About KTM
KTM AG (the former KTM Sportmotorcycle AG) is an Austrian motorcycle and sports
car manufacturer owned by KTM Industries AG and Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto.
It was formed in 1992 but traces its foundation to as early as 1934. Today, KTM AG is
the parent company of the KTM Group.

KTM is known for its off-road motorcycles (enduro, motocross and supermoto).
Since the late 1990s, it has expanded into street motorcycle production and devel-
oping sports cars – namely the X-Bow. In 2015, KTM sold almost as many street as
off-road bikes. Production of the KTM X-Bow started in 2007.

Since 2012, KTM has been the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe for four
consecutive years. Globally, the company is among the leading off-road motorcycle
manufacturers. In 2016, KTM sold 203,423 motor vehicles worldwide.

1
HISTORY
KTM was founded in 1934 by Hans Trunkenpolz and was initially known as Kraftfahrzeuge
Trunkenpolz. Because the company was actually a metalworking shop and sales were pretty
low, the owners decided to start manufacturing motorcycles. Two years later, in 1953, an
Austrian businessman named Ernst Kronreif bought a large share of the company which was
the renamed to Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen (KTM).

In the first year of existence, they had only 20 employees and they were producing approxi-
mately three bikes per day, including the 98cc R100, a project which began in 1951. KTM
first participated in motorsports events in 1953 in the 5th Gaisberg competition in which it
won the first three places.

One year later, KTM celebrated the delivery of their 1000th motorcycle and, during the
same year, it won the Austrian 125 national championship. Two years later, in 1956, KTM
participated in the International Six Days race for the first time and Egon Dornauer won the
gold.

In 1959, the KTM engineer Ludwig Apfelbeck developed a new racing motorcycle which
Erwin Lechner uses to win multiple offroad competitions. Although the things were going
pretty good for the company, KTM starts manufacturing bicycles in 1964.

Two years later, KTM started the production of the crosscountry Penton Six Days, a motor-
cycle which was meant to be exported to the USA. The same year marks the winning of the
Austrian national championship by Manfred Klerr using the new 250cc Motorcross bike.

More important, in 1973, KTM starts the serial production of the 250 Motorcross and En-
duro while the same year, the Austrian team records the first World Championship points
and the first Grand Prix wins. Until 1974, KTM had a range of no less than 42 models, but
even so, the company starts the production of KTM Hobby III in the same year.

KTM started the 80s with an important hit as they introduced the first watercooled 125cc
Motorcross bikes in 1981 while one year later they implemented the new Pro Lever rear
suspension to all their motorcross models.

In 1984, KTM started making radiators and sold them to competitors (Suzuki being one of
the most important names). However, in the same time they were manufacturing motorcycle
parts, the company celebrated their 100,000th KTM engine which came with a displace-
ment of 500cc, with liquid cooling system and could produce more than 50bhp.

Series production of the KTM 4 stroke liquid cooled engine started in 1987 but one year
later, one of the company’s founders, Eric Trunkenpolz dies. Due to bankruptcy, the com-
pany was divided into independent divisions, which either continued making radiators or
building motorcycles and bicycles. In 1992, the new KTM Sportmotorcycle GmbH was offi-
cially founded, having a new management team, a new Hard Enduro and a new motorcycle
design.

640 LC4 ADVENTURE
(1999 - 2000)
KTM 640 LC4 Adventure is very vibey, even for a single.
Vibration runs through your arms, legs and groin and a long ride leaves you
feeling like you’ve got fizzy pop not blood running through your veins. And while
the screen may look impressive it’s largely useless above 130 Km (80 mph).
However, if you can ignore those whopping shortcomings the handling is ex-
tremely good thanks to the sophisticated WP shock and forks, with excellent
braking courtesy of two 300 mm discs up front.

This KTM 640 has a liquid-cooled, SOHC, single cylinder. This engine is ex-
treme reliable and powerful for this class. Providing it’s not still sitting on the
dreadful Pirelli MT60 tyres it comes with the KTM 640 LC4 Supermoto KTM handles

350 SX-F
2016 - 2017
The main target for the KTM engineers when developing the SX models was a
massive weight reduction compared to the previous generation.
The result: the current SX-F models are the slimmest, lightest bikes in the com-
petition, even though the 4-strokes are equipped with an electric starter as a
standard feature, while the competition still needs to be kick started.

1994 - 1999
The Duke was KTM’s first street bike, and first supermoto, having previously
made only off-road and racing motorcycles.
The 690 Duke is the latest generation in KTM’s line of midrange single-cylin-
der engine supermoto or naked motorcycles that began with the 1994 609 cc
(37.2 cu in) displacement. The thumping carb-fed SOHC single is all about de-
livering maximum power at minimum revs, with peak torque at just 5000rpm.
This means there’s instant shove and a healthy mid-range, which combined
with a dry weight of 152kg means easy wheelies.

