Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the influence of mobile

phones in the academic performance of Grade 11 HUMSS

Faraday. Specifically, this study aims to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

2. How frequent does the students use their mobile

phones in class?

3. What is the usage of mobile phone that influence the

academic performance of Grade 11 HUMSS Faraday?

4. What are the positive and negative influences of

using mobile phones among the students from Grade 11

HUMSS Faraday in their academic performance?

5. What recommendations can be formulate based on the

findings of the study?


Assumptions of the Study

This research study pursued to determine and identify

the influence of mobile phones in the academic performance

of Grade 11 HUMSS Faraday learners of University of

Northeastern Philippines school year 2019-2020.

1. The learners from Grade 11 HUMSS Faraday usually and

commonly uses mobile phones for their assignment,

reference books (e-books), research and

entertainment.

2. The respondents often use their mobile phones for

browsing different sites such as YouTube, Facebook,

Google, etc. with the help of internet.

3. The respondents of this research are expected to

respond with honesty in answering the given

questionnaire.

4. Positive effect: Mobile Phones allows the learners

to keep interest in their lessons through creative

power point and video presentations.

Negative effect: Mobile Phones could hinder the

learning process because spending much time in

social media and gaming applications.

5. Policy recommendations can be formulated based on

the findings of the study.


Significance of the Study

This study was an attempt to address specific issue

particularly to the influence of mobile phones in the

academic performance of Grade 11 HUMSS Faraday learners.

This research is expected to contribute and help to give

solution that can help to prevent some certain issues with

regards to the influencing issue in the academic

performance of the learners.

The following will benefit on the findings of the

study:

To Learners. This research study was conducted to

determine the influence of mobile phones on the learners’

academic performance; therefore, learners themselves are

the paramount and the focus of this. It can help them

realize the benefits they could get from this research.

To Educators. This study can not only help parents

from guiding their children to right path, but also this

research could help teachers identify the factors

influencing the academic performance of their learners in

school. They could easily determine the appropriate measure

in selecting teaching method through technological tools

that his/her learners can relate from.


To Administrators. School is considered as the second

home of every learner. This research can help the

administrators facilitate his/her school well by providing

efficient environment and influences that can help

learners, and determining the leading factors that can

influence the performance of learners.

To Parents. The learners are the main concern of this

study however; they are not the only ones who are

considered as main respondents but also parents. This

research can also help them determine the factors that can

influence their child’s performance in school and help them

prevent from bad influences.

To Senior High School Department. The findings of this

study will benefit the department for it will generate data

and awareness that can be bases for future development

plans for the future development.


Scope and Delimitations

This study is to be conducted to determine the

influence of mobile phones in the academic performance

among learners from the Senior High School Department,

Grade 11 HUMSS Faraday at the University of Northeastern

Philippines. The aspects will look into priorities, span of

attention to class discussion, study and sleeping habit,

and usage of mobile phone. How does it influence their

academic performance?
Locale of the Study

University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP)

particularly the Senior High School Department is the

locale of the study. This is one of the prestigious

universities in the entire Bicol Region known as the “Home

of Global Achievers”. It is now on its 70th year of

providing quality but accessible education in the region

offering complete basic education program with pre-school,

education and the following programs: commerce, liberal

arts and social work, criminology, hotel restaurant

management, nursing and midwifery, technical-vocational

programs, engineering and architecture, maritime, law and

post graduate programs.

The vision and mission of the University are

reflective of the founders’ and administrators’ ideals, the

demand of times and needs of the stakeholders.

providing accessible, excellent, quality education for all.


Mission

Produce world-class quality graduates who have faith

in God, lover fro family, integrity and excellence by

maintaining an educational system that is relevant and

responsive to the changing needs and challenges of the

country as well as the global society.

Goal

Total development of a human person who shall be

globally competitive.

The University, A Background

The University of Northeastern Philippines is a

private non-sectarian. It is also known as the “Home of

Global Achievers”. It was established in 1948; it was

founded by a young couple named Atty. Felix Ordas Alfelor

Sr. and Dr. Remedios Regoroso Alfelor as small school and

was first located in a rented property at the town center.

Mabini Memorial School, as it was named in the beginning,

offered complete high school and degree courses in

Education and Liberal Arts. In a few years, the school

bought 17 hectares of land, a former dumpsite near the

town center. It then transferred into the new site and

developed the campus, completing it in the early 1960s and


then was renamed as Mabini College. Other degrees were

added and offered. The school population even grew more

rapidly.

