This can be done in variety of ways, such as “quick quizzes, post-it-notes, mini-whiteboards, KWL, traffic lights ect.
b. Engage
In this stage you want to engage interest and curiosity, raise the “big questions” and provide the “hook” for why the
students want to learn.
c. Explore
During this stage, learners should be given opportunities to work together, independent of you, their teacher to explore.
As a teacher, you should set up the task, but then become the facilitator, helping students by asking questions and
observing.
d. Explain
During this stage, the teacher should use what the students had discovered in the explore stage for them to build a
concept. Students can explain concepts and provide definitions of their own, ask for clarification before the teacher
provide the new labels, definitions and theory.
e. Elaborate
This stage is the key in assessing student’s progress, knowledge and understanding. Student may work independently
during this stage to demonstrate learning. This is where the students formulate and apply their learning.
f. Extend
In this stage, you are encouraging the students to apply or extend the concepts and skills in new situations. Students make
connections not just in the subject or ideas studied but also beyond it. They are able to apply ideas/generalize and transfer
principles.
