What I have learned from the experience?
There are many experiences that I acquired during my stay at TERP ASIA Construction
Corporation. Primarily, I was assigned to the construction of the parking area of its on-going
project Robinsons Place San Pedro. These were:
 I am able to estimates the required volume of actual concreting for mat footing of
the parking area.
 I have learned how the cutting list of rebar done.
 I learned how an actual site engineer’s work and adjustment they conducted in
times of unexpected circumstances occurred in the site.
 I enhanced my knowledge on application of Autocad and Microsoft Excel.
 I conducted the daily monitoring of the accomplishment
As I became an intern in TACC, I can say that I had grown socially and mentally. The best thing
here is that I learned how to deal with different kind of people. As a Civil engineer, a Project-in-
Charge or Project Manager or maybe an Executive in the future. I realized that book-based or
school-based knowledge is different nor not enough compared from the actual scenarios and I
felt fortunate to acquired that experiences and got the lessons within that. That maybe can be my
asset for future endeavors to work and to life.


My experiences with the people around me
At first, I am nervous about the people I could deal with. From the thought that this
people are professionals and way more experienced people than me, I felt that they
would be a pressure to me. Well I got wrong about this because it is way more far
than I expected.
On my stay at site and office, the people there was like family the way they treated
each other and also, they involve us to their circle. I remember one time the
construction manager invites us to play basketball along with them, they do not
hesitate to include us to play with them and also, we ate lunch together, joking
around, leave the office together and helping each other whether if it is work
matter or personal matter. Of course, there is organizational structure established
there but the way I see them and they treated me, I felt that we are as one.
I was very thankful and fortunate to work with them. All learning and life advises were
greatly appreciated and will be surely kept in mind.


My most memorable event during the practicum
For me every day that I stayed on site are memorable to me. But there were several events
occurred on site that I could say brought me some lessons.
One evening during the concrete pouring for footing, the concrete mixer got stuck-up on
halfway from the actual footing. It is because that the way to get there were got muddy because of
the heavy rain occurred that day. It gave us a big trouble because the mixture got to pour
immediately as for it will not be hardened which may give us more trouble. So, the engineer with
us that night make some experiments on how it will be poured and to accommodate the possible
delays. First, they inserted concrete spacers under the wheel of 10 cubic meter-loaded concrete
truck to have a steady maneuvering and we use wheel-barrow to manually pouring of concrete but
it will take us a more time and efforts so we abandoned that idea. Finally, we decided to place
some gravels on the way of the truck and putting some phenolic board to able to have an access to
the footing. And, we put some excess bars to the hardened concrete already on the footing to serve
as dowel that combine the new mix to they called “cold mix”. This they said us are some of
uncertain events occurred during the construction that we are not able to see from any other books.

What can I recommend for the improvement of the Practicum Program?
The Practicum Program of the Department is well organized in terms of the orientation. I
believe that proper orientation is one of the important preparations. But for me, great preparation
is not just enough, there were things still to be improve.
I recommend that the Department add more hours to existing required hours of 240. This I
believe gave the student more time to actual work that they may have on future and to acquire
more knowledge on the field and office. Also, that the Department have the accredited companies
where the students will be sent to assure that they are on great-hands and also not closing the door
to any small firm which may give them actual knowledge of the work.
My advice to those who will take their practicum in the near future
For those who will take their Practicum, my advice is that they should find for companies
as early as possible. Because from the experience there are many companies but there also many
students who also searching for companies so to avoid the rush and finding other company in case
you were not chosen, be an early bird.
Once you are hired, remember it is not the same as in school. The behavior is strictly
supervised and the people around are professionals and it will directly address not your school but

also your personality and how you behave on work. Have a disciplined and give your at most
attention to any orders or instruction that they implementing in the company
Strive for the knowledge not the incentive they will give. You are there to train not to have
a vacation and get your allowance. Some may treat you just like their employee and so be it. It will
be a training ground to the so-called “real world”. Enjoy the stay and make friends with others. It
will also boost your confidence.
