Dominican Republic vs Jamaica

Both countries have an indigenous influence in their gastronomy, which explains some of the
similarities between their dishes.

In Jamaica the chili pepper called “scotch bonnet” is put in almost every food, Dominicans
don’t tend to use it very much.

In both countries the main meat is chicken.

Empanadas are more common in Jamaica than in D.R. The most common one is “patty”, filled
with meat or fish.

On breakfast Jamaicans eat “ackee”, the Jamaican national fruit, fish and boiled green
bananas, while Dominicans eat mangu, eggs or salami.

Both countries have 3 meals everyday

The main dish in both countries is rice and beans, although Jamaicans prefer red beans while
Dominicans are ok with any kind of beans. Also, instead of the traditional chicken they eat a
spicy chicken called “jerk chicken”

In Jamaica there is a soup called “mannish water” that is made of goat meat. In Dominican
Republic we have “sancocho”, a soup made of meat, vegetables and other condiments.

Ron is one of the main alcoholic drinks in both countries, in Dominican Republic we have
“Brugal” and in Jamaica the have “Appleton”.

Both countries offer a wide variety of seafood in their restaurants.

Both Dominicans and Jamaicans prefer pork meat on Christmas instead of turkey.
