CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Facebook and Twitter are one of the most known

programs in the society. Entertainment , and current

information are one of the information that the social

media commonly provides. Despite the information pool that

we can find in the web, not all of this information is

reliable and gives a positive effects to the society.

Some of the Grade 11-Programing students, experienced

some difficulties in performing well, because of various

factors such as high interactions towards social media

account which is Facebook and Twitter that can cause a

mental disorder such as addiction, cyber bullying, sleep

deprivation, and depression due to insensitive comments or

things that badly affects other social media users.

However, the good side is that you can communicate with

your teachers or classmates using group chats or personal

messages in Facebook or Twitter which makes the discussion

of extracurricular activity/project, passing an assignment,

and update on what deflation of school in your area more

faster. Camarines Sur National High School also known as

CSNHS is one of the biggest school in Naga City, almost

everywhere in the school you can see students who look at


their phone while walking or even at their classrooms just

to use the so called social media, specifically Facebook

and Twitter. Grade 11 - Programming students here are also

using the famous programs.

Based on Mashable (2011),the positive impact on

student's sense themselves in the community. Students who

use social media will twice as likely as others students to

feel well liked by their peers and to participate in

extracurricular activities. However, the negative effects

abound, students who use Facebook/Twitter rather than

reading books simultaneously will likely found themselves

receiving lower grades than those of their more focused

peers.

With above mentioned scenario and situations, it is

the main objectivity of the research to determine other

effects of Facebook and Twitter towards the academic

performances of the students of Grade 11-Programming.

Statement of the Problem

This study solely focuses on the effects of Facebook

and Twitter towards 11-Prog-1 students academic

performances, and also their perception about it.


1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Twitter

and Facebook towards the students of 11-PROG-1?

2. How does Facebook and Twitter affects the academic

performances of 11-PROG-1 students?

3. How do Facebook and Twitter negatively affects the

students leading them to fail in their academic

performances?

Significance of the Study

This study will greatly guide or help those

future generations specifically on how to avoid the

negative effects but solely gain the positive effects

of social media for their performance. The

successfulness of this research will also help the

future researchers or students, schools and the

community itself that will also research on this kind

of topic for them to have a much better insights or

understandings regarding this topic.

Conceptual Framework

Addiction and Cyber bullying are some of the effects of

Facebook and Twitter into students. We will conduct this

research with the goal in mind to help those victims who

are suffering or affected by the effects we stated.

Through, Survey, Interview, and Observation on some

victims, we might be able to find a way to stop and prevent

those people who might be a future victim of the problem.

While conducting this research we will conduct some

seminars to those victims and teach them a way to

comprehend the problems and at the same time we will gather

some information from them by interviews, survey and other

instruments that can be used to gather information from

them. Even though we will conduct this research it is

surely inevitable at first to prevent these victims in the

present to fall in their Academic Performance and lose some

self-esteem.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This research will solely focus on the

effects of Facebook and Twitter towards the Academic

Performance of 11- PROG- 1 students of CSNHS and also on

how to lessen the students who gets addicted on Facebook

and Twitter, that will surely negatively affect their


academic performance. This research will also be conducted

from month of October until December.

Definition of Terms

Addiction – Getting addicted to social media affecting

lifestyle and studies resulting in failure.

Cyber Bully – Because of Cyber Bully students get depressed

affecting their studies.

Failing Students – Students that can’t attain passing

grades because of Facebook and Twitter.

Interview – Asking victims personally when they did get

addicted to Facebook and Twitter.

Low Self Esteem – Students that does not give importance to

themselves due to Cyber Bullying.

Observation – Observing their behavior towards other

people.

Survey – In order to get the number of students that failed

because of Facebook and Twitter.
