CUSCO CERAMICS
Cusco, capital city of the Inca Empire is situated in the
mountains of southern Peru and is considered the oldest living
city of the American continent.
Cusco ceramic is the result of the mixture or fusion
of two cultures: the Andean and the European. Two branches
can be distinguished between the ceramic of the city and the
one from the nearby villages: the first one fulfills its use as a
souvenir decorated with Inca culture themes. The second ce-
ramic, on the other hand, is made for popular consumption.
The ceramic made for popular consumption is
manufactured in some traditional villages such as San

The wood used for carving must be light,

the artisans to carve statues of patron saints for the

woods for carving, as the aliso and chachacomo.
Actually, one of the most important centers

GOLD AND SILVER FILIGREE
This practice is of Moorish origin and was brought
to Peru by the Spaniards. Briefly put it consists of pouring
the molten metal on an iron plate with a thin groove on it
until a very fine thread is produced, which is then twisted
into two strands and placed on a press. When it is ready to
be worked on, it is bent with special kind of tweezers and
soldered to create figures and different motifs. The main
production centers of gold and silver filigree are located
in Catacaos (Piura), San Jeronimo de Tuman (Junin) and
Ayacucho. In the northern part of the country, the gold and
silver objects more frequently produced are the dormilo-

riders of the Peruvian Paso horse. This material is also
utilized to weave toys, shoes, hand fans, etc.
Tamshi is an aerial root of great value in the Pe-
ruvian jungle. The natives use this root to construct their
huts by tying the logs together with it. Also, they use it
to weave objects such as sieves, baskets, purses, lamp-
shades, bags and so forth. The hard fiber, such as car-
rizo cane and wild cane, grow all over Peru, and mixed
with soil make quincha, which is a material similar to
adobe, used since pre Hispanic times, to build houses.
Nowadays, all these vegetable fibers allow the
craftsman to make ancestral objects, as well as to invent
new and original products. We must add that these ma-
terials are not only used to make objects for daily appli-
cations, but also to create musical instruments, like the
quena or Andean flute, native of Peru, and also the zam-
poña or pan flute.

JUNGLE TEXTILES
Jungle fabrics textiles are dyed and embroidered
with symbolic designs and mythic jungle figures. For the
inhabitants of the Peruvian Amazon jungle, the colors
posses a spirit, or yushi, hence in the Shipibo language
the colored cotton is called yushi warsman, while the
white cotton is called warsman.
The jungle inhabitants manufacture their
clothing using cotton and also tocuyo and cañam-
azo fabril. Male clothing is called tari and the skirt the
women wear is called chitoontee. Other materials of
the jungle are the aerial root known as tamshi. This
fiber is used to manufacture multiple objects such as
baskets, brooms and also it is used to join the trunks in
