinforcements to
LYDIA U. CAGULADA motivate students to attend classes. Pinning an
attendance sheet on the classroom board is a
visual reminder of all the classes they have missed.
Rewards can be handed out to the student with
the maximum attendance (works well in the lower
classes) and instead of punishments, students with
lower attendance can be given the duty of
performing different class chores (students and
teacher can collectively decide this, in advance).
SPEAKER:  SECOND HOME: The school is like a second home
HERMINIA T. for students. Therefore, you need to ensure that the
MANATAD school is a safe and happy place for them.
Teachers should be perceptive to a student’s
fluctuating behavioural or performance changes.
It is important to develop a warm open relation
with them and create opportunities that
encourage them to approach you with their
problems.

ADJOURNMENT:
The group discussion adjourned at exactly 4:35 in the afternoon.
