A few months ago one of our more senior members made an understandable
comment. She felt she did not know me. Along with perhaps half a dozen oth-
ers, she entered and exited the sanctuary every Sunday via the "ramp door" so
she could use the elevator. Meanwhile, I always greeted people at the opposite
end of the church and one floor down. Could I perhaps shake hands at the
ramp door from time to time?
It was a great question. Hearing of it, I resolved that every time we have a fifth
Sunday in a month, I will stand at the ramp door to greet people.
Any time you have a question, a comment, even a complaint, PLEASE speak
with me about it! If you feel you simply cannot come directly to me, please
speak with an elder or a deacon (as our older member did in this case). I can-
not tell how each person feels about me but over the years I have learned to
Inside this issue: my dismay that a few people always "read" me as being more severe than I ac-
tually am. In my family, we call it the Mike Look: I can appear vexed, even an-
gry when I feel nothing of the kind. If I look like that to you please do not be

Session notes 3
Linda and I continue to feel loved by this congregation. I assure you, we love
you back. We look forward with great optimism to finding out whatever God
VBS 5
has in store for us all, together.

Church Happenings 7
On these two Sundays our worship services will include four to five of our favorite tradi-
tional hymns. But in order to know what our "favorite" hymns are, we need to hear from
all members and friends of Central. Please email Pastor Mike at mike@thcpc.org or Sa-
rah in the church office at sarah@thcpc.org to "vote" for your preferred hymns. They
need not be in our current hymnal!

TRIENNIUM - Nine of our youth and two adults from Central and Unity are attending the Pres-
byterian Youth Triennium July 16 – 20 at Purdue. Please pray for Connor, Dawn, Peter, Caroline,
Samuel, Matthew, Miller, Isabelle, Ridge, Jadelyn and Griffin that they will have a great week expe-
riencing what it means to say to God, “here’s my heart.” They will give a report when they get
back.
July Birthdays
During its June meeting, session reviewed reports from commissions and committees and transacted routine
business. Highlights from the meeting appear here.
Pastor’s Report:
Pastor Mike shared his plans for the dedication ceremony for Parker Scanlon and will incorporate language to
include the other children. His work with the Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations program is well under
way. Session discussed the composition of the strategic planning task force. The plan approved by session in
2014 calls for nine members: the moderator, the clerk, and representatives from seven groups: CN, CL, Fa-
cilities, Finance, I&S, Mission, and Worship. To provide a task force representative of the congregation, ses-
sion asks each group to nominate two people who are willing to serve. In addition, session will add two at-
large members from the congregation to create further balance. The task force should be finalized in August.
Treasurer’s Report
The report for the month of May was approved with thanks and one abstention. We have paid $145,000 of
principle on the mortgage and will update the fund balances and investments to market as of June 30. Having
quarterly statements may help lagging summer collections.

Christian Educator’s Report: Cheryl shared plans for VBS next week, noting that attendance is down (5
from Central, 7 from other churches, and 13-14 from 14th and Chestnut). She attended the POV Assembly in
May and has finished the registration for Triennium. She has resigned from the 14th and Chestnut board.
Clerk’s Report: Communion was served during worship on Sunday, June 2. Our session minutes from 2018
were reviewed and approved by POV representatives on May 18. New members Maxine Bough, Charles
Conner, Theodore Conner, Ridge Holder, and Rowyn Holder were publicly received during worship on May
12.
Deacons: at their meeting this afternoon the deacons planned a meal at Westminster Village for members
who reside there.
Church Life: The commission has been busy with special coffee hours and other events.
Facilities: we have signed a contract for west side tuck pointing to be done in the fall. Suggestions for the out-
side use policy were made (certificate of insurance for $x, having a member present, itinerary required, no use
of alcohol, no adjustments to the sound system, exceptions possible at the discretion of the pastor) in anticipa-
tion of preparing a building use form. Facilities will revise the draft.
Worship: Kendra Scanlon will coordinate the usher teams. The congregation has appreciated the weekly pray-
er inserts in the bulletin. We have resources and licenses for the hymn sings later this summer.
Mission: the committee’s motion to send $1500 from local benevolence to 14th and Chestnut Community
Center for summer needs was approved. Bob Guell spoke of the benefits to Kids Hope mentors.
Commissioner to Presbytery: Bob Guell attended the May assembly. A motion dealing with compensation for
a pastor involuntarily separated from a church was tabled and the Committee on Ministry will create new lan-
guage incorporating concerns about a cap. Pyoca will become an entity independent of POV, where it resides,
and Whitewater Valley, its owner. Recognizing its separation and independence should enable it to have more
access to grants and funding. The next assembly is on Saturday, September 14, and Bob may be able to attend.
Announcements: Kevin Christ noted that the family of their German exchange student was highly impressed
with the welcome they received here at Central. Donna Paul-Bonham announced that she and Scott have pur-
chased a home in Michigan and will be leaving Terre Haute.
Thank you to everyone that helped in any way with VBS. It was a good week of learning that water is a gift from God
and we can be filled with the water of life in abundance.
Eric Stidman (WTHI) told us about weather THANKS to UCM for letting us have a water
play day in their yard
