formerly known as Momentum Data East Philippines, was
established last January 2005 to provide expert knowledge process outsourcing and business process solutions. We’ve been in the business for 14 years now with more than 1200 employees including data encoders, medical coders and call center agents in Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga and Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales. We have several clients that we are providing services. These are mostly encoding and medical coding and few call center services. As I have observed in our production, here exist a problem on distributing workloads on encoding area. Once an encoder is hired he/she will be assigned to one specific project only. Projects have different work volumes as not all clients have the same business size and needs. Due to different project volume, some encoders experience under load and some are overloaded. There are projects that require encoders to render 5-6 hours overtime every day. Some requires their encoders to take undertime because of insufficient work load. This is due to lack of equal distribution of work because an employee focuses on one project only which in fact, employees taking undertime can perhaps back up projects having massive work load. Back up only happens when a certain project is too impossible for the team to handle. And if you will think, if that can be done once then why can’t it be made on a regular basis? This is an up and existing problem in our company. From delivery managers down to team leaders, no one has set an action to address this problem. This causes several employee complaints and increase in attrition rate. I think if managers will apply Management Science, this is solvable after all. Through appropriate techniques, managers can implement fair work distribution to get the most out of labor hours, work force, subject to employee’s training on selected projects. Though additional working hours are rendered for training encoders, this is only for a short period and the result is for the long run. Unfortunately, I cannot think of any problem faced by our company that was solved with the help of Management Science. There are other problems like maintaining supplies and repair materials, inconsistency of salary evaluation (by tenure, experience, etc.) and uneven benefits that have not been given attention. While when it comes to financial aspect, US Corporate is the one deciding so I am not aware if they are using Management Science. I can only understand the local process here in the Philippines. Nevertheless, what I can observe in my company is that if it is presently working, earning, and temporarily solving issues, it is already sufficient. They are not after with long term solutions. As long as they solved problems for a short period of time, managers think it is effective. If managers will have knowledge of Management Science and this will be practiced in a company, it will be a great help for decision making process. Using proper techniques, it can be used as guide to solve problems. These solutions, once proven effective and implemented, can assist companies in running their business effectively and efficiently.
