Helping Hands announces ministry services coordinator

Helping Hands, after much prayerful and diligent review throughout the summer, is announcing that they have filled the role of the ministry services coordi- nator position. Effective Oct. 1, Deb Dexter serve Help- ing Hands, and the community, in this very important role for the new vision that is being developed for this community ministry. Dexter has a diverse background and lives west of Howard City. She currently attends Grace Community Church. She has a bachelor of science degree from In- diana University and has worked in childhood educa- tion, counseling and various other ministry service po- sitions. She is actively involved in a number of service areas at Grace Community Church and was previously actively involved in children’s worship and VBS at Pine Grove Community Church for approximately 5 years. Her volunteer experience involves serving in food banks in Maine and Indiana. She has actively been involved in fundraising activities for the school and has worked hand in hand with teachers, students, ad-

ministrators and coaches. She also has been a Sunday school teacher and leaders of GEMS girls club, Patch the Pirate and coordinates weekly family dinners at Grace Community Church. Initially the role of ministry services coordinator will be approximately 10 to 12 hours per week and Dex- ter will be learning more about the churches and vol- unteers that serve as the strong foundation for Help- ing Hands. As these bonds are strengthened, Helping Hands will begin trying to develop a network of re- sources that go beyond just providing food and will strive to take the level of service that Helping Hands provides to the community to a whole new level. In addition to the new vision involved with the Min- istry Services Coordinator position, Helping Hands continue to seek donations to assist with its new build- ing project. This project will be constructed just south of the Howard City VFW hall and will begin only when adequate financial resources have been raised for con- struction.

support

In the quaint village of Croton there is a community church known as the Croton Church. This church has been a historical ‘beacon’ since

it was built in 1871. The Croton com- munity would like to restore this church to it’s original beauty and continue to add his-

tory to this lovely church. It started as the “Congregational Church of Christ” and cost $2450 for the building alone. The land was $50, church bell $120 plus $12.72 for freight; $56.55 fir stove pipes and fixtures, and $10

for the pulpit. The organ was donated by a family in Grand Rapids and was brought to Croton by wagon. Dedication cer- emonies took place November 11th and 12th, 1871. The church has been open to all denominations with no charge to the worshipers. The Croton Community Church is currently being run by the Croton Religious Society and community support. A small congregation is currently using the building for Sun- day services. They have replaced the well, upgraded the electrical, and fixed the furnace. The Croton Religious Society would appreciate community sup- port to restore this historical build- ing to its original beauty.

Newaygo High School Marching Band heading to state competition

Congratulations to the Newaygo High School Marching Band on their first place victory at the Jenison Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 23. The band also won the caption award for best general effect! This was their second competition in the MCBA (Michigan Competing Band Association) where they competed with bands representing Wa- tervliet, Kent City, Hartford, Parchment, Comstock Park, Belding, Grant and Godwin Heights. After this competition, they were ranked second in the State. The band is headed to state competition on Nov. 6 at Ford Field. The Michigan Competing Band Association is a Michigan non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of instrumental music education in Michigan schools. Bands are divided into flights based on their school enrollment. This is adjusted every year based on how many bands commit to competing in MCBA. They split bands into four “flights,” Flight I, II, III, and IV.

MCBA competitions are scored slightly differ- ently than scholastic competitions. The judging starts at 0.0 and there are seven judges: music indi- vidual, music ensemble, music effect 1, music effect 2, visual individual, visual ensemble, and visual effect. The music and visual individual judges are on the field with the students, while the remaining judges watch from the press box area. The music individual and music ensemble scores are added together for the music total. The same goes for the visual individual and visual ensemble scores. The music effects scores and the visual effect score are added together to create the general effect Score, and then the three totaled scores are added to reach the final score. Awards are given for best music, best visual, and best general effect. The top 11 scoring bands in each flight are in- vited to participate in these finals. These top 11 bands are determined by their championship aver- age score.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

Many thanks to those who helped make the 7th Annual Pumpkin Party such a great event. We had over 100 children and nearly 80 adults in attendance on October 30. The event was held at Christ the King Catholic Church. Children and parents participated in games, hayrides, face- painting, pumpkin carving, and cake-walking, and enjoyed a va- riety of treats as well. A huge thanks goes to our very generous donors, including Festida Foods of Cedar Springs, Independent Bank of How- ard City, Leppink’s of Howard City, Todd Lewis of Amble, Da- vid Pyle of Howard City, War- ren White of White’s Bargain House, Watt’s Orchards, and the wonderful individuals and volunteers who donated their time, baked goods, and candy for trunk-or-treaters. This year’s Pumpkin Party volunteers were mostly youth members from Christ the King, Bethel Lutheran Church, and Grace Community Church. A special thanks to each of them as well.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall — think of it, ALWAYS.”

