1. Quick Start Guide

1. Set-up Connections

Before using the Program, first please download the latest YAMAHA USB MIDI Driver
from here: Yamaha Steinberg USB MIDI Driver

Then make sure your synth is setup to communicate via USB. On the synth press
[UTILITY] button and then navigate to [MIDI I/O] and set [MIDI IN/OUT] = [USB].

If the driver is installed and the Montage/MODX is connected to the Computer and setup
to communicate properly, start the Performance Editor and go to Menu
[Setup]→[Autoconnect]. This will automatically connect the synth to the program.
Alternatively, you can go to Menu [Setup]→[MIDI Setup] and select the MIDI ports to
which your synth is connected. These are the recommended settings for USB connection
(which will also be selected by the Autoconnect command):

Press [OK] and you will see a confirmation message in the status bar saying i.e.
“MONTAGE6 v2.50.2 connected”.

2. Create a New Library File

Important: This application is called Librarian, so its files are called Libraries. The term
Library has nothing to do with Montage/MODX Library Banks which are simply User
Banks stored in flash memory.

Total Librarian supports two different kinds of Library files:

• Total Library Files

These files can hold all the User banks of your synth. Montage/MODX Support 5
Banks of User Performances and 1 Bank of User Live Sets. So, you can
manipulate all User Banks of your Synth using Total Library Files.

• Performance Library Files

These files can hold an unlimited number of Performances. They serve as “pools”
of Performances from which you can select the Performances you will send to
Total Library files or to the synth.

3. Fill the New Library File with Data

Once you have created a new file you can receive data directly from the synth’s memory
(Menu: Edit→Receive All). If you work with a Total Library file only the User banks can
be received. Preset banks can be received in a Performance Library file and then they
can be copied to specific positions of a Total Library file.

4. Manipulate your Data

See chapters 2 and 3.

5. Browse and Monitor Performances

While having a Library file - filled with Performances - opened, you can always press
[enter] and the selected Performance will be transmitted to the synth’s edit buffer. This
is done for ‘auditioning purposes’ – it allows you listen to the selected Performance
without actually overwriting the synth’s internal memory.

6. Send Data to the Synth or to a File

Once you have finished editing a Library you can store your changes to a file (Menu:
File→Save As) or you can send them directly to the synth if you are working with a Total
Library file (Menu: Edit→Transmit All).

2. Working with Libraries

Library files are presented in Total Librarian in a familiar explorer-like interface. On the
left you see a “directory” structure and on the right you see a “file list”. “Folders” are
bank or folder collections and “files” are the Performances and the Live Sets of your
Library.

Most of the commands available for the manipulation exist as menu items and will be
described later. The commands that do not exist as menu items are:

Patch Editing
You can quickly edit the name of the selected Patch by pressing F2. If you click on the
Performance category field a drop down menu appears and you can quickly set the
Performance’s category and subcategory. If you click on the Patch comment you can
inplace-edit the comment of the selected Patch.

4

Patch Sorting
If you click on the column header of a Patch list, the Patches will be sorted according to
that column. This means that the Librarian supports sorting of Patches by name, by
category/subcategory and by comment. Note that sorting of Patches of a bank does not
affect the synth’s internal memory. You have to use the “Transmit” command to send
the sorted Patches to the synth.

Drag ‘n’ Drop: Patch Reordering Made Easy

This is a powerful feature of Total Librarian that makes reordering of Patches a breeze.
Simply select the Patches you want to move (multiple selections are supported) and
move them to the place you want. Save the Library file and transmit the Patches to the
synth.

3. Working with the Editors

Total Librarian is a comfortable workspace from which you can call all the different
editors of the Complete Pack. You can access the installed editors from the Menu
[Editors] and from the Editors Toolbar. If an editor menu item appears grayed out it
means that the corresponding editor is not installed on your system and you need to run
the setup program again.

Example Editor Usage

Let’s say you’ve opened a Total Library file containing some Performances. You can use
the Performance Editor to edit the Performances contained in this file. Right-click on the
Performance you want to edit and select “Edit” from the context-menu. The data of the
Performance are sent to the edit buffer of the synth and the editor opens automatically
showing the data of the Performance you want to edit!

Then you can start tweaking the Performance parameters using the Performance Editor.

Once you’ve finished tweaking the Performance you can send it back to the Total Library
file: right-click on the Performance and select “Receive from Edit Buffer” from the
Performance context-menu. Save the Total Library file and your newly tweaked
Performance is safe!

• Export as Text
You can save a list of Patches names to a text file with this command. Exported
data can be used to create print outs of your live set lists, or simply help you
keep track of what you have in your Library files.

• Recent Files
You can quickly load one of the last 16 edited files here.

• Exit
Exit the application.

Edit

• Undo
This command reverses the last edit or command made to the active Library file.

• Redo
The Redo command re-applies the action or command on which you have used
the Undo command.

• Search
You can search for a specific Patch in your Library by giving its name or part of it.
When you double click on the result the Patch you were looking for gets selected
in the active Library file.

• Remove Duplicates
If you have imported many Patches from different sources perhaps some identical
Patches exist in your Library file. This utility will search for duplicate Patches and
allow you to select which of the duplicates you want to delete.

• Select All
You can select all the Patches of a bank using this command.

