WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL
This Week’s Saint is St. Gertrude of Nivelles (Belgium)
Virgin, and Abbess of the Benedictine monastery of Nivelles, Belgium. She was born in 626 in Landen, Belgium, and died 17
March, 659 in Nivelles, Belgium.
St. Gertrude was born into a saintly family; both of her parents are acclaimed as blessed, and her sister is Saint Begga. Her pious
family no doubt helped to influence her early love of God, and she felt the call of a religious vocation from an early age. Her fam-
ily's wealth and station would have afforded her a noble marriage, but Gertrude's heart was set on God alone.

When her father Pepin died in 639, her holy mother Itta determined to use some of her lands and funds to buid a double monastery
at Nivelle. Both she and her daughter entered, Her mother served as abbess until she judged her daughter sufficiently mature to as-
sume this office, which she did at about age twenty in 646. She served in this role quite well with her mother's advice and assistance
for about ten years. During her years as abbess she was known widely for both her holiness and her hospitality to travelers and pil-
grims. She made a gift of land to enable the construction of the monastery of Fosses and aided other monks in evangelization efforts.

Most of all, Gertrude longed for God, and was known for her time spent in prayer, her visionary experiences (Once, while she was as prayer before the tabernacle,
a globe of fire appeared upon her head which was witnessed by all the sisters of the abbey.), her knowledge of sacred scripture and for the extreme austerities
which she practiced. These mortifications weakened her health to the extent that she decided to step down as abbess in 656, at the age of 30. She spent the last
three years of her life in study and prayer.

St. Gertrude seems to have known of her impending death, as she inquired of a holy monk which exact hour it would be. She was told that she would die peace-
fully and enter into heavenly glory at the exact time that Mass was being offered that day. And so it was. She was almost immediately venerated as a saint.
“St. Gertrude is patroness of cats, and those who Because of her great renown for hospitality, travelers used to drink a "St. Gertrude's Cup" before
love them, gardeners, and the recently deceased.” setting out on a journey, and she is often depicted with a pilgrim's staff. St. Gertrude is also asso-
ciated with the newly deceased; the low country legend has it that souls spend their first night in
the afterlife in her care. In art she is often depicted with mice running up her staff, which may symbolize souls; the exact association has been lost. Because of this
depiction, she is regarded as a patron saint of cats as well.

She is patron of travellers, and is invoked against fever, rats, and mice, paticularly field-mice. There is a legend that one day she sent some of her
subjects to a distant country, promising that no misfortune would befall them on the journey. When they were on the ocean, a large sea-monster
threatened to capsize their ship, but disappeared upon the invocation of St. Gertrude. In memory of this occurence travellers during the Middle
ages drank the so-called "Sinte Geerts Minne" or "Gertrudenminte" before setting out on their journey. St. Gertrude is generally represented as an
abbess, with rats and mice at her feet or running up her cloak or pastoral staff. Retrieved from http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/06533C.HTM

St. Michael’s Living Rosary

This is our 5th year doing the Living Rosary and it gets better every year! This year we had our youth band playing and singing before
and after the Rosary– they were awesome! Our younger students came prepared and made a beautiful Living Rosary outside in beautiful,
perhaps slightly windy conditions. There were also saints dressed up among the children as we talked about saints during the closing of
class. A big thank you to the High School Class, Ginger Cody and Gail Fitzpatrick for a lovely Living Rosary! Job well done!

Surrendering to God Results Brings Victory in the Spiritual Battle

Christianity has many paradoxes, or seemingly illogical aspects, that challenge the intellect and selfishness of human-
ity. One essential principle is that of surrender. It is not a word used in the Bible, but is still a requirement for success-
ful Christian living.

The goal of every Christian should be to become Christ-like, and to live life with the courage, compassion,

power and principles of Jesus. His greatest example was that He surrendered Himself completely to the will
of the Father by offering His life as a sacrifice for mankind. Every Christian benefits from the work accom-
plished by Jesus. Now it is the Christian's turn to offer a sacrifice of self.

To acknowledge Jesus as Lord is to surrender to Him. The word surrender implies a giving up after resis-
tance to the power of another, and, in this case, includes accepting the superiority of someone else. It is not
accepting defeat, per se, as there is no loss of life or property. To surrender means the end of the fight, and
there is no more argument. It is the solid realization that His way is a better way.
