Introduction

The world is becoming more and more competitive. Quality of performance has
become the key factor for personal progress. Parents desire that their children climb the
ladder of performance to as high a level as possible. This desire for a high level of
achievement puts a lot of pressure on students, teachers, schools and in general the
education system itself. In fact, it appears as if the whole system of education revolves
round the academic achievement of students, though various other outcomes are also
expected from the system. Thus, a lot of time and effort of the schools are used for helping
students to achieve better in their scholastic endeavors (Ramaswamy, 1990).

Many students do badly academically, due to factors other than low intellectual
capacity. One such factor is poor study habits, which often result in poor academic
performance even among the naturally bright students. Habits are true indicators of
individuality in a person (Gunaganarar, 2014) So, study habits are the behavior of an
individual related to studies. Which is adjudged from his study habits? In the process of
learning, learner’s habitual ways of exercising and practicing their abilities for learning are
considered as study habits of learners. The pattern of behavior adopted by students in the
pursuit of their studies is considered under the caption of their study habits. Study habits
reveal student personality. Learner’s learning character is characterized by his study habits.
Study habits serve as the vehicle of learning. It may be seen as both means and ends of
learning (Halyannavar, 2014)

Study habits play a very important role in the life of students. Success or failure of
each student depends upon his own study habits. Some students study more but they fail to
achieve more. Others study less but achieve more. Success of each student definitely
depends upon ability, intelligence and effort of students. No doubt, regular study habits
bring their own rewards in the sense of achievement of success.

Aluede and Onolemhemhen (2001) studied the effect of study habit counseling on
the academic performance of secondary school students in English language. The 108
Senior secondary school class and two students of lumen Christ secondary school, Uromi,
Edo state, Nigeria was targeted. The multi-stage stratified sampling method was used. The
study habit inventory (Bakare, 1977) was taken. The findings of the study were counseling
students on good study habits can bring about improvement in the students’ academic
performance.

Therefore, it is better to develop study habits of Grade 7 students. It is the proper

time and age to cultivate study habits. At this age students are quite matured. They are able
to know what is good and what is bad. They can avoid bad things and invite good things
with the help of teachers (Halyannavar, 2014)

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the relationship of Study Habits and the Academic
Performance of Grade 7 Secondary Students in Math

Specifically, it sought the following questions:

1. What is the level of agreement/disagreement of the respondents in terms of:

a. Note taking
b. Use of library
c. Time Allocation to Study
2. What is the level of the academic performance of the respondents in math as
reflected in their scores in the data instrument?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the
students and of the following:
a. Note taking
b. Use of library
c. Time Allocation to Study

Research Hypotheses

In this study, three null hypotheses were raised and tested:

H0 : There is no significant relationship between notes taking and academic performance

of students in mathematics.
H1: There is no significant relationship between students use of library and their academic
performance in mathematics.

H3 : There is no significant relationship between time allocation to study an students

academic performance in mathematics.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The major task of this research is to answer the specific

questions presented in the statement of the problem. This is

limited to its complete reliance on the self-made questionnaire of

the researcher as the primary instrument for answering the relationship

between the study habits and academic performance in math of grade 7 stidents.

The result of this study will be limited on the perception of

__ student respondents from the public secondary schools in the

Division of Ligao City namely; Amtic National High School, Barayong National High

School, Ligao City National Technical Vocational High School, Deogracias P. Princesa Memorial

High School, Bicol Regional Science High School, Paulba National High School, Bacong

National High School, Palapas National High School, Cabarian National High School and Cabarian

National High School(Maonon Extension)

Ligao National High School will not be included in the study

because it dominates the number of student respondents in this

study for, it is the biggest public high school in the Division of

Ligao City.

Significance of the Study

The researchers believed that the study when completed would be benefited the
following

 Teachers will have a better understanding of the diversity of their learners. And it
is hoped that they could develop more effective methodologies in teaching their
subject matter.
 Students will be given information on how study affects their academic
performance in math. The result of the study will make them aware of the common
study habits among their co- students.
 The result of the findings will help sensitize parents on how to encourage their
children to develop effective study habit through the information that would be
provided by the study.
 The study would enable the Department of Education to initiate programs that
would facilitate effective study habits among students in the school: such programs
may include implementation of guidance and counseling services in every school
 Future Researchers, they may be able to use the result of the study in further
research similar to what the study is all about