1954, the two wooden buildings, parallel to one

another were constructed at the site of the present

entrance gate and driveway and served as the first

classrooms for elementary classes. Then a long L-shaped

wooden building at the present site of Panga building rose.

To house the large high school enrollees at daytime

and college students during late afternoon and evening. A

U-shaped well groomed 3 nipa made cottages were constructed

near the present site of elementary building to house the

large elementary department.

In 1974, the school receives its university charter

and was finally named as University of Northeastern

Philippines. Four years later, the College of Law opened.

It is the only law school in Iriga. UNEP is considered as

one of the oldest universities in Bicol Region, and it is

one of the two Universities.

Several programs of UNEP have been accredited by the

Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities

Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). Example of these is


the undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, business

administration; elementary and secondary education which

has all been Level II accredited. UNEP has eight College

Departments and has many more courses.

The present campus is 25 hectares of space when

completely filled and developed. A long range plan for the

university campus waits. Presently, the campus has the

original 5 story building, University Cafeteria. The second

to fifth floors are the classrooms and offices for the

College, Liberal Arts, Commerce and Business Education,

Guidance and Counselor, and University Library.

The Felix Ordas Alfelor, Sr., (FOAS) building built in

the 90’s houses the College of Law, Criminology and

Graduate Studies. The University Gymnasium built in early

2000’s has become a multifunction edifice. The new three

storey elementary building is completely finished and can

accommodate increasing elementary enrollees.

UNEP has been awarded as the highest number of

PACUCOA accredited programs in Region V (Bicol Region) in

10 consecutive years 1949 to 2019, many of these graduates

are now in abroad: many are global achievers in their

respective careers.
The High school building is a two storey palladium

with open stage at the center, three room science

laboratories, TLE and an audio visual room. University of

Northeastern Philippines, High School Department opens

Senior High School Program (SHS) where its main objective

is to hone every Senior High School graduate to become

better prepared for college, career ready and entrepreneur.

The High School Department offers all track such as

(1) Academics which includes Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy and

Business Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS) and General Academic Strand (GAS); (2) Technical

Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) includes Home Economics

which comprises of Bartending, Beauty and Nail Care

Services, Bread and Pastry Production, Commercial Cooking,

Cookery Food and Beverage Service; Information and

Communication Technology which includes Computer Hardware

Services and Computer Programming; (3) Sport Tracks which

consists of Baseball, Volleyball and Basketball; and (4)

Arts and Design Tracks will offer courses in graphic or

performing arts. The High School Department was headed by

Dr. Maria P. Dela Vega, Principal; with the supervision of

Dr. Eleanor A. Osea, CESO IV, Vice President of Academic


affairs and with the help of Mrs. Juvy A. Calabines,

Secretary; Mrs. Olympia B. Manaog, Academic Coordinator and

Junior High School Coordinator (JHS); and Mr. Froilan D.

Celetaria, Senior High School Coordinator (SHS).

Through the years, high school learners have proven

their academic worth in various competitions like having

been the overall champion in “Padunungan” contest sponsored

by UP Ibalon (2009), overall champion in “GSP and CAT

Marching Parade Regional Competition”, first among the

private schools in the Regional Achievement test (2008),

National Qualifier as 10th placer for Best in News Section

English Category for The Greenlight, winners in Regional

competition in Oratorical contests, Extemporaneous

speaking, Secondary Schools Press Conference particularly

in script writing and broadcasting (2012), Regional

Qualifiers in Editorial, Sports, Science and Health

writings, Copy reading and Headline writing events all

English category (2013-2014), and in MTAP Competitions. It

received various commendations from the different HEI

testifying its excellent graduates and a PACUCOA Accredited

Program level II.


At present, the High School Department has a total

population of 2,012 students; 1,032 from the JHS and 456

SHS.

Definition of Terms

Mobile Phones it is a kind of an electronic device which is

a size or smaller than a palm that people can bring with

them and use outside.

Application It is a certain program that is installed in

phones or any gadget that has a specific task to perform.

Internet it is a kind of a communication network that can

be used to connect one computer or any electronic devices

to other.

E-books a kind of book or reading material that is

installed and can be open inside a phone or any electronic

devices.

Social Media a websites and applications that enable users

to create and share content or to participate in social

networking.

Website a location connected to the internet that maintains

one or more pages on the World Wide Web.

Academic Performance is the extent to which a learner,

teacher or institution has achieved their short or long

term educational goals.