DUKE II
1999 - 2006
The detailed work on the engine periphery makes itself felt on the paper with
five multi-horsepower and in practice with an improved world around tuning.
The 55 horse stables of the Duke II galloped much more cultivated than the 50
horses of the Duke. With the Duke II comes further street refinement and new
wrappings that keep step with the current styling of KTM’s LC4 off-road mod-
els. Sharper-edged lines have replaced the rounded body contours of its prede-
cessor, giving the Duke II a more compact and aggressive appearance.

DUKE II LIMITED
2006 - 2007
The classic fun bike.
Razor-sharp appearance, original design, light, aluminium cast wheels and even
better performance, thanks to a new intake tract. The Duke is solidly reliable;
well screwed together and well finished. There’s no single cylinder motor that’s
as durable as a four, though, and anything with more than 40.233.60 Km
(25,000 miles) on the clock may well be an expensive rebuild waiting to hap-
pen.

DUKE III 690
2008 - 2011
The KTM 690 Duke’s new LC4 single cylinder engine is the most impressive
part of the new Duke.
It’s hard to believe it’s a single, so much better than the lumpy single cylinder
engines of old. The styling is very aggressive, it’s laden in quality parts like WP
suspension and Brembo brakes, and on the right road, hairpin after hairpin its
almost untouchable, shame we do not have those kinds of roads in the UK.

2016 - PRESENT
Based on the 1,301 cc engine of the 1290 Super Duke R, aka “The Beast”,
the 1290 Super Duke GT is clearly the Alpha within its segment.
It packs a powerful punch for fully loaded tours, has massive torque from the
bottom up and lacks the need for extensive gear shifts. It’s equally happy cruis-
ing around town as it is giving superbikes a run for their money when the chips
are down. The engineers took the cylinders from the 1290 Super Duke R and
adapted them to a newly developed cylinder head and crankshaft to give the
1290 Super Duke GT a powerplant that perfectly fits its sovereign appearance.
Or would you interpret 173 hp and 144 Nm of torque.

390 DUKE
2016 - PRESENT
Completely new, the KTM 390 Duke’s state-of-the-art, single-cylinder engine
once again underlines KTM’s development strength.
It’s clear that the latest materials and production technologies not only deliver
the bike’s bountiful torque and overwhelming acceleration at all engine speeds,
but also good manners in everyday use and outstanding fuel economy. With
375 cc, the single-cylinder engine only weighs 36 kg, thanks to the compact
design - typical of KTM - with transmission shafts arranged one above anoth-
er. Moreover, it delivers a punchy 44 hp with such technical refinements as
NaCaSil cylinder coating and forced oil lubrication with performance-boosting
casing evacuation (the suction pump not only transfers oil, but also pressure
from the crankcase, thereby reducing the running resistance of the crank drive).

690 DUKE R
2016 - PRESENT
Three words: attack, control, effortless.
Significantly more aggressive than the 690 Duke, the new 690 Duke R shifts
its rider precisely into the position required for hitting the apex time and time
again. Bent slightly forwards, with a solid foothold on the sportily positioned
foot pegs, great feel and plenty of freedom of movement on the completely
reworked seat. To top it all off, the engaging handlebar (840 mm wide, 38 mm
rise) offers telepathic levels of control. Who knew Supermoto racing could be so
relaxed? Wicked maneuvers made so easy? And still it delivers a good overview
and excellent day-to-day comfort. Those who prefer racing alone can mount a
rear cover over the pillion seat cushion and dismantle the passenger foot pegs.
The only other thing you’ll have to bring to the track is your game face.

faithful to its ancestor’s ways, but adds future-proof refinements: impressive
smoothness, sophisticated electronics, improved ergonomics and a good old
power boost over last year’s model. This firmly cements the world’s strongest

250 EXC-F
2017 - PRESENT
The new 250 EXC-F engine has been redesigned in order to make the new power-
plant more compact and lighter, while delivering class-leading torque and power
figures over the entire rev range.
The new architecture with an optimized shaft configuration makes the engine
20mm shorter, which contributes to the bike’s mass centralization and effortless
rideability. Another major benefit of the new design is the weight reduction by
1.5kg, down to hardly 27.6kg. And that’s including the comfort of an electric starter.
The power curve now reaches for the sky over the entire length of the rev range,
begging for another gear at 12,800rpm. This makes the new 250 EXC-F brilliantly
suited to both amateur riders as to pros at the peak of their ability. And it’s Euro IV
