NURSING EQUIPMENT

Penlight: A small flashlight in the shape of a pen.It will be used to check areas of the mouth and throat,
examine wounds and to assess pupil response.Nurses uses penlight to monitor the patients.

Laryngeal or Dental Mirror: Is used for examining the larynx and other areas of the throat. It may be
used to visualize the throat for the application of anesthesia or removal of tissue

Nasal Speculum: An instrument used to widen the opening of a nostril so the inside can be more easily
seen.A duck-bill-shaped device that doctors use to see inside a hollow part of your body and diagnose or
treat disease.

Ophthalmoscope: Also called funduscopy, is a test that allows a health professional to see inside the
fundus of the eye and other structure.

Othoscope: A medical device which is used to look into the ears. Health care providers use otoscopes to
screen for illness during regular check-ups and also to investigate ear symptoms. Potentially tend to give
a view of the ear canal and tympanic membrane or eardrum.

Percussion Hammer: Medical instrument used by practitioners to test deep tendon reflexes. Testing for
reflexes is an important part of the neurological physical examination in order to detect abnormalities in
the central or peripheral nervous system. Reflex hammers can also be used for chest percussion.

Turning Fork: Used by medical practitioners to assess a patient's hearing. This is most commonly done
with two exams called the Weber test and Rinne test, respectively.It produce a pure tone and overtones.

Vaginal Speculum: One common use of the speculum is for vaginal exams.To open the walls of the
vagina and examine the cervix.

Cotton Applicator: Medical swabs that are widely used for diagnostic specimen collection, wound
treatment and to apply medication.

Disposable Pads: Chux as they are called in the hospital, offer convenient incontinence protection for
beds, furniture and more. Most bedpads can absorb enough liquid to provide protection against typical
incontinence or bed wetting.
Gloves: Gloves create a barrier between germs and your hands. Wearing gloves in the hospital helps
prevent the spread of germs.

Lubricant: Are substances used by health care providers to provide lubrication and lessen discomfort to
the patient during certain medical and surgical procedures such as vaginal or rectal examinations.

Tounge Blades/ Depressor: a tool used in medical practice to depress the tongue to allow for
examination of the mouth and throat. The most common modern tongue depressors are flat, thin,
wooden blades, smoothed and rounded at both ends, but, historically, tongue depressors have been
made of a variety of materials.
