Arithmetic Progression (AP)
AP is a sequence whose terms increase or decrease
by a fixed number. This fixed number is called the
common difference.
General Term

If a is the first term and d the common difference, of AP

Example Find the number of terms in the sequence 4, 12, 20, ........108
Sum of n terms
Sum of n terms

The sum of the first n terms the AP is given by

Example The sum of integers from 1 to 100 that are divisible by 2 or 5 is
Important Result

Tn = Sn- Sn-1
Example Suppose that all the terms of an arithmetic progression (AP.) are
natural numbers. If the ratio of the sum of the first seven terms to the
sum of the first eleven terms is 6 : 11 and the seventh term lies in
between 130 and 140, then the common difference of this A.P. is
2015
Properties of A. P.
The common difference can be zero, positive or
1
negative.
Properties of A. P.

2 If a, b, c are in A.P. ⇒ 2 b = a + c
Example

are in arithmetic progression. Determine the value of x

Properties of A. P.

3 Considering Numbers in A.P.

Example The sum of three numbers in A.P. is 27 and the sum of their
squares is 293, find them.
Properties of A. P.

4 The sum of the terms of an A.P. equidistant from the

beginning & end is constant and equal to the sum of
first & last terms.
Properties of A. P.

6 If each term of an A.P. is increased, decreased,

multiplied or divided by the same non zero number,
then the resulting sequence is also an A.P..
Example If are in AP, Then show that

are also in AP.

Example Let a1, a2, a3 ……… a100 be an arithmetic progression with a1 = 3 and

For any integer n with 1 < n < 20, let m = 5n. If

2011
does not depend on n, then a2 is
Example A pack contains n cards numbered from 1 to n. Two consecutive
numbered cards are removed from the pack and the sum of the
numbers on the remaining cards is 1224. If the smaller of the numbers
on the removed cards is k, then k - 20 = 2013
