Locating a parking spot during peak hours in most populated areas like colleges, universities, exhibitions, shopping
malls, or convention centers is difficult for the drivers. The difficulty rises from not knowing where the available
spots may be at that required time. Smart parking is a solution to institutions and metropolitan cities to reduce
congestion, cut vehicle emission totals and save persons’ time by helping them in finding a spot to park. Our
College is not much different, many of us find it difficult to locate a parking spot.Smart Parking is a parking system,
usually a new one that is equipped with special and intelligent structured devices (things) to detect the available
parking slots at any parking area. This is an application based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Systems that in
Real-Time environment have sensors and devices embedded into parking spaces, transmitting data on the
occupancy status; and the vehicle drivers can search for parking availability using lcd screen in entrance of the
parking lot. Hence the driver would know where there is an available spot to park his vehicle in before hand,
reducing the energy consumption and air pollution. INTRODUCTION Seeking a vacant parking space during peak
hours in areas like Colleges, Hospitals, Hotels & Shopping Centers, Airports, Universities, and Exhibitions &
Convention Center has always been frustrating for many drivers. Surveys say that traffic generated by cars
searching for vacancies in Parking Spaces is up to 40% of the total traffic. A similar scenario exists in our college
too.Due to the increasing number of vehicles caused by rapid population growth in urban areas, the demand on
parking infrastructure for the general public has increased significantly. As further points out, finding a free parking
space in urban cities especially during peak hours is more or less impossible, in many cases. Looking for a vacant
parking lot in a busy city like Bengaluru, at a peak hour is a nightmare to drivers. They have to drive around looking
for a free parking spot, something that is believed to increase traffic congestion .The cycling around not only
frustrates drivers but also increases the average consumption of gas and hence the air pollution, looking for a free
spot in a busy city has the likelihood of causing an accident . Another challenge is associated with paying for the
parking duration, most of the time, the machines from which to get the payment ticket are located some distance
from the car. The ticket machines too sometimes, present some complications since they are not the same; some
machines take only coins, or coins plus credit/debit cards or only credit/debit cards. The situation looks like drivers
have to prepare for the possibility of any of the above type of ticket machines before going to one. Smart parking is
a vehicle parking system that aid drivers to identify empty parking lots and solve all the above problems. The smart
parking system also includes the means of calculating and paying for the time spent in the parking lot hassle-free.
The idea behind such arrangement is that, the system allocates a parking space to the user and automates the
payment for the parked time. In addition to establishing the location of vacant parking space and payment for the
parking, the system could also include the management of parking tickets. Currently, the parking tickets are hard
copies and digitizing them would be a value addition and a further utilization of the system. LITERATURE SURVEY
The authors of [1–3] propose smart parking managers using RFID technology and embedded systems with the
objective of helping a user check the availability of a parking space over the cloud. The authors of [4,5] propose a
system that uses image detection along with other technologies. In [6–8], a mono-parking wireless sensor network
is described where wireless sensors are deployed in a car parking lot, with each parking spot equipped with one
sensor node. The authors of papers[9,10] propose a multi-parking system to extend the services to a scaler larger
than a single car parking lot; for instance, outdoor car parking management, e.g., in streets, guiding the user
towards an appropriate car parking lot within a city. This may require a collaboration and understanding between
multiple car parking managers. In [11], the authors propose KATHODIGOS, which is a smart parking system that use
wireless technologies and wireless applications to acquire information about the status of roadside parking spaces
so that it can be used efficiently. The obtained information is transmitted to a central information system through
gateways using WiFi-Module. The solution in [12] puts forth a framework of parking management, called iParking,
that monitors incoming/outgoing vehicles using a sensor network. iParking calculates the number of available
parking spaces and sends the information to the parking lot's customers. In [13], the authors describe a street
parking system based on the wireless sensor networks. The system can monitor the state of every parking space by
deploying a magnetic sensor node on the parking space. A vehicle detection algorithm is proposed and designed to
accurately detect a parking car, and adaptive sampling is used to reduce the energy consumption. Most of the
solutions proposed so far considers the use of either WSN or RFID and focus on the engineering of the traffic,
discounting the engineering of the network through an efficient placement of sensors in the parking lot and
designing communication between them.
