CHAPTER ONE

RESEARCH INTRODUCTION

1.0 INTRODUCTION
As the new curriculum was introduced by the government, it brought about new

features such as sports education in all schools in Zimbabwe both primary and

secondary. The newly reformed curriculum seeks to enable all learners to partake in

gaining practical skills which could assist them in the future either in the field of playing

a sport or coaching. Students are encouraged to become a part with the newly enrolled

subject of sport administration, whereas participating in various sporting activities

offers help in identifying personal talents. Trained and talented athletes can effectively

turn sport into a profession to pursue professionally. Northlea high school has made a

name out of itself by giving out a student who played nationally in sporting industry

such as Shalom Ncube. Northlea high school based in Reigate district Bulawayo has a

magnified sporting program ranging from handball, basketball, netball, cricket, football

and other various sports available at the facility. However, students can have access to

any sport of their choice, but not all students partake in the mentioned sports above due

to various problems. Moreover the researcher will trace Northlea five years back from

[2014 to 2018] on the causes of poor netball performances at school level and also the

infrastructure , training programs, player attitude towards the sport, coaching

experience, methods used for training and motivational strategies to the netball team.

Chapter one will show the background of the problem, the importance of the case study

as well as the researcher’s objectives in carrying out the research.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

The introduction above states and explains the importance of sport with new curriculum
which was introduced in January. Northlea high school examined that netball is one of the
sports with poor performances in competitions. It could be argued that factors such as
administration and fitness are the causes of poor performances. The researcher further studies
the issue from 2014 to 2018 to try and figure out the major causes of the netball teams.

1.2 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

What is the history of netball performance at Northlea high school?

What training strategies dot they use?

What training techniques are used in coaching?

Is the identification of talent revealed in these girls?

1.3 Hypothesis
The researcher’s view of the causes of the problem could be factors due to unexperienced
coaches, as an observation that took place the researcher that it is rare to see the teams in a
hard training session. Most students fail to participate in sports due to poor training
environment, inadequate equipment and less skilled coaches.
1.4 Research objectives

1: To help change the performances of the teams by finding better facilitators

2: To encourage more students to take part in sporting activities

3: Allowance of skilled coaches to assist in the improvement

4: To find solutions to the causes of poor performance

5: To find out why Northlea high school grounds have not been maintained

6: To investigate why there are no skilled teachers in netball compared to other sports.

7: To establish a history of netball at Northlea High School

1.5 IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The research topic is about identifying these difficulties in the learning of skills,
implementation of these skills to benefit a child talented in sport because it boosts self-esteem
out of the student. The study may lead to the improvement and enhancement of strategies of
coaching and training.

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

a. The researcher will depend on the limited resources

b. Lack of cooperation from targeted population who will feel they are classified as
failures
c. Produced questions may not be returned due to a negative attitude toward the sport
d. Interviews from a few individuals may be lies due to wrong method of approach
e. The research material may have some data being lost
f. The individuals may have limited time and it may force the researcher to beg for more
time

1.7 DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study would be carried out at Northlea high school in Bulawayo Reigate district in
Matabeleland region.
The study will be confined to the girls netball activities only

1.8 POPULATION
The population of the study shall consist of 1500 learners at Northlea high school,
approximately 85 permanent teachers and 15 ancillary teachers and it would be
approximately 1600 people.

1.9 POPULATION SAMPLE

The population sample shall be specific to give accurate data
a. The study shall target those learners involved in netball
b. Teachers who are in charge of the sport
c. Teachers who have been here for more than five years and have shown interest in
netball
1.10 DEFINITION OF TECHNICAL TERMS USED IN THE
STUDY

1.11 SUMMARY
Chapter one has been focusing on the introduction of the research problem. It outlined the

Importance of the study, the key elements, limitations, delimitations, and the key population to be

Involved in the study. To help establish the sport by clubs working with the coaches to identify and

develop training models and to trace the netball history and also to find training methods which

could be used to develop young athletes in Northlea high school.
