Tyler or Outer Guard

Telhador ou Guarda Externo

The Tyler or Outer Guard is the Doorman or Security Guard of the Lodge. It is his duty to see
that only Brethren enter the Lodge once it is in session and that no Brother enters the Lodge in a
superior degree.
O Telhador ou Guarda Externo é o Porteiro ou Guarda de Segurança da Loja. É seu dever ver que
somente os Irmãos entram na Loja uma vez em sessão e que nenhum Irmão entra na Loja em um
grau superior.
His role as defined by the Ritual is ‘Being armed with a drawn sword, to keep off all Intruders
and Cowans to Masonry’.
Seu papel, conforme definido pelo Ritual, é "Estar armado com uma espada desembainhada, para
afastar todos os intrusos e goteiras da Maçonaria".
(A Cowan in strictly Masonic terms is anyone not properly entitled, who seeks to discover
Masonic Secrets by eavesdropping or otherwise spying on Masonic Ceremonies.)

The Tyler is expected to ‘vet’ late-comers before announcing them and is entitled to ask to see
their Grand Lodge Certificate or other proofs before doing so if they are unknown to him.
Espera-se que o Telhador "antecipe" os que chegam atrasados antes de os anunciar e tenha o
direito de pedir para ver o seu Certificado da Grande Loja ou outras provas antes de o fazer, se
lhes forem desconhecidos.
If he has any reservations about admitting a late-comer he should advise the Inner Guard quietly.
The Inner Guard will then deal with the matter according to the Lodge practice.*

baixa. O Guarda Interno então lidará com o assunto de acordo com a prática da Loja.
He is responsible as well, for ensuring that Candidates are properly prepared for the degree into
which they are to be admitted, including, for 2nd and 3rd Degree candidates, that they are
familiar with the correct Signs.

para o grau em que serão admitidos, incluindo, para os candidatos de 2º e 3º Grau, que estão

In many Lodges he has the responsibility of Dressing the Temple prior to the Meeting and of
Clearing it afterwards. He may be able to call upon the support of the Deacons or other brethren
in either function.

In a Regular Meeting his duties will follow the following pattern:

To Dress the Lodge according to the custom of that Lodge;

To ensure that all Brethren sign the Attendance Register;

To confirm that the Lodge is properly Tyled and to respond to all Knocks;

To prepare the Candidate for the ensuing ceremony, if necessary reassuring him and easing any
nerves. To greet, if necessary examine and then announce late-comers to the Inner Guard;
Preparar o Candidato para a cerimônia seguinte, se necessário, tranquilizando-o e amenizando
qualquer nervosismo. Para saudar, se necessário, examine e depois anuncie os que chegam
atrasados à Guarda Interna;
To assist the Candidate to ‘restore himself to his personal comfort’ and then to re-introduce him
to the Inner Guard;

To clear the Lodge after the meeting

At the Festive Board the Tyler will propose the Tyler’s Toast to conclude the Evening.

*How many Lodges have a procedure ready for such an event, bearing in mind that the Inner
Guard may be in his first active role as a Mason and not necessarily very confident?

I feel that a past master is best suited to the role of Tyler, mainly due to the installation and inner
workings. But also to the very real danger of preparing the candidate incorrectly. This is an
important role. I have tyled many a meeting as a master mason. When needs must, by all means
step up to the plate.
Sou de opinião que um Mestre Passado é mais adequado para o papel de Telhador,
principalmente devido à instalação e funcionamento interno. Mas também para o perigo muito
real de preparar o candidato incorretamente. Este é um papel importante. Eu montei muitas
reuniões como um Mestre Maçom. Quando as necessidades devem, por todos os meios, subir ao
prato.
