Most birds make nests.
Some bird nests are shaped
like a cup or a ball.
Many other animals make
nests, too.
They all make nests to
keep their babies safe.

Some nests are big,
and some nests are small.
A hummingbird makes
the smallest nest of all.
You could hold it in one hand.

Eagles make the biggest
nests of all.
An eagle’s nest can weigh
as much as a car!

Some nests hang from
high branches.
Some nests sit on the ground.
Adelie penguins use rocks to make
their nests on the ground.
Sometimes they steal rocks
from other penguins!

Swiflets are birds that make their
nests in caves.
Some people use parts of these nests
in a Chinese soup called Bird’s
Nest Soup!

An alligator also makes a nest
on the ground.
It builds the nest out of grass
and mud.
Sometimes an alligator lays
70 eggs in the nest!

Animals make nests from all kinds
of things.
Some birds make nests by winding
and weaving grass with their beaks.
In the spring, insects called queen
paper wasps come out of hollow logs
or deep holes.
They make nests that look like
soft paper.

Some fish make nests
out of bubbles.
They make their nests in a pond
and put their eggs inside bubbles.
Then the eggs don’t break.

You can find nests in many places,
in lots of shapes and sizes.
Nests are beautiful and surprising.
