Chemical composition analysis is performed on samples taken during casting, with Pechiney spectrographs and set of
calibration standards. Analysis made on samples taken after casting may show deviations.

Metal preparation
Our production process ensures excellent quality and especially high extrudability.

Fabrication
Extrusion
Billet preheating
For a maximum extrusion speed, the billet preheating temperature should be the lowest possible compatible with
extrusion press capacity and die performance. Extrusion speed should be adjusted so that the temperature of the
profile as it leaves the press is between 530°C and 560°C. For the preheating temperature, a lower limit of 480°C
should be respected for mechanical resistance. Compliance with this recommendation will improve both productivity
and finish.

When a particular difficult section has to be extruded or when the capacity of the press limits the extrusion speed,
it may become necessary to use higher billet temperatures than those indicated below. In this event, extrusion speed
should be moderated to avoid any harmful effect on finish.

Container temperature
The temperature of the container should be 50°C to 70°C lower than the billet temperature to prevent billet skin
from being extruded through the die.

Recommended extrusion parameters:

Type of extruded Billet Container Exit Extrusion Rate of cooling to

profile temperature (ÆC) temperature (ÆC) temperature (ÆC) speed (m/min) 250ÆC (ÆC/s)
Open section 480-500 430-450 530-560 17-38 >5
Hollow section 490-510 430-450 530-560 11-25 >5
600582 has an extrudability index of 38.1

Profile quenching
A good profile cooling is necessary to achieve the desired level of mechanical properties and uniform surface finish
after anodising. 600582 requires the cooling rate to be 5°C/s or faster in the 500°C-250°C temperature range. In
most cases, this cooling rate can be achieved in mist quenching. Water quenching may be necessary for the thicker
(t>5 mm) sections.

Straightening
Straightening of extruded profiles is usually achieved with a light elongation of ca. 0.5%.
Higher elongation values of up to 1.5% may be employed in an effort to improve mechanical properties, but with a
risk to mar the finish (orange peel effect).

1
The extrudability index rates the ease of extrusion of various alloys. Typical values for the 6000 series range between 10 and 100.

Heat treatment
Artificial ageing for maximum strength should be carried out for:
8 hours at 175°C, ±5°C
or 6 hours at 185°C, ±5°C.

The ageing curves shown below indicate mechanical properties for other time periods and temperatures as well.
For this alloy, the strength after ageing is adversely affected by time elapsed between quenching and artificial ageing.

Properties of extruded sections

Mechanical properties
The mechanical properties of 600582 extruded profiles depend on the condition under which they have been
extruded and heat-treated.

Assuming the recommendations above have been followed, the following values should be obtained:

0.2% offset Yield Tensile strength MPa Elongation % Webster hardness Brinell Hardness
Strength MPa

280 310 12 16 96

Anodising
600582 is amenable to anodising, which confers a darker colour than 6060 alloy. The finish can be varied between
bright and matt according to surface treatment time, temperature and the compositions of pickling and/or satin
etching baths. A high temperature of extrusion at the exit from the die gives a brighter finish.

Formability
The recommended 90°bending radius is five times the thickness or more. It is suggested to work with the alloy in
the as-quenched condition, preferably within 12 hours after extrusion, or in the under-aged condition.

Corrosion resistance
The resistance to industrial and marine atmosphere is excellent.
Anodising can further enhance the intrinsic corrosion resistance of the material.

Physical properties
Density 2.70 kg/dm3
Modulus of Elasticity 69 GPa
Thermal conductivity 200 W/m.K
