Introduction to Packet Tracer 1.

1
Curriculum Scope and Sequence
Last updated January 2019

Introduction
Packet Tracer is an exciting network design, simulation and modelling tool that allows users to develop their skill
set in networking, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things (IoT). It allows users to model complex systems without
the need for dedicated equipment. It is used across numerous Cisco Network Academy courses to help develop
and assess the skill set necessary for successful completion of the course.

Target Audience
The Introduction to Packet Tracer curriculum is designed for any audience, including users who are part of the
Cisco Networking Academy®. It is also designed for other interested users who are seeking to acquire the
foundational skills and knowledge required across the emerging digitization technologies using a hands-on,
problem-solving approach.
Common uses of Packet Tracer include:
 Preparing for a certification exam.
 Practicing network design, configuration, and troubleshooting that has been learned in networking
courses.
 Sharpening skills for a job interview.
 Examining the impact of adding new technologies into existing network designs without using real
equipment.
 Building skills for jobs in the Internet of Things.

Curriculum Overview
The Introduction to Packet Tracer (I2PT) course highlights the basic features of the simulation tool for new users
and how to use the package to include, connect, and program IoT devices into a network. A series of short and
lively videos will guide users through the steps to create new networks, modify existing networks, and verify device
connectivity within the network. Short labs that follow the videos in each section are an integral component to the
learning process.

Courses and Recommended Curriculum Paths

The Introduction to Packet Tracer course is intended as a five to eight hour, self-paced course. This course is
intended to provide the knowledge required to use Packet Tracer as a tool for learning about networking and the
IoT.

Software Requirements
Cisco Packet Tracer 7.x is an innovative network simulation and visualization tool. This free software allows users
to practice and enhance their network configuration and troubleshooting skills via a desktop computer or an
Android or iOS based mobile device. Packet Tracer is available for both the Linux and Windows desktop
environments. Packet Tracer requires the latest version of Java to be installed on the host device.