• Invert Selection
Inverts the current selection – deselects the selected Patches and selects the
unselected ones.

• Transmit All
This command allows you transmit all the banks of the Library file to the synth.
You can select which banks you actually want to transfer each time.
Please, note that this command works only for Total Library files because only
these files have the same structure with the synth’s internal memory.

8

• Receive All
This command works for both Library formats. If the currently active Library file
is a Total Library, it can receive all the user banks from the synth. If the currently
active Library is a Performance Library, it can receive all Performance Banks to
store them as collections!

• Patch
See chapter 4 (Patch Menu Commands).

View

• Up Folder
One of the biggest advantages of the Library files is that they present their data
in a explorer like interface. This command moves you to the upper ‘folder’ which
may be a bank collection or a collection of other ‘folders’.

• Keyboard
This command opens up a MIDI keyboard window which you can use to play and
audition Performances!

Editors

• Performance Editor

Setup

• MIDI Setup
Here you have to select the MIDI-in and MIDI-out ports to which your Synth is
connected. You can define the device id (usually it is 1). You can also define the
interval (in milliseconds) to be added whenever multiple system exclusive
messages are sent to the Synth (this should be 0). Finally, you can select two
auxiliary ports: one additional MIDI-in port to which an external MIDI keyboard
or controller is connected and one additional MIDI out port through which input
data will be echoed to an externally connected Tone Generator (MIDI Thru
functionality). Recommended settings are shown below:

• Autoconnect
Instead of manually defining the MIDI ports to which your Synth is connected you
can use this command to let the program detect the ports automatically.

• Preferences

Startup Options:
You can choose what you want to happen when you start Total Librarian. You can
make it load an empty Total Library, an empty Performance Library, your last
loaded Library File or simply do nothing.

Dependency Options:
Total Librarian supports dependency tracking. This means that it knows if a patch
uses other patches or when it is used by other patches.
According to the Montage/MODX architecture:
• Performances can be used by Live Sets
• Live Sets can use Performances.
In Total Librarian terminology when a patch uses another patch it is called a
‘parent’ patch and when it is used by another patch it is called a ‘child’ patch.

Enable Dependency Coloring

Here you can enable patches coloring according to their dependency status. By
default when a patch is a child it appears in red and when it’s a parent it appears
in blue. You are free to redefine these colors.

5. Patch Menu Commands

If you select Edit→Patch from the main menu or simply right click on a Patch the Patch
menu appears.

Patch Menu

• Send to Edit Buffer

You can send the selected Patch to the synth’s edit buffer just to listen to it - it
does not make any changes to the synth’s internal memory. If the corresponding
editor is open it receives the sent data automatically.

• Receive from Edit Buffer

With this command you can receive the data of the edit buffer to the currently
selected Patch in the Total Library file. For Performance Library Files it will create
a new Performance after the selected one.

14
MONTAGE/MODX Total Librarian Manual

• Edit
This command sends the selected Patch to the edit buffer and launched the
appropriate editor to edit the Patch.

• Send Program Change

This command sends a program change command to the synth so that the
selected Patch in the Library gets selected in the synth too.

• Transmit
This command exists only in Patches of Total Library files. Each Patch in a Total
Library represents a location in the synth’s memory. With this command you can
transfer the selected Patches to their corresponding position in the synth’s
memory. The synth’s memory gets overwritten.

• Receive
This command exists only in Patches of Total Library files. The currently selected
Patches in the Library get the data from the corresponding positions of the
synth’s memory.

• Initialize
This command initializes the selected Patches to their default state.

• Rename
This command allows you enter a new name for the selected Patch.

• Delete
This command deletes the selected Patches. For Total Library files it empties their
slots. For Performance Libraries it completely removes the Performances from the
file.

• Copy
This command copies the selected Patches to the clipboard.

• Paste
You can paste previously copied Patches using this command. If you are pasting
to a Total Library the Patches on the clipboard will overwrite the selected Patches
on the file. If no Patch is selected in the destination bank, the Patches will be
copied to the first slot of the bank.
If you are pasting to a Performance Library, the new Performances will be
inserted before the selected Performances. If no Performance is selected the new
Performances will be added to the end of the list.

• Swap
This command is available in Total Library files only. It helps you exchange the
position of Patches between different banks of the same file. Select the Patches
you want to move and copy them to the clipboard using the Copy command.
Then right click on the destination position where you want to send the Patches
(ie in a different bank) and select the Swap command. The copied Patches will be
pasted to the new position and the existing Patches in the new position will be
moved to the original position of the copied Patches!

15
MONTAGE/MODX Total Librarian Manual

• Sort
You can sort only the selected Patches using this command. The selected Patches
can be sorted by name, category or comment.

• Remove Duplicates
This command executed the Remove Duplicates command (Edit→Remove
Duplicated) among the selected Patches. It removes the duplicate Patch entries
found and shows a report of what it did.

• Properties
With this command you can edit the properties of the selected Patches.
The properties of a Patches are
o Name: Patch name
o Category: Performance category and subcategory
o Comment: a brief description for the Patch so that you recognize it easily

Please, note that if multiple Patches are selected you can make changes to all
Patches at once and you can only edit some of the fields, leaving the rest of the
fields unchanged.