Mahatma Gandhi

The Path to Eagle Scout

Tearing down and con-

structing new portable shelves

is not most teenagers’ idea of

a fun Saturday activity. But

for James VanPopering, 15, the experience of hand sawing and building a removable wall- shelving unit led him to his Ea- gle Scout badge. James, a Howard City resident and Tri County High School student, coordinated the

project with the help of his com- rades, Troop 79 out of the VFW

in Howard City. The teen heard

about the need for new portable shelves for the Helping Hands Food Pantry and decided he needed to do something about it. He and his Troop had done

a food drive for the pantry last

year, so he was familiar with the facility. The food pantry is a nonprofit organization that helps area residents with sup- plementing their food budget. The project was to tear down and replace a section of shelves and add more so there could be more storage. The area of construction was a small

pantry in the building. “It was in pretty bad shape.” James said. “The shelves were bow- ing. There wasn’t enough room

to store food. They didn’t look

professional.” James knew the

project would be challenging. It was something, however, that he knew he could do. He has been in woodshop 2 years and

is starting his third.

With the help of his Troop, White Creek Lumber, Matt- son’s Hardware, Leo Butler Construction and private dona- tions, James managed the tear

Construction and private dona- tions, James managed the tear down and construction of the new removable

down and construction of the new removable shelves. “The shelves needed to be remov- able because they are moving.” Helping Hands is planning on moving to a new location, the southern end of Howard City on what is fondly known as “Old 131”. The management process is part of being an Ea- gle Scout. James had to deal with unexpected obstacles, like not having enough funds, need- ing a place to store lumber out

of the weather, and a surprise concrete wall. Eagle Scout is the high- est honor awarded by the Boy Scouts. Only two percent of all Boy Scouts ever acquire the

foremost rank of Eagle Scout, accourding to the Boy Scouts of America website. Neil Arm- strong, Steven Speilberg, Bill Gates, and President Gerald Ford all achieved the highest

rank of Eagle Scout in their youth while participating in Boy Scouts of America (BSA). 2010 is the BSA’s 100th Birthday, and those scouts who earn their Eagle Rank before December 31st receive a commemorative Eagle scarf. James joined the Scouting as a Cub Scout and earned all his ranks as well as the Arrow of Light Award, which is the highest honor you can achieve in Cub Scouts. He then moved up to Boy Scoutsd and began rigorous steps to fulfill the re- quirements in the areas of lead- ership, service, and outdoor skills. Twenty-one merit badges later, James found himself with the Boy Scout rank he sought but not before spending hours volunterring; leading a troop; planning, developing, and car- rying out his successful service project.

nance No. 10-02Z, are as follows:

3. Wi nd Energy Systems. Wi nd energy systems, consisting of windmills, towers and

related equipment for the production of wind-generated point-of-use electric power are

4.

Biomass Facilities. Facilities and equipment for the generation of energy by means

of

biomass gasification plants are permitted only as a special land use approved by the

5. Other Alternative Energy Systems. Certain other types of alternative energy systems

and equipment may be permitted as provided under the terms of Chapter 18A.

6. Regulatory Provisions. The amending ordinance incorporates certain existing regula-

tory provisions formerly located elsewhere in the zoning ordinance, as to wind energy systems. The ordinance includes various terms and conditions on the establishing and operation of solar energy systems, including photovoltaic cells, solar tiles and panels and similar equipment. TOWNSHIP OF PIERSON COUNTY OF MONTCALM, MICHIGAN NOTICE OF ADOPTION OF TOWNSHIP ORDINANCE AND SUMMARY OF THE REGULATORY EFFECT THEREOF

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on October 21, 2010, the Township Board of the Township of Pierson adopted an ordinance amending the Township of Pierson Zoning Ordinance. The principal provisions of the amending ordinance are as follows:

1. Medical Marijuana Regulations. The ordinance is adopted to regulate the acquisi-

tion, cultivation, use and distribution of marijuana for lawful medical purposes to the extent permitted by the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act of 2008 (the “Act”), and for the further purpose of avoiding or moderating potential adverse effects associated with the cultivation, distribution and use of marijuana, including medical marijuana.

