Means of Minimising Harm (Accidents)
 Basic Manual handling training will be provided to all staff.
 Avoid manual handling when possible.
 Ensure that you are able to see over the load you are carrying.
 Use mechanical tools where possible to avoid the risk. Make sure the load is secured properly.
 Ensure that manual handling operations are carried out in the correct manner.
 Do not lift or handle anything of excessive weight. Use a two man lift for large, heavy or
unusual loads as required.
 Assistance should be requested where heavy items need to be moved.
 Ensure people are physically fit enough to carry out the specified tasks.
 When lifting, ensure that you have a good balanced stance, get a good hand grip on the load
and use your legs to lift.
 Where mechanical devices are provided to assist in moving items, they must be used.

RISK ASSESSMENT FOR: - R/A – 6. Manual Handling

 Check the weight of an item before lifting it. Most products show the weight of the item on the
packaging.
Employees are to be supplied with the appropriate clothing which does not interfere with their
manual handling tasks including the use of mechanical aids.

PPE Required  Safety shoes / boots & high vis vests and gloves if applicable.

General Recommendations  All staff are to be provided with manual handling training prior to commencing on the contract.
This training is specific to the job role.


Responsibility for Control  Sierra management for overall work procedures and work practices.
 Responsibility of all employees and contractors.
