The Mission (why)

The Bellmore-Merrick CHSD has an administrative and instructional technology section

on their website. The philosophy is stated as such:

“At Bellmore Merrick Central High School District our vision of the 21st Century
Digital Age learning environment is one that provides increased opportunities for
students to take a more active role in their learning. Technology integration will
enable students to enhance their problem solving and higher order thinking
skills. Students will be actively engaged in a variety of learning tasks that are
authentic, challenging, and multidisciplinary. Student achievement will be
assessed through tasks that measure student progress towards meeting or
exceeding local, state, and national goals. The realization of this vision will
require input from students, teachers, parents, administration, and the community.
We believe technology is a powerful learning tool that will help every student in
the Bellmore Merrick Central High School District learn to their greatest
potential”.

Technology Integration into the curriculum and the instructional environment (what/who)

The Swivl is a camera with video and audio capacities that allows teachers to save, assess, and

reflect on best teaching practices. The Swivl has a small tracking device/ microphone that

attaches to the teacher who can move freely around the room. The camera is set up separately

and follows the teacher around the room, also tracking movements and recording video plus

audio.

Technology Access/ Infrastructure (how)

The Swivl is easy to use and non-intrusive to the classroom environment. It works with software

on a phone or iPad, or most devices with a camera and audio features. It comes with a compact

tripod which allows the teacher to adjust to preferred height.

Technology Professional Development (how to make it successful, tpack? turnkey?)

Reflective teaching is essential to holding teachers to the highest standards. Teachers should be

able to test it out individually or in collegial pairs. Many district, states, and the national boards

are encouraging and requiring reflective practices such as these. Teachers will hear of the

benefits and practical uses by word of mouth can easily share ideas or turnkey to entire groups.

Technology Literacy and Standards (Justification for using technology)

While formal and informal observations are done routinely every year, a truly thoughtful teacher

needs more honest feedback than this. Swivl allows the teacher to record entire days, entire units

or several activities and review strengths and weaknesses individually, with the students and with

peers. This is invaluable to encouraging meaningful changes and improvements, especially for

veteran teachers.

Technology Assessments (student assessments)

Swivl can be utilized for assessments such as debates, speeches and Socratic seminars. Several

mics cab be dispersed around the room if desired and the camera will track who is speaking and

when. These videos/ audio recordings would be a sophisticated type of realistic assessments.

Evaluation (of the project, implementation)

Reflection should be done in small groups by teachers, as well as students, to gauge comfort

levels and perceived benefits. Students and teachers can see themselves in the learning process

together, working as one to make the lesson and the classroom better.

Cost - Budget ( pricing for PD and/or Access/Infrastructure)

One Swivl camera with 2 tracker devices SW3322-C3 costs approximately $1,000. Compatible

with Apple and Android devices, the base features a rechargeable battery and the software is

free, to cost effective for more advanced features.
