Tension
To ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the
pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before
you start knitting your project. A tension swatch is a small
sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and
rows and check them against the measurements (cm/in)
given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the
pattern’s tension, it means your knitting is tighter. If you get
FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your knitting is looser.
Sometimes, it works to knit tighter or looser to compensate.

Moss Stitch:
10 cm/4” = 12 stitches
10 cm/4” = 19 rows

1x1 Rib Stitch:

10 cm/4” = 12.5 stitches
10 cm/4” = 15 rows

You can find all techniques at the back of the pattern.

SIZING
The pattern includes directions for 6 sizes. When the
instructions differ between sizes, information is given for size
1 first, then for sizes 2 - 6 in brackets, separated by a colon.

12cm/4.7’’. Approx. 18 rows. Make sure your last row is
a wrong side row.

3 Work 6 rows in moss stitch.

stitch until you have 1 stitch left of the row. Increase
into the last stitch. (26 [28:29:30:30:31] stitches).

5 Work 5 rows in moss stitch, keeping to the moss stitch

pattern.

6 Increase Row: Increase into the first stitch. Work in moss

stitch until you have 1 stitch left of the row. Increase

11 BIG TIME JUMPER

ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING
1 Place your front and back panels on top of each other,
with the wrong sides touching.

2 Thread your sewing needle with a length of yarn. Starting

at the outside edges, use the horizontal invisible seam
technique to sew the shoulder seams for 11.5cm/4.5’’[13c
m/5.1’’:15cm/5.9’’:17.5cm/6.9’’:19.5cm/7.7’’:22cm/8.6’’].

RS

3 Using short pieces of yarn, mark the centre of each

sleeve and match these with the shoulder seams.
Measure 16.5cm/6.5’’[18cm/7.1’’:19.5cm/7.7’’:20.5cm
/8.1’’:21.5cm/8.5’’:22.5cm/8.9’’] down the sides of the
front and back and place markers. Matching these to
the outer edges of the sleeves, use the perpendicular
seaming technique to sew the sleeves to the body.

4 Finally, with the right side of the fabric facing you, use
the vertical invisible seam technique to sew the sides of
the front and back together, then continue and sew the
sleeve seams.

KNITTING TECHNIQUES

Help’s only a stitch away. Watch the video tutorials

Ø online at www.woolandthegang.com/t/how-to

Work! Work! Work!

There are two main ways to ‘work’ stitches: they can be knitted
or purled. When the pattern asks you to ‘work’ a number of
stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify which stitch pattern to
work in.

Cable cast on / Ø Online video tutorial

Create a slipknot on the left hand needle. Work a knit stitch,
but do not slip the stitch off the left needle. Bring the right
needle up and place the stitch onto the left needle. Pull out
the right needle. Now you will have two stitches on your left
needle. Now insert the right needle between the two stitches,
wrap and bring through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto
the left hand needle. Repeat until you have the number of
stitches needed.

1 x 1 Rib stitch / Ø Online video tutorial

When working over an uneven number of stitches, repeat the
following two rows:
Row 1: Knit the first stitch, purl the next. Continue alternating
between knit and purl stitches until you have just one stitch
left, knit this stitch.
Row 2: Purl the first stitch, knit the next. Continue alternating
between purl and knit stitches until you have just one stitch
left, purl this stitch.

HELP! Ø WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM/T/HOW-TO 14
To work over an even number of stitches, only repeat row 1.

Moss Stitch / Ø Online video tutorial

A simple ‘knit 1, purl 1’ stitch where you alternate between
knit and purl stitches on every row.

For an uneven number of stitches: knit one stitch, then purl

one stitch, repeat these two stitches until you only have one
stitch left, knit this stitch. Repeat this row.

For an even number of stitches repeat the following 2 rows:

Row 1: Knit one stitch, then purl one stitch. Repeat to the end
of the rw.
Row 2: Purl 1 stitch, then knit 1 stitch. Repeat to the end of
the row.

15 BIG TIME JUMPER

Increasing into the stitch / Ø Online video tutorial
Start by knitting the stitch in the usual way - but don’t slip it
off the left needle. Now insert the right needle purl-wise into
the same stitch again, and knit it one more time. Slip it off
the left needle.

Adding a new ball of yarn / Ø Online video tutorial

When your ball of yarn runs out, or when you need to change
the colour, tie a loose knot on to the tail with the new ball of
yarn and slide it up to the needle. Tighten the knot. Continue
knitting with the new yarn.

Casting off / Ø Online video tutorial

To complete your project, you need to cast off your last row of
stitches in order to make an edge that won’t unravel. For your
final row, knit the first two stitches. Using the tip of the left
needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second stitch and
then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only one stitch
on your right needle. Knit the next stitch from the left needle,
then lift the previous stitch over it and off the needle as
before. Do this with each stitch until there are no stitches on
the left needle and just one stitch on the right needle. Cut the
yarn, leaving a 15 cm/6’’ end. Pull on the last loop until the
end pops through - you’ve now secured the last stitch.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES
Vertical invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial
This technique is used to join the side edges of two pieces.
Place the two knitted pieces side by side with the right
sides up.

Insert your sewing needle under the first horizontal bar

between the first two stitches on the edge you want to join.
Pull the yarn through and insert the needle through the
opposite horizontal bar on the other piece. Sew back and
forth throuh the horizontal bars along the edge. To tighten the
stitches, pull the yarn gently – and they will disappear.

17 BIG TIME JUMPER

Horizontal invisible seam technique / Ø Online video tutorial
This technique is used for sewing together horizontal edges
(like cast on and cast off edges). Align the two edges so that
they are lined up stitch by stitch. Insert the sewing needle
under a V stitch and then under the corresponding V stitch
on the other side. Continue in this way until the seam is
complete.

Perpendicular invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial

Align the pieces to be seamed side-by-side with the two pieces
at right angles to each other. Insert the knitter’s sewing needle
through the vertical ‘V’ on the piece where you are joining a
cast on or cast off edge, and then through the horizontal bar
on the piece where you are joining a side edge. Repeatthis and
pull the yarn so that the two pieces join together. You will see
that you have more rows to sew than stitches. To compensate
for this, insert the needle under two horizontal bars on the
side edge at the same time every third stitch.

HELP! Ø WWW.WOOLANDTHEGANG.COM/T/HOW-TO 18
Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial
Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off
and stop it from unravelling. Thread the tail onto the sewing
needle. Weave the yarn along the edge of your knitting as
shown in the illustration. Where you have started a new
ball, weave one tail in one direction and the other tail in the
opposite direction. Weave in approximately 10 cm/4”, then
cut the tail.
