Introduction

Background of the Study

Music plays a vital role in every Filipino's life. Some would even say that life is
meaningless without it. For the longest time now, singing and listening to a different
genre of music has been the most commonly Filipino leisure. Due to the rise of
globalization and social media, it is easy and convenient for the Filipinos, especially for
the teenagers to listen to the music that came from other countries that contain different
languages. As a result, the taste of music has been improved, changed and made more
exciting in the eyes of Filipinos (Agbayani, Borillio and Colmo, 2015).

Throughout time, there are some Filipinos who are fond of listening different
genre of music since they are easily captured to the things around them. Hence, the most
influential music of today, which is Korean Pop Music or known as K-pop music
captures the attention of many Filipino teenagers. What is K-pop music? According to
Belonio (2017), K-pop music is the abbreviation of Korean pop music which is a genre
consisting of, hip hop, pop, electronic R&B and rock music originating in South Korea. It
is a mixture of trendy music from the West and high-energy from Japanese pop or known
as J-pop music, which allure listeners with repeated hooks and sometimes English. It is
also a fusion with both singing and rap that emphasizes strong performances and visuals.
Moreover, K-pop music is the commodification of upbeat songs, synchronized dance
moves and aesthetic performed by the hardworking and good-looking young Korean that
is packed with digital technology (Robillos, Gerez, and Ronda, 2015). K-pop music
captivates the youth all around the world, regardless of linguistic differences. K-Pop is
still an ever-adapting media movement that has already proven its worth in bridging
borders across the globe (Yang, 2012). In addition, K-pop music is also well known for
its dance performance with less focus on the lyrics and content (Flores, 2012).
In the Philippines, the rising popularity and sensation of K-pop music can be
described as unique (Robillos, 2015). As stated by Belonio (2017), K-pop music
captivated the Filipinos because it has a distinct character of its own even though it
contains pop music influences from the West. He also added that K-pop music is also
often presented and performed with catchy music and dynamic choreography and not to
mention the repetitive appeal that makes it easier for Filipinos to remember and follow.
Moreover, K-pop music was introduced through Korean telenovela or known as K-drama
shown on the local Philippine television. As time goes by, it became a new global trend
in the Philippines and created a fandom especially among the Filipino teenage fans. K-
pop music also entered MYX music channel charts and stayed for weeks. Music
companies distributed K-pop music albums in the Philippines, and most of these albums
were one of the best sellers in music stores. It is evident that K-pop music is taking the
Philippines by storm. Left and right, there’s always K-pop music-related merchandise
and hearing their songs in schools, malls and even in recreational places (Flores, 2012).
Hence, K-Pop music has made a significant impact and influence in the Philippines and
across the globe.

K-pop music as perceived by the grade 12 HUMSS students of College of the Holy Spirit
Manila. By doing so, the researcher will have insights as to how the K-pop music attracts
