Hello and welcome to Brazilian English Podcast, I´m your host and teacher Derek Noble
and in this podcast we talk about Brazilian culture and entertainment to help Brazilian
students of English reach fluency in English and also to spread our values and beliefs
worldwide. Every episode is full of rich vocabulary for all levels of English and also full
of content related to a universe that, as we know, is enormous and interesting: I´m
talking about Brazilian culture.
(Intro)
Yo, guys, what´s up? How are you today? I hope you guys are having a great day.
Today´s podcast is related to behaviour. And the word behaviour is related to your
actions and attitudes, right? The way you act in society and the way you also act when
you are by yourself. We´re gonna talk about our manners and customs when it comes to
talking and interacting with people.
As you know, we live in a tropical country where most of its parts are warm and sunny.
This may influence the way we interact with other people, of course. Brazilians,
therefore, are welcoming and gregarious. We tend to accept foreigners easily even with
a certain air of novelty and curiosity. This is usually seen as a positive trait of our
culture. I totally agree with that. Because of that, we will embrace people as our own,
and I also mean literally. Brazilians kiss and hug a lot. When meeting someone new in
an informal situation, we will kiss once on each cheek or hug the person and kiss them
2
once on a single cheek. I don´t know, this varies from state to state. Here in the south,
we will also kiss on the cheeks three times and we will say it´s for good luck in finding
someone to marry. Go figure. I really mean it. Hehehe.
What´s more, when we don´t know people in a certain social event, we make small talk
about popular topics such as football, food and drinks, and personal preferences like
music, movies and series, which will include even the popular and worldwide famous
Brazilian soap opera or telenovela. If you are foreigner coming to Brazil, avoid talking
about politics, violence and personal problems. We deal with them every day, it´s
enough.
As for conversation, the rythm of our talks is slightly different compared to other
countries. Conversations in Brazil are full of interruptions and loud interjections. These
interruptions are rarely seen as rude. In fact, not engaging in an excited chat could
convey boredom and indifference to the topic. Brazilians will welcome any excuse to
have a conversation. Whether it´s in a dinner party with family and friends or while
waiting in the bank line, or the bus stop we´ll chinwag about anything in order to kill
time and interact. Specially old people, I guess.
Well, guys, that is it for this podcast. I hope you have enjoyed it.
What other personality traits do Brazilians have? Have I described us correctly? Have I
missed something?