2. Zone Districts. The medical use of marijuana, in accordance with the Act, is permit-

ted in the AG, R-R, R-1, LR, R-2, R-3, PUD, C-1, C-2 and I Districts, under specified limitations. In the AG, R-R, R-1, LR, R-2, R-3 and PUD Districts, a primary caregiver may assist a qualifying patient with the patient’s medical marijuana use, but the pri- mary caregiver may do so only in the single-family dwelling of the qualifying patient. In the C-1, C-2 and I Districts, a primary caregiver may assist a qualifying patient with the patient’s medical marijuana use in only a principal building in those districts.

3. Compliance with the Act. No provision of the amending ordinance authorizes con-

duct not permitted by the Act. A qualifying patient and a primary caregiver must be registered by the State Department of Community Health; each of them is limited to that quantity of marijuana and marijuana plants specified in the Act. Marijuana plants must at all times be kept in an enclosed, locked facility as described in the Act.

4. Medical Marijuana Use Permit. A medical marijuana use permit, issued by the

Township, is required for medical marijuana use in the Township. The permit may be issued only to a qualifying patient or a primary caregiver. The permit is issued by the Township Clerk, upon application, and upon the Clerk’s determination that the pro- posed medical marijuana use would comply with the ordinance provisions and the Act. Confidentiality provisions apply as to the content of applications and related matters, in accordance with the Act.

5. Prohibited Activity. Neither a qualifying patient nor a primary caregiver may sell or

offer to sell medical marijuana paraphernalia as a business or commercial activity, nor distribute written or other information or material about medical marijuana use, as a business or commercial activity. The ordinance includes limitations on the cultivation of medical marijuana and related activity.

6. Other Matters. The ordinance specifically does not provide immunity from pros-

ecution for any conduct that is not in compliance with the Act, nor immunity from prosecution for violation of any applicable Federal statutes, including, but not limited to, the Federal Controlled Substances Act.

7. Effective Date. The ordinance will become effective November 15, 2010. A copy of

the ordinance may be inspected or purchased at the Township office during Township office hours.

Central Boiler Trade-out Program, Encourages Consumers to Buy Cleaner, More Efficient Outdoor Furnaces

GREENBUSH, Minn. — October 22, 2010 — Central Boiler announced an incentive program designed to help consumers purchase new cleaner outdoor wood or outdoor wood pellet furnaces. The Trade-out Program gives buyers up to $3,500 towards a qualifying environmentally-friendly Central Boiler outdoor wood or wood pellet furnace when they trade-in their old outdoor wood or wood pellet furnace. This program not only benefits the consumer’s pocketbook, but also the environment.

Central Boiler’s E-Classic and Maxim models meet the EPA Phase 2 emissions level. The EPA states that Phase 2 furnaces are up to 90% cleaner than non-qualified models.

Consumers who purchase a Central Boiler E-Classic or Maxim M250 fur- nace model and trade-in their old qualifying outdoor wood or wood pellet furnace will realize an even larger savings if they also take advantage of the $1,500 tax credit. Consumers who qualify will save up to $5,000 with the Trade-out Program and the tax incentive. The Trade-out program is a limited time offer available at participating dealers. Qualifying furnaces must be purchased and placed in service by December 31, 2010 to be eligible for the tax credit.

For more information on this program contact H2Oasis, Inc., 5950 14 Mile Rd., Rockford, MI 49341.

Central Boiler is North America’s largest manufacturer of quality out- door wood, wood pellet and corn furnaces. Based on 25 years of engi- neering wood-burning systems and a desire to create safer and more efficient heating products, the company’s innovations and patents have established Central Boiler as a leader in product quality. The uncom- promising attitude to manufacture the best and always strive to make it better is at the core of the company’s growth. Central Boiler products are sold by more than 400 authorized dealers throughout the United States and Canada. Central Boiler is located in Greenbush, Minn., where it was established in 1984.
